After running forums for 15 years, I don't think I have used a software where its this difficult to get an overview of who is in a group.

You can use the search to get all members from a group in the frontend, and you can either use the member list filter or just click on the number of members on the groups list in the ACP to get the list of all members from a group. 

Thats the problem. You have to click the number itself instead of either the table otherwise it sends you directly to the config page. I suggest making a UX change there.
