iFramely integration is really cool because members can finally embed Instagram posts again. Unfortunately my community surpassed the free tier of 1000 hits in less than 24 hours lol.

How do I disable the 'Mark site read for new members' feature?

I knew that was coming.

There is no way in which to do this. By definition, thats the whole site, so there isnt really any "unread" for a new member

I understand, but this creates a significant usability issue due to how the 'Content Reading' settings work.

I have my community set to 'Take users to the first unread post'. Since this new feature marks everything as read for new members, the system treats the very last reply as the target.

As a result, when a new member clicks on a topic for the first time, they are immediately scrolled down to the last reply, completely skipping the main content (the first post).

I cannot disable the 'Take to first unread' setting because my existing members rely on it. Is there a way to prevent this specific behavior for new accounts so they land on the first post instead of the last?"

Actually the opposite would be true. If they havent read anything, it would take them to the beginning.

See below

Actually I stand corrected in this. It would be the first item since they have registered currently

But that is exactly the point! In your previous reply, you confirmed that the system automatically marks the site as 'Read' for new members.

So, technically, the system thinks they HAVE read everything. Because of this 'Read' status, when a new user clicks a topic, the logic for 'Unread content' does not apply. Instead, it jumps to the last post because the system assumes the user has already seen the previous content.

I need the system to treat them as if they truly haven't read anything (Unread status), so they start at the beginning

Thanks for the clarification. This confirms why the issue happens with older topics (existing content).

If a user opens a topic that was posted before they registered, there are no 'items since they registered'. Therefore, the system treats the entire topic as read.

Because of this, they are linked to the end of the thread instead of the beginning (Original Post).

My goal is simple: I want new members to land on the First Post of any topic they open, even if it's 5 years old.

Thank you for your feedback, and I have brought this up internally for discussion. At present however, it does indeed work as per my previous

On both of my communities, I have the thread title take whomever to the first post in the thread. Also, whereby clicking the ball/star, takes them to the first unread post. The memberships seems to like this structure.

I’ve registered with Iframely and confirmed that the Starter plan is available at no cost, with no time-limited trial. In other words, it provides a permanently free tier, which is excellent.

@Matt Finger From what I understand, we interact with the Iframely API, which returns the HTML for each embed.
If that HTML is cached on our side, a hit is only generated when the embed is created for the first time. Once cached, subsequent views will not trigger additional hits, since the embed content is served locally. Would this be possible?

According to the Iframely documentation:

I was wondering if the embeds could be cached (without problems with copyright). It seems that Iframely allow for this. If it is just Iframely's HTML which is cached, and the actual content is fetched directly from Twitter, FB, etc., I can see that this might work.

If, on the other hand, a hit is each and every time the embedded content is displayed to a member, that would be very expensive and not at all feasible.

What actually happens, if you choice to use iframely, and use it for a lot of links.
Then a year later you decide not to use iframely anymore. Do those items in forum posts revert back to a normal link or disapear?

An automated way to back out of using Iframely seems important. A way to automatically covert all Iframely embeds to links would make it more attractive.

Where, exactly, is this setting? I was not aware of this possibility.

Hi @Como,

What you're looking for (I think) is in your AdminCP → Members → Member Settings → Profiles → scroll to the bottom of the page and look under the Display Settings heading → When a member clicks an item link.

Your members can make their own adjustments in their Account Settings → Content Preferences → When opening content...

Thanks, Gary, but that's not it. I took the comment from @sharona to mean that there is an option to override that setting (which I have set to 'Take me to comments I haven't read', which I do not wish to change) by clicking the disk/star next to the topic title in the forum topics list.

But having now re-read Sharona's post, I think she means the options operate the other way around. That's fine (if it works - perhaps the option is dependent upon instead choosing the option 'Take me to the beginning'), but I do not wish to have that as default behaviour.

Thank you anyway, Gary (and Sharona).

@Gary is correct in his offering of the locating for setting. Changing the setting to, Take me to the beginning, only affects the thread title. The Ball/Star will still take you to the first unread content.

And, as Gary also adeptly points out, the membership can change the default setting via their UCP, to a custom setting of their own preference.

This actually doesn't work at all. I have set the "When a member clicks an item link" options in both AdminCP and my own account settings to "Take me to the beginning", but when I click the blue disc icon next to a forum thread it only takes me to the very start of the topic, and NOT to the latest comment as has been discussed here.

Bug report?

EDIT: Actually I tested again and it works correctly for 'star' icons (as in, forum topics that I have previously posted/interacted in), but the 'disc' icon (for topics that have new content but I have not yet posted in), seems to not work. Maybe the disc icon should not appear at all if the user has not yet read that topic at all, as that can be quite confusing.

Im a little confused as to what you mean there. "Take me to the beginning" would indeed be the start of the topic

We have released a patch to address the following:

  • An issue with some forms not saving changes.

  • An issue with the Warning form where a date was not selectable for the warning duration.

You can apply this patch from your AdminCP on the support page. If you do not see any patches available, that means you already have the latest version.

The idea that has been discussed in this topic is:

  • if you click the actual topic title link to the content, it behaves as you have set in user/admincp settings (in this case, "take me to the beginning")

  • but if you click the blue dot/star next to the topic title, it ignores that setting and should always direct user to the latest comment since last visit (this behaviour shouldn't change no matter what is set in user/admincp settings)

Some users here are saying it works as described above, but I am finding that the blue dot next to some topic titles will just take me to the beginning of the topic, rather than latest comment.

Hi @sharona. For some reason, this does not happen when I try it - clicking the ball/star takes me to the first unread post in the topic (not the opening post).

Edited to add: I have selected the default behaviour for when clicking topic titles to take the member to the first unread post within the topic.

Clicking the Star/Ball will bring you to the first Unread comment.

Yes, the Ball /Star will bring you to the first unread comment, while clicking the thread title will bring you to the thread starter. The setting has no effect on the Ball/Star.

Not sure why the functions are not working for either of you.

The difference for the Ball and Star icons is simply this - You see a Ball for topics you have not posted in, and a Star for topics you have posted in.

I would need to change setting for what happens when clicking the topic title (at my site, it takes the member to the first unread post). At present, the disk/star takes the member to the opening post. Perhaps these swap if I change the title setting? But I am unwilling to test it as I do not know how members might be affected - a quick test might result in longer-lasting effects. I dunno. But anyway, those two functions are opposite to yours at my site.

I think herein lies the UX confusion issue I mentioned before - if the entire topic is unread from the start, what purpose does the ball/star icon serve? It should be removed entirely if the user has not visited the topic at all.

I'm still waiting for the "Moderator reach thru the screen and slap the shet outta someone" Button.
