Unusual issue with our site forum tonight

A member and myself experienced ( different) strange things happening around 10pm UK time tonight.

One member said whenever he clicked a 'notification' to view it, he got the 'You do not have permission to view this forum' message.

He could still access the particular forum from the home page, but not via Notifications.

I opened several sub-forums from the main home page ( open in new tab ) , and once they loaded, they said  'No Topics In this forum', and no sign of any Topics!

It showed me the 'start new topic' button though. As I'd just completed re-doing this whole forum last week, you can imagine my heart jumped into my throat! i though they gone for good.

10 minutes later, and everything was working correctly

Are you aware of any issues this evening at all ?. I know the site gets backed up once a week, and did think this may be happening at the time, causing the problems.

Still on V4, and have been tidying the forum up in prep for updating to V5 in the next few weeks.

The most common with what you are saying there is when the forum has been changed to be a category. It wont remove the topics, but you wont be able to see them. Is there a possibility this has happened?

  • Author

Hi Marc,

No, no categories had been changed. As mentioned, the problem resolved itself some 10 minutes after, and hasn't happened since.

A forum was deleted ( on purpose) a few hours before the incidents.

I was hoping you were going to say 'yes, there were some issues'

Thanks

Unfortunately, without experiencing the issue as you did there I am just guessing but if these sub-forums or topics were moved as a part of deleting the forum, this is done as a background task so could have taken some time and you just viewed it mid-move.

  • Author

Hi Jim,

I did consider that, but it was a good hour or so afterwards when it started, and ACP>Forums ( where I deleted it from) said 'moving or deleting' the forum for about 20 minutes, then went all clear.

We can't rule it out though,

I'll have to see if it happens again. I also thought it may be being backed-up at the time as the cause.

Update to the situation,

A user reported that we have lots of photos missing form one of our forums.

In some sub-forums, theirs no photos at all, only links of text.

if I open any of the links in a new tab, i get

AccessDeniedAccess DeniedPV5HVF24ES7MQE1QeVqYv6Q6LkSIEgwPI8hDdCSOTH9C7vRtxqDqIM1mmvq34HmY4nLBvorMM4z0Iu9oMcHJffWZ41GHhLnnWTm9XDbAsUpJMwyF

( we've had the odd one or two photos disappear over the years, but we were able to recover them from a duplicate forum in the past, unfortunately we don't have a duplicate forum for the one effected this time)

We don't have any issues with our photo hosting company as far as I'm aware, so this is a bit of a mystery now. These are all photos and topics that were copied from a previous forum over a fortnight ago, which up until now, appear to have been visible.

Looking for help or advice on how to resolve this issue now please ?

What usually happens here, is that they are linked from another topic, and that original topic gets deleted. As they are attached to the original, they are deleted along with it

  • Author

Hi Marc,

Thank you for explaining that.

So if I 'copy' a forum within ACP > Community > Forums , It only copies links to photos, and not the 'actual' photos ?

Can I discuss with someone my options to recover the deleted forum please ?

The forum was deleted on 15th June, 1 weeks ago.

I then need to know how to transfer the photos from it to the new ( current) version of the forum so the photos remain.

Thanks

Sorry, I feel there is confusion here. Are they photos within topics?

In terms of reverting, we please open a ticket if you wish to do this. You need to bear in mind though that you will lose everything since that point in time as its a full restore

  • Author

Yes, photos within topics. Mainly one long topic in each of 55 odd forums, but each had many photos within them.

they were in a forum that was set up as a for 'discussion's' instead of 'a category' originally. We were unable to move anything in them to another forum, so i copied the existing forum, and made it 'Category', then copied the topics over to the new forum.

If we do the restore, can you tell em how I can copy the photos over from the 'restored' topic to the current version of it, so I can delete the 'restored' topic at a later date ?

Thanks

I should add, that not all photos disappeared though.

  • Author

So I'd have to download all the photos individually first, then use the new post dialogue box, and 'choose files' to add ?

I have to go to work now, but will get back to you later today,

I think we had something similar done last year, but I'm sure your team just added the 'problem' forum back in rather than a full restore

Thanks for your help Marc.

  • Community Expert

Yes that would be correct.

We are not able to restore individual forums unfortunately.

  • Author

Can you give me the date it would roll back to if we do a 'restore' please ?

I guess all photos in the 'deleted' forum will still show as normal if restored ?

i ask so I can copy any new posts from that date until now.

Thanks

By default, we can provide a weekly backup but if anything further than that is needed, we can typically do so at cost. However, I would suggest submitting a ticket so we can gather information on this and escalate this to a manager for specifics on when, cost, etc...

Hi Jim,

How do I raise a ticket, as other times both Marc and yourself have done it for us.

Hi Marc, Jim.

I still haven't heard back from management, in regards to the email you sent me last Tuesday 30th June.

I have replied to the email twice asking for an update, but had no response to it at all.

Thanks

Sorry, requests to this level typically take some time. We also had a holiday on Friday and this weekend. I apologize for the delay.
