Our take on managing successful online communities

4.3: Paid club memberships, and other club improvements

We released news of Clubs just under a year ago for Invision Community 4.2 and it has been the best received feature to date.

Clubs opens up new ways to run your community by allowing members to create sub-communities away from the central forum area.

Since the feature was released, we've collated an immense amount of feedback on the feature. Here's what we're improving for Invision Community 4.3.

Paid Club Memberships

If you have Commerce installed on your community, 4.3 adds the ability for members to create paid clubs. Users wishing to join the club will be required to pay a membership fee (which can be one off or recurring) which will be paid to the club owner, minus any commission you want to keep for the site. You can choose which groups can create paid clubs.

Paid Club Settings

If enabled, the club directory will show the price for membership in each club.

Club directory with paid clubs

The process for joining works a little differently depending on the type of club...

  • For open clubs, the user will immediately be prompted to pay the joining fee. Once they have paid, they are added to the club as normal.
  • For closed clubs, the user will need to request to join as normal. Once they have been accepted to join the club, they will then be able to pay the membership fee, after which they'll be added to the club.
  • For private and read-only (a new type in 4.3, which we'll talk about below) users have to be invited to join the club
  • Public clubs have no membership, and so cannot be paid.

Paying for club membership

Club leaders can also waive the membership fee, allowing certain users to join the club for free.

Waiving renewal fees on an existing member

If a member fails to pay their renewal charge, they are moved into an "expired" state. The club leaders can see the status and renewal date for all members, and use the filter tools to just see active or expired members.

Club members management

Paying out membership fees works just as it does with paid files in Downloads. Users receive the amount as account credit. If enabled, they can then request a payout of this via PayPal or a manual payout method you want to use.

Club content throughout the community

Currently content in clubs is only visible within the club itself. In 4.3 a new setting allows you to show the content from clubs throughout the community - for example, if a club contains a forum, that forum can show in the main forum list.

 Screen Shot 2018-01-22 at 12.39.24.png

Club forums showing on main forum list

This is a single toggle: if enabled, all content from clubs that each user has joined will show throughout the community, appearing below the normal categories/etc in that application.

New Club Type: Read Only

In addition to Open, Closed, Private and Public, we have added a new club type in 4.3: read only. In a read only club, everyone can (without joining) view everything in the club, but cannot participate unless they are invited by a club leader.

Following

Users can now follow a club, and will then receive notifications about all new content in the club - the same as if they followed every content area in the club.

List View

In addition to the current grid layout of clubs, there is a new list-style.

Screen Shot 2018-01-22 at 12.52.16.png

Clubs List View

The admin can choose which views are available and what the default should be.

AdminCP Approval

You can now filter the list of clubs in the AdminCP to clubs requiring approval and approve clubs from within the AdminCP.

Screen Shot 2018-01-22 at 12.50.53.png

Deleting Content Areas

Club leaders can now delete content areas within their clubs. This can be useful if, for example, the leader added a club feature by mistake.

Content areas can only be removed if there is no content within it, or if you have granted club leaders the ability to delete content in their clubs (since they would be able to empty it).

Other Minor Tweaks

  • You can now set per-group the maximum number of clubs a member in that group can create.
  • A member invited to join a club can now delete the invitation if they do not want to accept it (rather than just ignoring it).

So, Admin can't decide which forums appear and which ones do not. It's all or nothing, all clubs a member has joint already or none, right ?

On the other hand, just a small doubt ...,  have you improved the block template in the system tab so that we can show specific clubs in the main body for example, below the "ad block" ?  and I mean a nice block template similar to the club main page and no that "simple" list of clubs that block displays when you add it to the forum section.

Superb update, thank you for these improvements! Nicely done!

I'd been holding back on enabling Clubs to one day bring in some possible revenue, so paid clubs is so welcome. You've clearly thought this out in terms of potential revenue for both site owners and members, great for member engagement and to give a little something back.

As many have said, Commerce just wasn't worth the outlay previously for just paid subscriptions only for many small communities.

Will there be any promotion available for Commerce (as 4.3 Clubs is bound to drive up demand!), will there be a more affordable 'Light version' of Commerce released supporting just paid subscriptions and Clubs or should we just buy now in preparation?

That would be even more great if clubs does supports Pages app

Definitely need to allow pages or at least a single page. Very helpful to have a greeting page that can explain the group, how to post, relevant links, etc.

Club improvements are nice.

This sounds like it will also apply to Gallery? i.e. you will see Club Gallery content at the bottom if you're in the Gallery main tab?

Oh yes, I hope Mark just forgot it to mention.

If not ... please add this. PLEASE. A page "tab" option.

Or just a tab "free site" (editor).

There has not been any changes to the clubs widget.

We're not planning a light version, no. The majority of Commerce's functionality, or at least it's most complicated stuff (the orders, payment gateways, managing customer data like billing addresses and stored cards, handling tax, etc.) is shared. The "storefront" is one of the less complicated parts of it.

 Oh i hoped for this so badly. As it is not such a big thing to do. Hopefully we will get this in 4.4 then.

Hello ! :)

- Is there a way to have some features added automatically when a membre creates a club ?

Most of my board's users are "normal" people who don't master computers and so clubs they created on my board were stopped at the creation step and were given up.

For instance : a member creates a club and a board is automatically added ?

Or perhaps a "guidance box", an assistant tool which would ask the member "Now that you created your club, do you want to add a forum ? a gallery ? etc. " and the member would check boxes to have them created or not ?

- Clubs and their content are invisible on a community index page... I read we will have the clubs' forums appearing on the index page ? Will there also be a sidebar block to show the clubs' content (not the list of clubs) as it exists already in the clubs' directory ?

- Most important of all for me : did you improve the club's description page ? Is it now possible to add images, format text, make paragraphs ?

Thank you ! :)

Thanks for listening to customers and adding new features; however, I am still confused on when I'd use clubs.  One of my sites has over 500k posts, and the members feel we have too many forums as it is.  They would prefer just one forum with all posts.  Clubs seems to make things even more spread out, no?

As for me, my board is about primary school education and my board's members are teachers, students and parents.

I use clubs for specific projects : creating a cursive font, for instance, or a private club only for a specific group of teachers.

Clubs gives members autonomy by allowing them to manage a mini-community dedicated to their specific project. Some members on my board created clubs to work with other students who live in the same area as them and taking the same exam (and not willing to share their tips and tricks with all my board's visitors).

Great improvements!

Will there also be a new block that allowes to only show specific clubs (chosen from a list of all clubs) that can be placed anywhere on the site in order to feature clubs?

On the club's landing page, will there be an option to pin/unpin clubs so we can decide to show specific clubs at the very top of the list/grid view?

Is there any reason why no Pages support for Clubs yet in 4.3?

A lot of people were hoping it would be included after it was slated to come in a future release so that Club owners could create a sort of Club homepage with basic content block widgets.

1.  Keep in mind that you can create a Custom Field for the club, where you can input information.  It's not very sexy; it's not formatted well at all; and it's ugly.  But you can at least input some additional information about the Club.

2.  I remember requesting this when Clubs first came out.  They really should have added hot zones for clubs, but I wasn't sure how they would allow club leaders access to the Block Manager.  This is probably more complicated to implement than what we think (but then again, as IPS likes to intone, that's not a client problem.)

3.  For the club homepage, I think IPS needs to realize that the Activity Stream looks sexy on first glance, but then ... it gets boring real fast.  It's not interactive.  It's not customizable.  It's not filterable.
