The later is possible now, the former will probably require a new version as it's a bit more complicated to include.

Comparing the above to my original image - the image size just appears bigger but the quality seems poor. What am I am after is a good quality thumbnail of the original of the original. If you compare that to the thumbnails up. Gallery generates: The quality is far superior - but looking at the HTML it looks like it has "trimmed / resized" the image on the fly to create a thumbnail, and not a separate image.
