Custom Ad Banner Placement in IPS5

Featured Replies

I'm getting ready to migrate to IPS5, and I asked my preferred developer how I can continue displaying banners the same way I do with IPS4. He told me it's a problem because "IPS5 doesn't allow changes; there are no hooks anymore."

On my IPS4 site, I have three banner categories:

  1. Two banners at the top of desktop pages (or one at the top and one at the bottom of mobile pages).

  2. Banners along the left edge of all forum pages.

  3. Banners between every few comments inside a discussion.

This ad space is key to my business.

Is it possible to configure an IPS5 site to do this? If you can do this work for me, please message me.

My dev has been unable to make this work.

The site is hosted by IPS.

I am open to suggestions and am looking for a dev that can make this work. I can not move to IPS5 until this is solved.

@Daniel F My dev said "about creating new templates. That's easy, and it's ok. The problem is how to tie the template to the ads... I couldn't find a way to do that, as there are no more custom locations."

Except for the adverts on the left side of the image, in the OP. You can make all of those other positions work with the out-of-the-box software. Add if you were willing to move the adverts from the left side of the page, to the right, you could place them there and have the same amount of adverts.

@My Sharona I would be very happy to do this without any custom code.

@Daniel F Can you confirm that if I move the side banners from the left side to the right side - I can do all all this without code?

  1. Two banners at the top of desktop pages (and one at the top and one at the bottom of mobile pages).

  2. Multiple Banners along the right edge of all forum pages.

  3. Banners between every few comments inside a discussion.

  4. Also banners between banners between topics on forum index page

See https://www.ballofspray.com/forums/ for how my banners are currently served.

Your dev is correct in one regard, there are no options in IPBv5 for custom ad locations (aka to use the built in ad system) like there was in IPBv4, I am not sure why it was removed to be honest.

Sure.

To achieve the double header advert placement, and the side bar advert placement, like you are desiring, you would have to create the adverts in Blocks. For the head adverts, you would then place two blocks, side-by-side above the main portion of the page, For adverts to the right of the main content area, you would need to enable the Sidebar content area and add blocks as you deem fit.

As for the Adverts between topic rows and/or Posts, there is a function for that in the ACP. System > Site Promotion > Advertisements.

I would suggest working within an IPS test environment to see if you can get the exact look you are desiring, before migrating though.

Shoot me a pm if you like.
