Whether you call them Champions ๐คฉ, Advocates ๐, or Superusers ๐, every community contains an elite group of members that carriesย ๐ the community.ย They don't just drink the kool-aid ๐ง.ย They mix, chug, and swim ๐โโ๏ธin the community kool-aid.
Learn ๐ขย fourย community management concepts about Superusers in less than ๐ย four minutes.
1. 90-9-1 Rule (aka "1% rule"):ย The 90-9-1 principle refers to the lopsided inequality of user engagement that 90% of users are lurkers ๐, 9% of members contribute from time to time ๐, and 1% of users ๐ธ account for almost all contributions.ย Superusers are the 1%.ย ย
2. Intrinsic Motivator: Motivation that comes from internal motivation๐, rather than any external rewards. This could be a sense of satisfaction ๐, pride ๐ค, ownership, loyalty, friendship ๐ค, or other emotional and internal motivator.ย Long-term superusers ๐ are wired to intrinsic motivation.ย Tapping into intrinsic motivation is key to providing new motivation for superusers.
3. Spiral of Silence:ย Be careful โ ๏ธ, however, that your superusers don't overwhelm ๐ the conversation which can lead to the Spiral of Silence: a theory that as the vocal minority becomes louder ๐ข, other members adopt the same views or fail to share opposing views. You'll need to privately manage this vocal minority, especially if they're negative ๐ข.ย ย ย ย ย
4. Work Out Loud ๐ฌ: An engagement practice for superusers to visibly share ๐ฃ their work online in your community. It offers opportunities for superusers and members toย openly share ๐ฏ theirย knowledge, generosity, purposeful discovery, and growth โจ. Usually entire point โด๏ธ of communities of practice.
