    Couldn't you just add an additional category layer to solve this problem? So you'd have for example:
    CATEGORY 1
    > CATEGORY 1.2
    >> FORUM 1, FORUM 2, FORUM 3, FORUM 4
    And do that for each category? That way the forums are nested an additional level, and the forum homepage will only display the one category group (Category 1.2 in this case) with, I imagine, posts from all four forums included in the feed.
