I feel it would be a nice option when creating a root category to be able to centre align the heading text.

You can already skin it that way if you want. The purpose of the Look & Feel section of the Admin CP is to give you the ability to re-style the things you want so that they'll look the way you want them to.

You can .. not saying its recommended as may play havoc in the admincp

when create the forum category try

<center>Name of Category</center>

... would recommend Michaels suggestion above

Pretty sure the ACP (the descriptor) will accept and parse HTML although its not a great idea to do that as above it can mess with the Manage Forums page itself in the ACP.

A skin tweak is more sensible in most cases. :)
