Managing successful online communities

4.3: Announcements

We have a very important announcement to make!

There are times where you need to get the attention of your visitors. You might be closed on certain days of the year, performing server maintenance (if you are consider our Cloud Plans, they're excellent) or running a competition.

Invision Community has always had an announcements feature baked in, but we felt it could be improved.

Okay, maybe this feature isn't as flashy as some of the others we're introducing in 4.3, but these useful features should make managing your community easier.

The new look announcement feature replaces the old widgets enabling you to display customisable announcements in any of the following locations;

  1. Top of the page
  2. Above the page content
  3. In the sidebar

The three new announcement locations

Each location has some slightly different features; the page top banner is dismissible by the member if they no longer want to see it, whereas the banner above the content and the sidebar announcements cannot be dismissed.

Most of the original customisable features are still available, including the ability to select which applications and pages show certain announcements and which member groups can see them. Combining this with the three new locations gives you much more flexibility for different types of announcements and we've also included the option to customise the color of the announcement.

New customisable options

The announcements have also been improved to contain more information. Rather than showing an unformatted snippet along side the title, announcements can now be tapped to open a modal showing any further details.

We hope you'll enjoy these useful improvements in Invision Community 4.3. Stay tuned for further announcements (pun intended)!

Looking good, Stu!

Will it work with custom templates? I've tried people's announcement plugins in the past and they, of course, have to hook into the global template ... and sites with heavy customisation don't necessarily use that (including your own :) ).

It should be fine, we've added it without making any changes to the global template, so it'll work out of the box for customers that are using custom/modified themes.

Currently links within the announcement are not clickable (in the announcement box) both on the front page and when clicked. Is this something that can or will be added. If I have a short message with the URL within it, I would find it convenient that users are able to click it.

I know you can click a link when view the whole message.

Can a link to a specific topic be placed inside the top of the page announcement and be clicked but not open a new window? Example

This is an announcement, for more information read more...

Link goes directly to topic in question, not opening a window

The announcement icon (font awesome) in the sidebar should be editable. Other communities, other design icons. The feature enhancement is nice, but the chosen symbol looks a bit oldschool... ;)

In the old widgets, they showed a small sample of the announcement text (which is one of the reasons that styling and link etc were stripped from it. What we've done for 4.3 is remove that preview and made all of the announcements show the titles only with the ability to open the rest of the information in a modal. The content of that formatted is fully rendered as you would expect.

You could change it if you want to, either by modifying the template or by using a CSS rule to target the icon tag. (CSS would be the safer way to do it).

Well I have to say thats not ideal, I'd rather have the entire announcement as a link which goes directly to the topic where it can be discussed further. (at the top of the page announcement at least) On a XF forum they have that, the red link goes to the topic and its also dismissable

If you want to link to topics, you can use a topic widget already. Announcement are not topics. They are just a message to the users, not the start of a discussion.

I really like the fact that announcements get some attention. I think though that there is some room for improvements:

  • Whether or not an announcement is dismissable should be an option.
  • More conditions would be nice, i.e. the ability to show announcements based on how many days have passed since registration or the last login, based on reputation points, based on whether or not the member has its birthday... (similar to the conditions you offer in the group promotions in the AdminCP).
I know that technically you can create group promotions first and then display announcements based on usergroups, but that seems to be a bit off.

Other than that: Can't wait to see/test it! :)

They can't be dismissed though so I've never bothered with them

I see.

Guess there could be two announcement types: “with content” works as now in 4.3. A new type “Link” would use an URL field instead and link to any URL. That could be a topic, a system page (“Read our new Terms of Service”) or even an external page (“Check out this offer from our sponsor”).

Sounds good. Not sure they still add such features for 4.3 though.

What happens in the case of a visitor dismissing an announcement and then the announcement being updated? Would they see the update?

Really great and valuable addition. It's nice to see IPS continuing to expand and improve. Phenomenal, really.

We actually came up with a similar idea during a discussion. We won't be adding it for 4.3 but it may be something that's introduced in a future version.

When announcements are dismissed, they'll be hidden for the user regardless of any edits made. You can always list the announcement in other places if it's really important since the 'above content' and 'sidebar' announcements cannot be dismissed by the user.

Very nice!!  When will 4.3 be ready?  This feature will be valuable for our site!

Mike

We're currently getting ready for public betas, we'll make an announcement when those are ready.
