China J Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 Is possible in next release to get the drag and drop for component position like the drag and drop feature for Gallery "Customization" settings? That's some kewl stuff there. The blog should have that too for for "Content Block" settings. Pass the word along please.

However, why in blazes would you want to set component positions? Components don't have any concept of positions anyway, since they effectively become branches of the board not little boxes you can move around. What are you asking for?
Alex Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I would support this idea to some extent, if you run a very busy board which due to such, is very slow, reordering components in the Admin CP can take years, because it reloads the page every single time, if we had something like the Widget reordering from IP.Nexus, and then save the new order when we are done, that would save time and would probably be more useful than what we have at the moment.
Digi Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I say kill the arrows and do like settings positions (numbers). I've always hated the arrows. It wouldn't be so bad if the numbering (internally) was actually done correctly, but having to click 10 times just to jump passed one item is ridiculous.
China J Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 I actually like the Dom Drag and Drop that bfarber did that I mentioned above. Much quicker than whats there now. Numbering would be useful too but taking the time to think about the number positions could end up being more time than simply dragging the component into position. I like the drag idea simply for the fact that some days I find it quicker to re-order components temporary to do cleanup. Good example is I usually position blog or gallery last, but when I need to do some editing of settings or groups I want to quickly bring to top so that on each page refresh I don't have to keep scrolling to the bottom of the dang page lol. On a busy site this is very useful as you could simply drag that group up to the top and when finished put it back where it was originally. Usually on busy boards you will find yourself in the components settings everyday for one group or another. As you can tell, I expanded onto the idea now being under the components tab and just simply dragging the interested component group into desired place. If someone can't understand the use for this then I don't know what to really say. When IPS got rid of the collapsible boxes in the ACP I was truly heart broken because before you could simply minimize all the ones you didn't wish to look at to speed up finding desired component settings for times of heavy board maintenance. The Nexus idea is ok, but it does has it's setbacks one still being not fast as the Dom drag and drop simply because of the steps needed to execute. Example would be you currently have 5 components open for view and you want the one on the bottom to be on top but still keep the other open or even place them in a certain position... Do you see what I mean? You would have to close them all to get your needed group in number one position and then mentally think about where you want the others. The nexus idea would be more clever if they allowed you to drag the tabs into desired position as you can do with FireFox tabs that are open. If that came to light then I believe the Nexus style could be an equal argument. Now another useful place for the Dom feature would be re-ordering forums/subforums. Large sites with a lot of forums/subforums? This would be the perfect tool ever and a wet dream for anyone :P

No one said they didn't understand, I jsut said it was more likely that you'd get a numbering scheme than a drag/drop system. We are talking a difference in maybe an hour's time vs a few days development. :)

I was simply trying to say people in general because someone before you replied why and stated that you can't currently move components even though you can in the admin/manage components tab. I should have quoted to eliminate confusion, sorry. The blog does have it for content block settings. However, why in blazes would you want to set component positions? Dlf Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Would it be make any difference to add to the page a dropdown that lets you see ONLY the active, inactive, or all the components? Select what you want and reload the page? I do think the page/some pages of the ACP could be have some new functions in the future.
