@Matt

Has it been decided internally about the new features?

Will Assigned Topic and Summary be features that are only available for the cloud?

I'm asking because if there is still hope that Assigned Topic will be available for the (Self-hosted) plan, I will wait. If it is officially decided that it will only be available for the cloud, I will seek an alternative solution with one of the experienced developers at IPS.

The new features have been added to the purchase page.

But I don't want to buy a cloud service, this link is for cloud services, right?

We see all our products as different packages, not so much "Self hosted versus cloud". If the feature is showing on a tier that is not the self hosted version, then it will not be available in the self hosted version.

This is correct. ?

Topic Summaries are available on Creator Pro (currently $149/month), whereas Assign Topics and Topic Summaries would be available on Business (currently at $549/month).

Ooooh this is very insane !

But thanks for your reply. 😬

I've been with IPB/IPS for about.... 18 years and I want to tell you that version no.5 is really impressive! Keep it up!

Same! I've been with them since 2002! I cannot wait to take my site to v5! Thank you everyone! <3

Could you explain further what you mean when you say this? An example perhaps

For example, is there a theoretical way to remove subforums and rely solely on tags, similar to how the fluid view works now? Or will the current setup remain unchanged?

For another example, when shopping online, you can apply filters (such as color or size), and the product list updates in real time as you make selections. Could this apply with topics?

If you were doing something like that, you would actually use forums with those names, along with fluid view. If you only wanted to use tags, I guess you could dump everything in one forum if you wanted to do so. But they have to belong somewhere

Just so I understand correctly, are tags only to be used by the admin?
Can mods use them?
Do forum members have the ability to select a tag to use when creating a post?

Thank you. I am just starting to build a brand new community now.

That's why we're here talking about it. We made decisions, and then adjust as needed based on feedback. However, I'm not sure that use of tags is mainstream. It's unusual to have 1000 tags, and the application is niche. But this is an open conversation.

I have 30K+ tags.
I just ran a query of the top 500 most used tags and the first tag is used over 51K times and that last tag is used over 1K times.

I have 13500 that are used at least 5 or more times.

I have loads of functional utility around these tags and my users love them. Not sure what's supposed to happen in my case.

Just curious, when you look at your most used tag, is it actually useful?

One observation I have about tag popularity - especially in large communities such as yours where you're starting to reach audience saturation - is that the top set of popular tags are probably so generic and so broad, it's almost meaningless. It would be akin using the tag "Invision" here in this community. It's the second tier of tags that start to provide meaningful taxonomy.

I am most worried about the thousands of long tail, unique, and niche tags that are highly structured that will be lost in the upgrade. Yes, there are misspellings, variants, and mistakes in there, but the corpus of our tagging will be lost if only the top X tags are retained (whatever that number is).

The use of tags can be by anyone who has the permission set within their group. The creation of tags can be done only by admin.
