4.4: Converter updates to make migrating to Invision Community even easier

We want to ensure that converting from your existing community platform to ours is as seamless as possible.

While we do have a migration service available where we take care of everything for you, we do also offer a DIY option.

We took some time to overhaul the conversion process for those opting to convert using our free tools.

Ready to convert?

So you've just purchased your first copy of Invision Community, and you're ready to convert your existing site over from another software package. Great! We're glad you've made the decision to take your community to the next level!

You've already checked out our Migrations page, confirmed the software you wish to convert from is supported, and you're confident in your ability to work through the process. You install the Converters package and you're ready to go.

Lets get started!

We have overhauled the converters to simplify the process. Beginning with 4.4, you will take the following steps to convert from another software package:

  • Rather than choose the application you wish to convert first, you will now choose what software you are converting from, which is a much more logical start to a conversion.
  • Next, you will supply the database details for your source database (the database you wish to convert into your new Invision Community).
  • Then, you will see a list of all applications that can be converted for the software package you are converting from. If any applications cannot be converted (perhaps because you were not previously using the corresponding application in your source software), a message will be shown indicating there is nothing to convert. If any steps require additional configuration, you will be able to specify those details here.
  • And finally, when you submit that form - that's it! You're done, and you can sit back and let the conversion process on its own. Each step for each application will be completed automatically, and the conversion will be finalized automatically at the end. A progress bar will be shown, along with a textual indicator that outlines exactly what is being converted.

What does it look like?

Here's a quick video to illustrate the new conversion process.

The system even remembers where you were at and automatically picks back up where you left off. Closing your browser, losing internet connectivity, or some other unforeseen issue won't stop you dead in your tracks and force you to start all over again.

We hope that these updates make it even easier to switch from another community platform.

A few questions:

  • Will we be able to see the imported count versus the amount found like in the current converter? This is useful for us to see if anything has been missed given we are a large community
  • Does the post rebuilt happen at the end automagically I presume?

Part of me kind of doesnt mind the old system if we could queue all the settings then hit go for all the applications to trigger and continue one after another but getting an end import report showing what was found and what got imported would be very helpful and if any count is off a message on the import screen telling you so you can stop and investigate.

A lot of my concerns would only be ones larger boards would probably worry about though.

This is great. I'm glad you put it together.

Something like this would have helped me months ago.

You want to convert more people over to IPS?

Create more videos, articles, and better guides and show how easy it is to use.

Think of small AND big board admins when creating these. Each group want to hear something specific ... something that helps them make a decision. Something that helps them take that first step.

I can tell you this...

Big Board admins would love to hear that IPS conversion script saves old topicids for mapping purposes (to redirect old urls to new). The more info you provide the better. (It was hard to find this info last year.)

One question that bugs me but haven't checked...

Does the conversion script save old attachment ids?? (Specifically images.) To redirect old attachment image URLs to new. I'm only asking because I know a lot of vbulletin sites that have accumulated many many images over the years. (Thinking SEO here.)

  1. The UI is greatly simplified so that this information isn't visible, we do however still log any issues to the database so that can be reviewed. It's important to remember that the converted counts won't always match, we mostly see this with vB where the database can contain a lot of orphaned data.
  2. Yes, any required rebuilds and processes are automatically started when the conversion is completed.

Thanks for the feedback!

The converter saves ids for almost everything converted, vBulletin attachment.php URLs will be redirected automatically to the relevant location. We try to redirect as many (important) URLs as possible.

I want to merge by existing IPB board forum with phpBB v2 forum, is is possible? How to do it?

Yes it is! First of all though, you'll need to upgrade your PhpBB site to v3.1 or v3.2 and then you can use our converter application to complete the conversion. If you're using Invision Community 4.4 it's super simple to do (as shown in the video above).

Thanks for the information.

Have there been any changes to the speed of conversion? Last time checked, it would take a couple of days to convert a bigger forum.

Performance improvements have been made across the board, including to the converters.
