Feature Request: Copy Topic

I'd like to see a "Copy Topic" moderator action implemented in 3.2. I know there is a "Move Topic" with leaving link, but I want to place a copy of the topic in another forum (with the option to copy replies or just the topic post). Basically, I want to do this for an FAQ type forum where a copy of topics that are discussing a frequently asked topic can be seen. After the copy operation, I would probably selective delete replies in the topic copy so just important posts are in the FAQ.

+1

I need this function also.

Copy post though. Post and topic would be good.

+1 I miss this feature from vb (yes I'm a convert)

This feature would be perfect for me, the idea gets a "yes" vote from me.

There is a paid mod that does this. Sorry can't post link as I am posting from phone but a search should find it. It's quite inexpensive and works perfectly for us

The point is this should be a feature, not a thread for this paid mod owner to spam everyone in this thread of their paid mod.

Just for the record. I am not the mod owner merely a satisfied purchaser of it for my own forum. Was only trying to help. Sorry if you feel the need to flame me for that but hey, that's your issue, not mine.

There is no flaming? are you on fire? i'm sure everyone else in this thread got the spam message too of the paid mod lol

No I didn't get any spam - just the message from a helpful HighlanderICT, pointing us to a mod that will do what the OP asked, until it becomes a feature of the main product.
I found this very useful, as I too would like this feature.

I'd love to see this feature - both the ability to copy topics and the ability to copy individual posts. It was really useful in vbulletin, one of the things I miss most. With IPB you sort of expect basic functions like this to be available without faffing around with plugins and whatnot; that's a vbulletin thing, it shouldn't be an IPB one.

I've seen some objections to this feature from longtime users and devs, but I honestly don't understand them. When I first started moderating, about 10 years ago, "make a copy of the thread and store it in the staff area before doing anything complicated with the active thread" was SOP, and a few times it's saved a thread from oblivion. And the ability to copy posts means that if a person writes a post about multiple topics that belong in different forums, the post can be copied, edited, and posted in all the relevant forums, which we can't do now.

It's just such a useful feature, I'm surprised we're coming up to 3.2 and still it doesn't seem to be on the horizon.

I'd definitely see the need of this feature on a couple of boards where I'm a moderator.
However, I want it to be a little bit more powerful than just "copying" a topic like vBulletin does.

I'd want to be able to choose when I copy a topic if I want to:

1. Mirror the topic, e.g. any posts made in orig topic(both previously made and posts made in the future) will be seen in the copied topic and vice versa, any posts made in the copied topic(posts made in the future) will be seen in the original topic.

2. One-way mirror, e.g. any posts made in the orig topic(both previously made and posts made in the future) will be seen in the copied topic but any posts made in the copied topic(posts made in the future) will NOT be seen in the original topic. On a sidenote: is it neccessary to be able to choose this option but in reverse? I can find no situation where you'd want all new replies in the copied topic to be seen in the orig topic but not see any new replies in the orig topic in the copied topic..

3. Regular, e.g. copy all the existing posts but don't link them together so any new posts in the orig topic won't display in the copied topic and the new posts in the copied topic won't be seen in the orig topic.

I never really found myself needing this feature.

A +1 for a copy topic / posts function, this would be very useful.

well if its a mod why not just implement it from that?

Because this is IPS, not vbulletin. In vbulletin you expect just about everything to be an add-on of some sort; the advantage of the IPS boards is that basic stuff is all there as part of the package. Except that this particular basic stuff isn't.
