Blogs - Best Practices

Featured Replies

I'm just getting started with the Blogs application. I've read the Blog docs in the IC Learning Resources.

I'm still not understanding the methodology behind the Blog Categories and permissions.

There are ACP / Blogs / Categories but there's no way to add Group permissions for those categories? What's the purpose of these Categories?

Then in those Blog Categories we create Blogs. But those do not have permissions either?

My goal is to have a Staff Blogs category and at least one Member Group Blog category, and without permissions there's no way to keep a forum member group with Blog permissions from posting in the Staff Blog category?

There's also a Select Entry Category when creating a blog post, but that has no relation to the actual Blog Categories? What's the purpose of that classification?

I'm confused 🤔

I wish there was a few Best Practices configuration examples for Blogs using different scenarios. Maybe a family tree style flowchart would help visualize an implementation. .

There are Blog categories, which would categorize different blogs. E.g. (Sorry, I think in terms of cars) If you had a car community could have a category for American Cars, European Cars, etc... Then a user could create a Blog in American Cars category called "Jim's General Motors'" or something which has its own categories of "Chevy", "Pontiac", etc... and they each of those categories have Blog entries in them.

The categories in Blogs aren't really a way to provide permissions but rather specification.

I created a separate member account in a different browser and then Blogged with that account. I understand more now.

The main ACP Blog Categories are similar to Forum Categories. Useful for creating spaces everyone can recognize and sort. Wish they had permissions though. 😏

The Entry Category is per-user and not shared across all blogs / members. So that's just organizing that the member can use on their own blog.

Member Blogs can be limited with Group permissions. Best practice might be to allow one blog per user. They can have many Entries in that blog.

Blogs have their own tab in each member's Profile page so it's easy copy a URL directly to a particular blog.

Seems to be a bug in the Manage Categories popup on the front end. The blue Add Category button is not labeled (Chrome, Firefox).

If you clear your cache in ACP -> Support, does it fix it?

Yes! Thx.

FYI - When I mouseover the Title text my pointer changes to a hand. No link though. Hmmm

If you click the word Title, it will put focus on the textbox so you can start typing.
