I have just bought i.p board2.3 a standard liscence...$149.99

The support ticket people have said, they will happily install the board for me.

I'm having trouble with giving them back this info?

FTP address

FTP username

FTP password

Desired Install folder (i.e.

http://yourdomain.com/forums)

Desired Admin username

Desired Admin password

MySQL Host (this is usually local host)

MySQL username

MySQL password

MySQL database name

Comments/special instructions you may have:

The FTP is something your webhost would have sent you when you signed up for their hosting service. They should also be able to send this to you now if you've had it a while.

Now from that i'm not quite sure what i've bought? Have i bought an upgrade, because all i want is an ip forum? We are curently on invisionfree.

Sorry if i'm sounding stupid about it, but i'm really confused

Please help :(

Before you can use IPB, you need to have a hosting account with someone. Whether it be a free hosting account or a paid one, otherwise you have nowhere to upload all the files that will make IPB workable. It also beneficial if you have a domain name that you can link the hosting account to, so that when someone types in your web address of something like www.newsite.com they will be directed to your site which has IPB on it. Otherwise your purchase is worthless to you.

I agree. IPS is a great solution for many, many, customers.

They do, indeed, provide a good and low-cost solution for the person who simply wants to administer and run their forum software, without having to worry about the full administration and security of the "web-space" on which the forum resides. IPS does that work for you, and does it very well, for a good low price per month.

Other hosts will provide you the web-space, and an interface (cPanel or Direct Admin) that allows YOU to control it fully with respect to Email Server settings, Email Accounts, FTP Accounts, Database Administration, multiple Domains within it, etc, etc. These are generally referred to as a Shared Plan, or Shared Host. And there are a LOT of them out there. But then YOU have to do all the work with respect to setting up things, and making the site secure against the problems which can occur. A lot of IP Board customers simply DON'T want to have to bother with such things, and instead let IPS do the legwork, as above.

I'm both a user and Webhost reseller myself, so I have accounts with two providers of webhosting. I can't compete with IPS as far price-for-service goes, and don't try to.

IPS forbids advertising of specific hosts, and rightfully so, therefore I can't mention who I use. But I bought my Reseller account from a customer within these forums, and my Shared account from a company whose logo features a large, scaly reptile. I think that's ambiguous enough to not violate the spirit of the restrictions but, if not, a Moderator is free to edit it.

You have to decide for yourself how much work you're willing to do. From what I can see, IPS offers an awful lot of service for the money. FAR more than I could provide for the same price.

If you haven't found yet a hosting company, I would recommend to go with the ipb hosting. They have some very good plans. You can check them out here

I'm pretty confused myself. I had an unencoded board that suddenly became encoded with the upgrade. Apparently I didn't have the standard license. So, I'm wondering if I switch over to their Web hosting if I'm STILL going to have to fork over $149.00 for the board license OR if that comes with the hosting and domain.

The hosting that IPS sell comes only with the encoded version of IP.Board, if you would like the un-encoded version so you can edit files and such, you will need to purchase the License.

This question seams to come up alot. Is setting up an IPB really this hard?

In my opinion, no it isn't very difficult. There is a huge Administration/User manual that you can print out, and I did, but really it isn't all that difficult if you understand the general principles of a Forum. It *IS* detailed, but that's because of its capabilities. I thought phpBB was actually "harder" to set up than IPB.

Opinions vary, of course. ;)

It's not hard if you know what you're doing. Seems all the OP needs is a hosting account and/or domain.

If you need free hosting, PM me. You can get free *.co.cc domain names at http://co.cc, no link or ads required and you get full DNS control.

Create db user, upload contents, run installer, done.
It's not hard to manually install the board. And if you bought a support plan, Invision will gladly do it for you.
