I have not seen this option but there should be one were u can disable it and it removes it from the view forum.

Would be nice to have an option to disable these. I don't use them on my forum and removed them from my custom skin (basically in the topic view and message editing pages. Don't remember if they show up anywhere else).

I have mine set to Admin-Only, by only allowing a single usergroup to pick the icon. Then, I can use it for (!) announcements or such.

Just remove them from your FTP, save the in a folder just encase you ant to re-install them.

I changed mine, but saved the default icons in folder.
