Struggling with Return Key Behavior: Start new paragraph or Go to next line?

Featured Replies

I don't understand the distinction between the two settings here under ACP > System > Settings > Posting & Editor > Content > Return Key Behavior.

I tried the same sequence (paste one lorem ipsum paragraph, press return twice, paste the same paragraph again) with both settings and got the same results in both cases. I inspected the HTML produced with dev tools and see the same HTML structure of one paragraph with lorem ipsum, one empty paragraph, and one paragraph with lorem ipsum.

What am I missing?

This behavior is for typing in the editor, not pasting into the editor. If you paste into the editor, the editor will assume the styling of the source that you copied.

I was pasting text without style though.

I tried typing and got the same results.

When hitting the return key, it will create a paragraph break when hitting enter or it will create a line break. These CSS emulated responses instead of using <p> and <br />

I would suggest disabling all customizations you have on your community because it is working fine for my local installation.

Thanks. Because I don't fully understand what to expect when choosing one setting versus the other, it's possible that I'm doing something wrong.

I created a new test forum using the default IPS style with no customizations.

The only difference I can see between the two settings appears in the editor before I submit the post.

After I submit the post, the generated HTML is identical in both cases, and the post looks the same regardless of which setting I choose.

Is that the expected behavior?

Yes, it will look identical as it is done via CSS.

The difference will be the distance between the paragraph tags, otherwise, the content will be indentical.

Ok then I don't see any difference? Here's a first post I posted while Go to next line was selected.

And here's one I posted while Go to next paragraph was selected.

The space between the lines look the same?

Keep in mind, when you change the setting, you change them all. It will work retroactively. That may be causing your confusion.

OK! So that was indeed the confusion. I was under the impression that it would affect only new posts you made. Thanks, that clears up a lot.

Still the funny thing is that now that I see you've ran some test on my forum, my original posts do look different, but earlier when I was changing that setting, they kept looking the same. Maybe you have to clear system cache each time you change that setting for the CSS to apply?

Yes, your browser may be caching the reply if one setting is looking like the other.
