Hello,
I enabled PWA on my Invision Community 5 site. Users can add the site to their phone's home screen, but when they open it, it still runs in the browser instead of as a standalone app. How can I fix this?

  • I don’t think you can compare the speed of a production site against my localhost connected to a tunnel via ngrok so I could record on my phone using a site in dev mode with all caching off.

  • I can hear that gif lol

  • Ehren is available at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store this weekend to demonstrate how phones work in person.

I just sent you a message via DM, thank you

I’ve just tested your site and it’s loading in a dedicated web app for me.

I added it to my iPhone's home screen, but when I tap the icon, it opens in the browser instead of opening like a full-screen app. Also, even though I added it, it still shows me the "use web app" prompt.

That sounds very much like a device issue that you have there unfortunately.

Thank you very much. It seems the issue was due to my mistake. I tested it on another iPhone and an Android phone, and it works as it should just like it does for you. But on my phone, due to a problem on my end, it opens in the browser when I tap the icon.

I’ll keep you updated on any news.

Glad to hear you at least found the cause :)

Marc, I have one more question.
Can I enable all notifications by default for all members?
For users using the PWA, how can I make all notifications enabled by default without requiring them to manually turn them on?

For a noob to PWA, can you please let me know how I get my site on the home page of my phone?

Thanks

Should see a little banner on top explaining when you're browsing your site.

What version of iphone you have and iOS version?

This was fixed yesterday and will be patched in the final 5.0.10 (non-beta) version 👍

iPadOS 16.6 is quite outdated but it should work fine on that version.

After the final of 5.0.10 still does not trigger anything for that ipad on 16.6 (released in 2023). Also under share option are no options to install the app.
Don't think 16.6 is that old.

For example i have a few android devices with android 8. That are from 2017 and there all works well.

It isnt however the latest release of iOS 16, so would need updating

Are they located in the EU by any chance? It seems like there may be some restrictions implement by iOS due to the DMA which causes the app to open in the browser instead of its own window.

Also make sure they’re using Safari since other browsers may not support PWA installation on iOS.

I’ll look into this using an iPadOS 16 emulator as it’s working correctly in iPadOS 18.

All users of our community are in the EU. However its only a smart % of users that have reported that on iOS, and other admin / mods that have iOS works fine. I have ask a few users what versions they are using.

Some users in ipad report that when they see the black banner with the notification that there is an App, and then they try to click the "More Information" link. Then nothing shows up.

From what version of ipad's/safari should that link work?

I was able to reproduce this issue using an iOS 16 simulator and I have fixed it locally. I spent the day testing the modal across a bunch of devices and it now works on all iPhones and iPads running iOS 15, 16, 17 and 18.

It'll be patched in the next software update 🤝

Hello,

I’ve started testing the PWA mobile app. I installed it on the test users' phones.
Notifications were enabled from the website.

However, the events that are supposed to trigger notifications are not reaching the users’ phones as push notifications.
So, do special notification settings need to be configured on the phones?
There should be a way to send notifications without requiring users to manually adjust these settings.
Anyone have any ideas?

Push notifications need to be enabled from the Notification settings page. There’s a block at the bottom of that page with more information.

Having exclusively used the PWA on iPhone now for the last couple of days, one minor improvement could be made.

Push notifications, if you press the notification it currently takes you to the top of the page the post is on.

Ideally it would take you to the exact post you have been mentioned or quoted if possible, or even to the unread line would be something.

Notifications enabled per device, Android/Chrome, notifications are not coming through.

Same problem for me :/ Android and IOS

I had the same problem at the beginning. Try resetting the permissions for the site, and after opening the notifications, a prompt should appear asking if you want to enable push notifications. Then just click "allow" and they should start working properly at least that’s how it worked for me.

  • Management

When notifications are not delivered, and you've checked your notification settings on the site to make sure push is ticked, then it will always be the OS stopping it.

That could be because you've previously blocked permissions, or it might be that you have focus mode on, or some other reason. As PanSevence suggests, try resetting permissions for the site and trying again.
