4.5: Forum View Updates

Invision Community has had different view modes for a good number of years.

Forum grid view was added to create some visual interest when listing forums, and we've had expanded and condensed view modes in streams since they were introduced.

We've taken both of these views a step further in Invision Community 4.5

Forum Grid View
To create even more visual interest, the grid view now allows you to upload, or choose a stock image for the header. This instantly makes for a more dynamic and inviting forum list.

You can choose an image from the Admin CP when creating or editing a forum.

Topic List View
For the topic list view, we have taken inspiration from our stream view options to introduce a new 'expanded' view mode, which displays a snippet of the first post.

The new expanded topic list mode

This immediately entices you to engage with the topic because you can read part of the post without having to click inside to see if it interests you.

This is controlled via the Admin CP, where you can choose the default view, or turn off the new view completely.

Other Changes
You may notice a few other subtle changes in these screenshots. The first is that we now included the follower count as a metric on both the forum grid view and the topic expanded view modes. The number of followers is usually a good indicator of how others perceive the value of the content. A higher follower count generally means a more engaging topic or forum.

You can also see that we've switched to a short number format to keep the displays clean. Instead of say, "2,483 posts", it will merely say "2.5k posts". Reducing visual clutter is always crucial to maintaining a clean user interface.

We hope that you find these new view modes useful and that they make your community even more vibrant!

How does this display on mobile?

I hide all of this on mobile to save space and to get to the topic list quick, but looking at how its styled in with the page numbers now I'm guessing its adding more bulk to it

thank you for all this work. It's very good I find that IPS is really starting to be adapted to the level of needs as ease of navigation today.

I am far from being a designer but wonder if I should continue to write on the images directly in this way because I know that it is not too pleasant and a little difficult to read depending on the background colors.

Why not write below the image or use tools to better see ...

We could put an icon post and next to a number, an icon follower and next to a number, to avoid writing overload as much as possible

I like this idea a lot, I've been looking to do something like myself. Dave has done something similar on his StarTrekGate site.

Could this be an option? I would like to upload a picture with text already on it and have the info below (as seen above).

this is a design example that has nothing to do with IPS, and that I just took as an example from the web

What is interesting is to see that the text is very visible on the image using certain tools.

But as soon as the important title has been placed on the image and not on the image.

I would not even be surprised that today the users do not read the white texts on the images because the pages are scanned visually and it is not seen then.

We own a visual effects business and text on image is a bit of a nightmare, which is why most titles in broadcast will have either a solid background, or be formatted in some way, such as a 'lower third', or similar.

But on the whole, this is a great improvement, and presumably allows us to easily format text and container with CSS.

Yes, like default gallery you can probably use some custom css and darken the text container over the image. I also don’t like the text over the image because it gets lost. Maybe something like

I agree with this. Would love an option to list the information below the image instead of on top of it. This makes it much easier to read and doesn't block the image.

Would be nice if you could implement data-pagecontroller per each view and block controls for each view.

I love this idea as well.

Again, thank you for all your hard work on this. You've done a great job. I love the improvements and am looking very forward to 4.5! 👍

Yes exactly, although we have to keep an eye on overlay to image ratio, else it'll look a little congested?

Thinking something like this (or others from the demos on top menu):

WP Plugin - The Grid

And for some nice layout effects, add something like: Packery

This is looking good (no, change that to fantastic)!  Quick question, in the grid format with images, are the images clickable or do you still have to click the text to enter the forum? If it's the former (clickable) fantastic, if it's the latter then that is counter intuitive as a natural reaction would be to click the image.

Many thanks for all of these amazing updates - 4.5 is looking to be something special.

The image is clickable. 🙂

How about to grab images from first post in the new modern topic list view in 2020?

Jackals Landing page does this very well.

And how about topic reputation in the new modern list? Its everywhere now, all news aggregators has it. IPS always lags behind current web about 5 years. In 5.0 we will see it, but now - no way...

Sorry my English.
