"Ability for a moderator to leave a reason when they edit a post&

Making this a usergroup setting makes the most sense to me.

Is that what Matt asked us not to request? I don't think it is, but I'm not positive.

I don't see why members need to show the reason for editing, its their post they know why they edited it. No other members really need to know why and if they do need to know for whatever reason they can put it in their post.

Moderators however edit someone elses post, which can confuse the user and with a reason for editing it sorts that out.

That's a fair point, but have you ever seen someone add an "EDIT:" line to the end of their post? Sometimes there's actually new content in that line, but sometimes it's just clarifying on what's been fixed. I personally don't think the ability to add an edit reason is necessary - I doubt I would really ever use it - but I have a feeling that a lot of members on a lot of forums are going to scream bloody murder if they see moderators using this and don't have it themselves. If the admin doesn't have a problem with them using it, I don't really see any harm done by giving him the option.

EDIT: Ack, I thought the double post merger was still on. Sorry >_<.

It is. He asked specifically for people NOT to request giving the function to members in any way shape or form. Ah well, there's always modifications if we need it, right?

Mods edit their posts for reasons such as advertising links, profanity, etc. Members edit their posts for reasons like spelling/grammar, to add somethihng, or delete something. No one realy cares why a member edits their own post, but if a mod edits a post, the member should know why so he wont do whatever he did again.

That is something that is really important to know, it can change someone's post completely!

No it isn't. Matt asked us not to ask him to make it so that an admin can decide who can or can not edit the edit-line a moderator posted. So it's not about giving the option to membergroups but about the setting which group can edit the edit-line posted by an other group.

I just don't see the point of making a simple feature complicated.

It's a continual battle making software that has to appeal to everyone. Some people want 5 way options for everything, others complain of bloat. We have to walk a line between those and many more opinions.

The default feature is a very simple addition that allows moderators to leave a permanent non-editable reason why the post was edited. I can't see why you'd ever want to allow your members to do the same and / or remove the reason for your editing of the post.

If you want to edit a member's post and you don't mind them deleting your edit comments, then simply leave comments inline in the post.

I have a question. When you say "moderators," do you mean any user group that has access to the ACP, or just the ability to edit others' posts?
