[commerce] checkbox set values in invoices/notifications

I was asked to add a bunch of checkboxes to a commerce package and it looked easy. However the invoices and notifications when purchased just list a numerical value, presumably corresponding to the list order, instead of the name of the checkbox item. 

Is there any way to get a human-readable value out of a store custom field checkbox set?
