IP.Board 3.2.0: Search/VNC Interface Improvements

We've gradually been revealing aspects of the new IP.Board 3.2 front-end interface, and naturally there's much more to come.

In this entry I'd like to preview the new interface for the Search, View New Content and User Content views, since all three of these views essentially share the same interface elements. We previously covered the changes and improvements to View New Content, and these changes have been incorporated into the new interface.

As always, please note that screenshots are from development software, and are subject to change before the final release.

Overview

The biggest change is of course a brand new filter menu, to replace the myriad dropdown menus that we currently use. Content can be effortlessly filtered with single clicks - whether it's changing the app you're searching, the sub-section, or the time frame.

Search sorting

In addition to the main filter menu, search results also make use of a new filter bar to enable sorting and ordering (again replacing dropdown menus). This is an interface concept that you can expect to see more of in IP.Board 3.2.

Language

Non-English users will be pleased to know that we're now making use of IPSLib::getAppTitle() for tabs and titles in the search interfaces, so that the correct translation is always displayed.

We hope you like this brief preview of the new search interface! The changes we've shown here and elsewhere are a taste of the improvements we're making across the product to improve usability and aesthetics. There's plenty more to come, in our blog entries and public previews.

Feel free to comment on this blog entry below or, if you have feedback unrelated to this blog entry, start a new topic in our feedback forum. Be sure to check the What's New in IP.Board 3.2 topic for a running list of announced changes!

I'm not bothered too much about the layout - I don't mind how the preview looks - it's the results that are the key to search, and at the moment they're less than perfect, and VNC is ... TBH ... pants. I don't know anyone who really uses it much on my board because they find it so frustrating to use.So, for me, it's the search results and "new content" that will be the winner. If you can sort those two my members will be happy. Also, for us "Big Boards" will Sphinx be supported?Cheers,Shaun :D

We've already covered much of that: http://community.invisionpower.com/blog/1174/entry-5858-ipboard-320-view-new-content-and-topic-marking/

Nice but I would like to see some indication of what topics I have participated in when I view the the results. These are the ones that I want to view first.

In addition to this the "Other" filter should include the following"

"Topics started by me"
"Topics I have replied to"

or words to this effect.

Though I didn't mention it here, there's the "My Content" area too which shows exactly what you mention :)

Yup I'm aware of that however adding this to the new VNC seems pretty logical to me.

Ok a step forward i see it seems to be taking cues from Googles's "MORE" options

00000023.png

however there are a few CRITICAL things missing...

I want to see a few hundred characters from the thread body that is showing - the TOPIC or the REPLY

REPLYs should be prefaced with RE:
I want filter by TOPICS and REPLIES
If there are 15 posts for the same topic i want to see the RE: for all 15 replies as they came in, REGARDLESS OF FORUM
And wish to see who made the reply ( their photo) the original topic starter could be listed below...

I want to show TOPICS WITH NO REPLIES - A MUST FOR MODERATORS

I want to see indication if I participated in a thread
As mentioned already to SEE MY CONTENT!

For all that is good PLEASE Give up on the Past 24/ Past week / Past 2 Weeks / Past Month / Past 6 Months / Past Year - THIS IS ABSOLUTELY USELESS - except increase the record set - and increases the pagination for the records. - loosing your place should you change the scope.

AS I have stated before you need a DATE DRIVEN model - (Today / Yesterday) (Previous Day / Next Day) based on day or at the most weekly (This week / Last week)
The users can STEP BACK in time to see what was posted when.

Would like the forum name to be clickable to directly go to the forum. ( would prefer the forum to be in it's own column but that's just me)

The Unread / and Since last visit - i will reserve my remarks - as I have NEVER seen these options EVER work as intened on any fora.

Stephen, would you mind posting your reply as a topic in the suggestions forum? I like your ideas, but they're likely to be missed by the developers as a comment on an interface entry :) A topic can be easily tracked and other customers can jump in with feedback too. Thanks :)

Yup, I agree with almost everything Stephen says as well. These are excellent suggestions.

I like the date driven suggestion best. I travel away a lot so often want to catch up on things when I get back home or at the next motel. At the moment we have last 24 hours then it jumps out to a week. In most cases it's 1-3 days that I want to catch up with. Anything much over a week is pretty useless and users will likely use the search system instead.

loving the fact that the options for common search are clearly identifiable on the page (currently as a left hand column) This finally makes VNC a one stop shop for finding content. I've just polled my members on how they find topics and content and its currently a right mess. This will make life very easy from an admin and a member viewpoint

curious what about Blog Comments / Gallery Comments / Pages Comments/ that are not being copied over to a forum?

It would be nice read all the incoming stream of comments as well ( with the filters & features requested earlier )

Agree with Stephen regarding forum being in its own column, only recently had to edit a skin to use that layout as members on our site hated that the forum list was built into the topic info, meant finding posts in their section more of a chore, where as in its own column it made it easier for them to find the topics in the sections they wished to view.

I agree with marklcfc. That filter bar looks too complex to me. The most commonly used filters should be the handiest, while this bar requires study and interpretation on every single use.

(A lot of people won't understand what By Application means. That is tech jargon.)

Have you tried this with naive end users yet? That's the best way to determine how usable it is.

You don't need a fully functional system. You can do user testing with screenshots, or even drawings, or Acrobat, or Powerpoint, which permit definition of hotspots for clicking.

Please make the Links editable! There is no such thing as "Pages" on my forum, it's the Homepage, the core of my site. It would just create bafflement.
Also, please make us reaarrange them easily.

"Pages" (the content) should definitely be above all the others, then comes forums and blogs and... ... members. (from my priority-list)

Look at the blog entry. What do you see? Screenshots of a work in progress.
And what are you posting here? Feedback.

We know exactly how a software development cycle works, thanks :)

You can rename them in the ACP (in the Applications section). The order they're shown on the search pages is the order you have them in the ACP, so you can change that too :)

To everyone posting random feature suggestions for search, please use the appropriate feedback/suggestions forum to post your ideas.

This is a blog entry discussing some of the interface changes you can expect to see with the search system in 3.2. Posting feature suggestions as comments to such a blog entry is almost guaranteed to assure they will be lost and forgotten about, and not intentionally. Thanks!
