New: Gallery Lightbox Navigation

This entry is about our IPS Community Suite 4.2 release

Improvements to our Gallery application, both in terms of new functionality and minor enhancements, are coming in 4.2. One area that was identified early on for improvement was the Gallery image view page and specifically how the lightbox feature available on this page behaved.

We adjusted the buttons that overlay the main Gallery image to use icons instead of text

If you click to view an alternative image size, we improved the header styling of this page as well for clarity and to allow easier downloading of the image you are viewing

When viewing an image, you can open the image in a lightbox by clicking the icon at the very top far right corner. When doing so, there was previously a button at the bottom left hand corner of the lightbox if you wanted to download the image. We modernized this experience by implementing an overlay that you can click on in order to download the full size image instead.

You will notice there are now left/right arrows in the lightbox view here. You can click left/right to scroll through the images in the container, just as if you clicked through the images in the photostrip immediately below the image on the main page. You can also use the left/right arrow keys on your keyboard. While this would navigate through the photostrip previously, it will now also navigate through the images in the lightbox as well.

When viewing on your mobile device, the lightbox has been cleaned up allowing more image to display which is a welcome change for your mobile users.

We have more changes coming to Gallery in 4.2 which we will be revealing soon but in the mean time we hope you enjoy these useful improvements.

4.2 done.

I'm going to quote this as a company source leaking that 4.2 is done.

But sweet baby Jesus, that means I need to create a 4.3 teaser topic already.  I'm not even done typing up all of my reaction posts, I really think we need to stay on 4.2 for a tad longer.  Just a tad.  Long enough for you to release more gallery stuff.  Then you can proceed.

On a serious note, what are the permissions for downloading images / albums? Are they membergroup global perms or category perms? Do album owners control if users can download?

Or will all this be unveiled in 4.3??

The download button simply downloads the image you are currently viewing (which can of course also be done by simply right clicking the image and choosing to save it in virtually every browser available today). It does not require permission controls.

Perhaps a highly selfish and specialized request, but are there any plans for group ability to add Notes to an image and not just Administrators?  I'll even go further and suggest a comment/reply function so people can discuss images or hey, just tag people in photos and laugh at them. ^_^

PS these changes look sweet - can't wait!

Looks great. I hope something is done with the gallery automatic file name as title/name.

I also would love to see the ability to shut off image embed and add attachments in the editor of a gallery addition. Just causes too much confusion in some cases.

Does this mean attached images in posts will open in a lightbox when viewed on mobile devices or do these changes only apply to Gallery?

This blog entry was specifically about changes to the lightbox in Gallery, not elsewhere (although the overlay to download applies suite-wide).

Nice additions, appreciated effort.

I dont know about you guys, but viewing IP gallery pictures is not the best experience. Mostly when pictures are taken in big resolution and monitor simply resizes the photo to fit in the screen. Thus you can miss a lot of details unless you lick on view full size and open a new window. Thats very irritating.

Why wont you consider opening pictures just like here? https://www.skelbiu.lt/skelbimai/canyon-grandcanyon-al-6-9-10kg-27785509.html

Dont be scared of not english language, but just lick once on the picture on the right and once again when it is displayed already in full. you can scroll up and down to see in full detail. What do you guys think?
