Email Settings - Not Getting Emails + G Suite

I have Google G Suite for business, with my own domain. I've spent several hours troubleshooting the email settings.

PHP - I send a test email, I get a green "check your email" but nothing shows up. 

Has anyone successfully made their G suite email work through the SMTP method and could walk through the steps they did / make sure of on the G Suite side and then on the Email settings side?

SMTP - I've tried all the suggestions here in this topic

But I can't seem to get anything to go through. Each update I try, I get a red error message. The error message varies and I could go through the steps again.

Resolved this - used PHP as the setting and on our DNS for our domain, added a TXT record:

v=spf1 ip4:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX include:_spf.google.com ~all

where the XX is the IP address of our server. Saved that and waited a half hour - afterwards, bulk mail was usable.
