PSXHosting Ltd. Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 Hello, I was trying to allow .exe to be uploaded but I get "The filetype you tried to upload is not in the list of approved file types" so I tried adding the mime-type for it.exeapplication/octet-streamThen it says: You must enter at least an extension and mime-type before continuing.Any trick on howto do this? Anyone have a mime-type list I can use?Btw, the "Unsure what the correct mime-type is?. Try looking here" link doesnt seem to work. Thanks!
Stuart Elliott Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 EWWWWWW.. Allowing EXE files are viruses waiting to happen.
Guest Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 You assume that they're going to allow anyone to submit, without approval... They could be using the download manager to distribute software, in which case they'd need to support exe files. ;)
ellawella Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Allowing .exe as an upload extension on IPB is like allowing your three year old daughter to play with a Samurai sword.
Guest Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 I'm assuming that IP.Downloads has it's own list of allowed extensions. So you shouldn't need to enable exe uploads for IP.Board at all. There are plenty of reasons why a board would need to allow exe uploads to their downloads system, and assuming the admin is actually sensible about it, there's no risk involved either.
Strange_Will Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 You should pack your EXEs into Zip files anyway ;)

Guest Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 You should pack your EXEs into Zip files anyway ;)Why? I fail to see any good reason why you'd want, or need to.You need to remember that a lot of your average-joe users aren't even going to know what a zip file is, never mind how to open it.
Strange_Will Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Why? I fail to see any good reason why you'd want, or need to.You need to remember that a lot of your average-joe users aren't even going to know what a zip file is, never mind how to open it.Back in the days of dialup, it was common courtesy to zip them for compression purposes. Plus exe's should come with read mes (what the hell is this exe for?).It adds more security, less bandwidth usage, and lets people know what this file actually does (or guessing). It's nice because usually if they redistribute it, they'll probably redistribute the zip, keeping all instructions, readmes, and credit in tact. :P
PSXHosting Ltd. Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 I fixed it by exporting the mime-type list and manually edit the .xml. However, there must be a bug in the software since it's not allowing me to add it thru the admin panel? :)
shakur1 Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 allowing exe will not harm your server even if it contains a virus, if your company has the basic protecting features. And why would you want to upload exe when you could compress the file in to a zip, for a smaller , faster, and secure from he uploader and downloaders side
bfarber Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 exe's are generally compressed - and 9/10 times zipping them does not help much (maybe a compression gain of .01% which is nothing notable). Were you by chance using IE to try to add the mime-type? I received a bug report yesterday about the mime-type adding in IE (only) which I fixed in my development copy. You can add mime-types fine in FF, but IE wasn't working so well. This will be fixed in the next release of IDM, but I can apply a patch now if you submit a ticket. There's no real harm in allowing exe files...generally.
PSXHosting Ltd. Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Tried it in Opera 9.02 also, same results there. :)
bfarber Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Probably the same issue. If it works in Firefox, then it is indeed the same problem, and you can rest assured it will be fixed with 1.1.1 when it's available :) Again, I can patch your board for you now if you submit a ticket.
