Since updating to the newest version, my users are no longer able to change the sort order of the files in the parent category. For example... "?sortby=file_name&sortdirection=asc" no longer seems to have an effect while viewing the parent category.

Parent? Can you elaborate? This forces the sorting in empty categories; categories with files are not touched.
