Hi,

On  Wordpress I use pretty links plugin to make easy to remember URLs to certain posts and pages.

Is there a way I can do this on here too?

Example:

i have a forum post that has turned into a really good guide, I want to be able to tell people to go to mysite.com/guide

or I have an event in my calendar and I want to easily promote it. Mysite.com/event then later change that url to point at the latest event each month

id this possible?

Hi,

I'm still struggling get a resolution on this.

Either I am doing something wrong, or its not a feature.

1 example of what I want to do;

A section on my forum is for my local gaming group - http://www.tga.community/forums/forum/16-derby-wargames-society/

I would like to be able to tell people to go to http://www.tga.community/derby to land on this page

a 2nd example.

I recently ran an event.  The event was called alliance and the listing was here - http://www.tga.community/forums/topic/1071-events-uk-alliance/

I would like to tell people to go to http://www.tga.community/events

That event has now finished and the next one is being advertised soon.  I would like to use the same short link and now redirect it to the new event page.

How do I do this?

Thanks, Ben

Ok, I had another look at this.  What i'm struggling on now if finding the 'real url' of any given page of the site.  When i browse to the forum section that I want to create a new friendly link to I get this http://www.tga.community/forums/forum/16-derby-wargames-society/

but when creating a new 'friendly url'  the 'real url' should look like what @Nathan Explosion has posted.

I tried copying the layout that you posted (forum id16 is the correct section) but i just got a page not found error when following my easy link

Any help?

Thanks

@Nathan Explosion I have the /Derby link working now.  I must have had a typo in there somewhere, thanks.

But I still do not know how I would find the 'Real URL' for any page that I wanted to create a friendly link for.

I also do not know the 'consequences' of creating links this way.  Dos the old version now not work?

what does this mean?  - Adjusting these settings is recommended only for advanced users. Custom URLs are not backwards compatible with the default URLs and so any changes will have an immediate negative effect on your search engine rankings.

There are loads of examples right there on the friendly url page which you can copy the 'real url' from - that's how I did the 2 examples.

No reason why the 'old' version won't work at all - so no consequences. You're not affecting the urls other than creating new ones.

It means "don't change things here unless you know what you are doing and are able to handle the potential problems you create if you cause an existing friendly url to no longer work"....add away. But don't edit the existing items.

And you don't need to keep mentioning me on your replies - I get notified anyway when you reply.

Thanks for taking the time to go through this with me.

On wordpress there is a plugin that can set up easy redirects and also the option to set the 'slug' on every page and post.  Its really simple.  IPS is not so 'idiot proof' at times...

Some would say the same about WordPress! I find IPS much easier to use than any of the times I tried to set up a WP site
