Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications Matt November 11, 2024Nov 11
Posted July 11, 201014 yr I think it's pretty important for IP.Chat to at least get to the standards of IRC, a decade-old technology that is free of charge. Most people are using IRC as a form of chat, and would appear to be the strongest IP.Chat competitor. Some features that are very important: 1.) A cross platform, browser-independent client. Need not be overly complex, but must able to run in the background. (read: iPhone/Windows are NOT the only platforms) 2.) Multi-room creation, especially important for staff or usergroup discussions. 3.) Room titles and welcome messages. These are very important to new users, especially. Also, if you can expose IP.Chat via an IRC protocol, it will solve problem #1 and also open up IP.Chat for mobile devices, as there's a client for IRC on most devices. No offense to IP developers, but the feature-set must at least compare with free technologies before you start charging for it.
August 4, 201014 yr I totally agree with this. IRC has a lifetime of features that should at least be recognised, and used in your own system. Also I agree with the fact that IRC is a great piece of software, I used to use it a lot back in the day. I think combining the intuitive knowledge that InvisionPower has with the technical possibilities of an open-source software, you could create something a lot more powerful than what IP.Chat currently offers.
August 4, 201014 yr Errr... It's web based for a reason, it's goal is to be integrated feature set with IP.Board.. If it's got its own client than it is no longer this so. IRC allows file sharing via DCT which a lot of board Admins probably don't want to do..Also ip.chatworks on *nix, OS X, Windows so it
August 4, 201014 yr We've said it before - if you want to use something like IRC that's fine. If I'm not mistaken, there's even an IRC chat integration module in our resources area. However, we will not be porting IP.Chat to an IRC backend in the foreseeable future.
