Our new Image Scanner and Discoverability AI keeps your community safe (Video)

Invision Community AI can now automatically detect and hold images not suitable for your community.

Our new Image Scanner and Discoverability tool, built into the newly-launched Smart Community section of the ACP for clients on select standard plans, has immense moderation power.

This new AI feature scans images uploaded by a member, detects what objects the image contains then decides whether or not it’s appropriate to share the image within the community.

If the AI believes the image contains anything adult, suggestive and racy, visually disturbing and/or violent, it will either hold the image for moderation or reject the image altogether.

Could contain: Text

Should the image meet the approval requirements and get posted, the image is labeled with what the image “could contain.” These terms optionally show when hovering over the image and allow the image to appear as a search result.

These keywords will also support your search.

In this example, I searched for the word “apple,” and results included a photo that @Matt posted of an apple.

Could contain: Text, File, Webpage

Score thresholds

Each uploaded image is assigned a score - essentially a gatekeeper to what is deemed appropriate (and what isn’t).

How does the AI determine this score?

For each of the categories, a score is returned indicating how confident the service is that the image matches the corresponding category. Depending on the threshold percentage, you can choose to either hold the post for approval, or reject the image.

If the content being posted cannot be held for approval (for example inside a personal conversation) the image will be rejected at either threshold.

When choosing your percentages, the higher the percentage, the more confident you want the AI to be when it scans images and identifies what the image contains and before holding or rejecting the image.

For example, if an image is scanned for adult content and the threshold is 75% or greater in confidence that it contains adult content, the platform will hold the image for moderator approval. For the same image, if it is 85% or greater in confidence that it contains adult content, it will reject the image.

If you want to hold more images, resulting in more moderator oversight, you would keep your percentages low.

For example, if an image is scanned for visually disturbing content and is 40% or greater in confidence that it contains visually disturbing content, the image will be held for moderator approval. For the same image, if it is 75% or greater in confidence that it contains adult content, it will reject it.

The same applies to the suggestive and racy / violence and gore categories:

Could contain: Text, Computer Keyboard, Electronics, Computer, Hardware, Keyboard, Computer Hardware

Here are a few more real life examples:

Example 1: A sneaky troll decides to disrupt a corporate brand community by posting NSFW images. The image detection can automatically enforce predetermined rules set by the administrator and stop the photo from seeing the light of day in the community.

Example 2: A travel company has a community for people to share vacation experiences and information with others. Someone innocently posts a photo wearing a bikini during their trip to the beach, however posting scantily clad images in this community goes against the terms of the community. It is therefore automatically either held for moderation, or is automatically hidden from view.

The Image Scanner and Discoverability feature is available now on select standard plans.

ACP -> System -> Smart Community -> Features -> Image Scanner

Please note the video above uses a Beta version of the Image Scanner; the screen shots in this post reflect the most up-to-date interface. However, the logic remains the same. 😀

It's not big ask - from AlexWebsites, Adriano and many others to clearly indicate in blog title - Cloud only feature.

"Example 1: A sneaky troll decides to disrupt a corporate brand community

Example 2: A travel company"

He's already made it quite clear who this is aimed at in his examples and there are no surprises.

Get used to it most of you on this forum and those who never visit are a side hustle and beta testers and also free adverts (because of branding and backlink) for Invision Community.

Nice to see Invision still innovating and offering new features.

I don't mind that it's "cloud-only", as long as they still keep basic updates for self-hosted I'm happy with that.

I imagine (and I could be wrong) that this is increasingly aimed at more corporate/professional clients. The people who make money and spend money, which Invision needs.

In the end many of these are "bells and whistles" – nice to haves but won't transform (or save) your community; only content and mindshare will do that, not these, so let the cloud folk have them.

🤕Yep... and only on the Business version? $619 / month?

Are there number how many clients these these plans have? Like are there more then 20 clients on business plan that get these new features?

I mean even 20 clients on business beats 500+ self host customers in terms of price. Which is why they're pushing cloud so they make more money providing the same service. They have 27,450 active clients (anyone who's renewed within the last 6 months) which is a increase of 194 from last year.

However, the last 4 months there's only been an increase of 22 active clients, about the same time they started pushing cloud exclusives. Don't think their methods are really paying off unless they're converting a bunch of people to cloud which may be the case since they're intentionally gating useful features behind cloud

This feature also for the cloud users? Is this some kind of JOKE...??

Unfortunately delivering AI based features does require one of our higher monthly packages and isn't something that we can bring to the self hosted forum license which is funded by the $80/year renewals.

Not 100% true. I pay 300$/year appx (I try to renew mostly on time but life expenses take priority on hobby expenses).

I get your 80$ calculation but just mentioning like me and many others, have your other addons, which adds to 300$/year and we haven't seen any ground breaking changes in Pages, Commerce, Blogs, etc. since few years.

Commerce is worst application for my use and I hope it can be improved, so that I can use either Commerce/Nexus or Donation but not forced to use both. Apologies for off topic on Commerce addon.

Not just that.  Another example is the fact that the Pages app is missing many essential features, and the hump day topic pages pages pages has many great suggestions to make it better as it was a year ago or more. However, none of these suggestions or flaws have even been taken into consideration. It served only as another hump day discussion subject to increase participation from the members.

I must have a bug on my interface, can you refund me all the overpayments since the last 10 years?

Now to be serious, your comments on self-housing are becoming annoying and your justifications ridiculous.

Even after the outcry about the lack of communication following your price increase, you don't even control the price of your product ($80 per year, $40 every six months), forgetting that this one is rarely bought alone .

And that's not counting ipb's commission on each application purchase/renewal.

Sincerely,

Kims

The forum only package renews at $80/year. The AI content moderation would works primarily on the forum package.

I do realise that some of our customers also have other applications, but I was addressing the cost of the service to us versus the income we make on the forum renewals. 🙂

The gallery and page modules are also, depending on the organization of a community, modules where photos can be used by members.

There are 4747 images in the gallery by our members for 9,1K subjects and 131,4k answers as an example.
An AI analysis for the search would therefore potentially be a big plus.

It would really be appreciated if IPS stopped the cloud hard-sell. Self-hosting is a requirement for many people. You should sell a value-added service (monthly) to cover things that are services as an optional add-on for self hosted users at a bare minimum.

Some of the features which are cloud only, such as live threads, should be simply given to self-hosted users with a "this only works if you can configure your server / use at your own risk" disclaimer. I will not be switching to cloud, and many customers feel this way. Please listen to us. You will lose customers if you keep on this path, I guarantee it. If there's much more strongarm tactics to force people onto cloud services, I will not be here long.
