The merge-topics feature should be enhanced. Currently, even though I merge frequently, I get confused about which topic # survives the merge (the topic you paste into the text field or the topic from which you start the merge operation).

Even if I weren't so flaky, there is still a problem with merges: Dead links.

For example, if Topic #1 and Topic #2 merge, leaving only the combined Topic #1, any existing links to Topic #2 are now dead.
To solve this problem, I suggest that, when merging topics, the system be able to create a shadow topic, just like it can do now for moved topics, using old Topic #2. That way, existing links to Topic #2, would direct users to the new combined topic.

Does this make any sense, the way I'm describing it? What do you think?
