IP.Board 3.2.0: New Text Editor, Part II

I recently introduced the new text editor in 3.2.0. This new text editor brings a robust rich text editor coupled with custom BBCode and an auto-save feature.

Today, I wanted show some user interface and usability improvements we've made in this area.

Firstly, where space is tight or where you don't want to be overwhelmed with the text editor, it is shown 'minimised'. The screenshot below shows this minimised state and the editor looks just like a regular HTML text area that everyone is familiar with.

Upon clicking the text area to begin making your post, it'll expand into the full editor ready for use:

We've also gone ahead and added 'Ajax reply' and 'Ajax quoting'. This improves the responsiveness of IP.Board by removing the page reloads and gives it more of an 'app' feel by posting and updating the page instantly.

I've taken a short video of this in action. Please note that you are viewing an in-development feature so the final design is not set for both the board and the editor and also that I'm currently working in "development" mode with CKEditor which means that there is a slight pause as it loads. This will not be the case when we package it up for release.

We hope that you enjoy these enhancements to commonly used areas and that it makes a common task more enjoyable. Please do keep in mind that cosmetic style issues and such will be addressed in future blog entries.

Nice! ;)

How does app handles when someone posts something before you reply? This will be common case in busy topics.

There was a hook that did this(ajaxfy posts thingy), it was working in a way that when you reply, it checks if someone posted something before your post and after the last post you have opened and if there is, it will load that/those post/postss and show it/them with some cool blinking effect, and then it will slide down to your post. Or at least something like that, cant remember... :D

I've been looking forward to AJAX reply and quoting. I'm very pleased that we can look forward to this with the release of 3.2. Great work IPS, thanks for listening to your customers. Eagerly awaiting more blog entries!

Was going to say the same thing, so this would be very useful if it could be added.

If a new post is made when typing a reply, a message as a link could appear just above saying new posts have been made, then the user can choose to click that link to view the new posts should they wish to, they'd appear via ajax.

If you were a girl, I'd kiss you. But since you're not I'll just give you +1 rep and we'll call it quits at that, eh?!! (w00t)

Looks really good Matt and can't wait to get this into action on CycleChat - my members will love it (well, at least they will once they've stopped moaning about the "change" ... lol).

The cherry on top of the icing that is the ajax replying would be, as previously mentioned, the "since you started typing your reply ... these posts were made" feature. That would be fantastic and is something I've been constantly asked for over the years.

Will the editor be phased-in across all the IP apps or will they be updated to use the new editor when 3.2 comes out?

Cheers,
Shaun :D

@ CycleChat: Hey, haven't you read that man kisses are cool now?

One thing I just noticed in leaving this comment is that I click in the box and the text editor does open but the cursor is not visible and blinking. That is a bug since I don't know for sure the comment block is working. Not sure if what you are developing is what is in use here but something to look at.

We're still using the old editor. Not quite ready to upgrade here yet ;)

Not thrilled with this idea as I know some of these editors and this one have a bad habit of putting extra code in that you do not need or want in the post.

On the test site for this editor it does put extra code in. The editor in the current version of IPb does not put that extra code in there which is why I like it better.

To be honest I switched to ip.content to save me time as the editor was better.

I'm sure they're not going to just live with it having some issue like that, they'll either work with the vendor to fix that problem or fix it themselves.

so what's the point of having a reply AND multiquote buttons? Can't we just merge them together? besides they are so confusing to new members.

But it will be great to have the ability to partially quote a post.
