<p>
	Allowing your customers to find exactly what they need as fast as possible will no doubt increase sales.
</p>

<p>
	A good number of our customers use Commerce to sell physical items. Until now, it's always been a little tricky to set up the store to allow customers to drill down into specific items within the store.
</p>

<p>
	In Invision Community 4.4, the sidebar in the store now includes filter options to help customers find the product they're looking for.
</p>

<div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">

<p>
	Administrators can set up whatever filters they like for each product. In this video above, you can see we have set up filters for <strong>color</strong> and <strong>price</strong>.
</p>

<p>
	You can set these filters up in the <abbr title="Admin Control Panel">AdminCP</abbr> by simply specifying each possible option:

	<strong>Other Commerce Improvements</strong>
</p>

<p>
	In addition, we also have a few more features new to Commerce in 4.4:
</p>

<ul><li>
		There are new sidebar blocks for best selling products, latest products, product reviews and a featured product.
	</li>
	<li>
		When sending a bulk mail, you can target recipients by the total amount they have spent.
	</li>
	<li>
		Categories with no products in them are hidden automatically in the store.
	</li>
	<li>
		Notification emails sent to customers to let them know their purchase will expire soon (including if they will be automatically charged) have been improved to show more clearly what will happen.
	</li>
	<li>
		When viewing a customer page in the <abbr title="Admin Control Panel">AdminCP</abbr>, active purchases are separated from expired and cancelled purchases to make it easier to discern which are active.
	</li>
	<li>
		Custom field values are now included on printed invoices.
	</li>
	<li>
		When filtering support requests in the <abbr title="Admin Control Panel">AdminCP</abbr>, you can now choose "more than" or "less than" for all time-based filter options.
	</li>
	<li>
		When using stock actions to reply to support requests, the stock reply can be incorporated into the staff member's default reply content rather than overwriting it.
	</li>
	<li>
		Invoices in the <abbr title="Admin Control Panel">AdminCP</abbr> can now be filtered by status.

<p>
	This month, I thought I'd ask a trick question. "What is your favourite movie?"
</p>

<p>
	I fully expected to be told "but Matt, we work so hard on Invision Community, we don't have time to watch movies." just so I didn't have to complete this month's entry.
</p>

<p>
	But no. Apparently, most of our team have MULTIPLE favourites. Hmmm.<br><br>
	And here they are.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Jennifer</span><br>
	Favorite movies are a pain to choose because there are so many great (and greatly terrible) movies out there. So I'm going to choose a few that I just really adore and explain why.
</p>

<p>
	So the first one is "Halo: Forward Unto Dawn". I have never played a Halo game in my entire life. I just find the movie intriguing and smooth. It has an amazing pace and of course there are aliens. It's also one of those movies that I can just put on when I don't feel like watching anything else but I want to watch something. The replay value for me is amazing.
</p>

<p>
	The Next one is a psychological thriller called "Pandorum" this movie is a thriller about a man that wakes up in a broken space ship that was on its way to another world. The way it's put together is amazing, the story is twisted and it's just an amazing watch. It's something that I can easily say was a quick favorite from the first time I saw it.
</p>

<p>
	I can never forget the lovely "Dredd" in this list of my favorite movies. Muricer for the win! It has all the elements of a great Sci-Fi plus Karl Urban and Lena Headey. I win all around on this movie. Plus, it's even better in 3D with the Slo-mo drug.
</p>

<p>
	While I can list more I'm going to round off my answer with 2 Series movies. "Tremors" and "Sharknado". What most of you don't know about me is that I'm a sucker for horribly trashy horror movies ("Zombeavers" is another favorite with the same reason as these two series). Scantly clad women, screaming, monsters, corrupt people and lots of blood. There is no better thing to watch. I love a good day of Monster Movies and beer. The trashier the better.
</p>

</div>

<p>
	<br><span style="font-size:18px;">Marc</span><br>
	I think I will go for 3 different points in time for favourite movies. One from growing up, one which is a classic IMO, and one more recent that I've enjoyed.
</p>

<p>
	Growing up, it has to be 'Labyrinth' staring David Bowie. It's the first movie I ever watched at the cinema with my parents, and one I can still watch to this day. I'm very much guilty of singing along to every song, and I'm actually banned from watching it anywhere near my wife as I say every single word in the script a split second before they say it. I think its safe to say I have seen it a few times.
</p>

<p>
	A classic for me would be 'Schindlers list'. To me this is one of the best movies ever made, and while I'm sure it will have been greatly adapted for a movie audience, it also shows what many went through during WW2 which are not so common knowledge. A great movie for children to sit there and watch who don't know about it, as it gets them asking questions that all children should ask and learn from.
</p>

<p>
	For a more recent movie, I quite enjoyed 'Sully: Micracle on the Hudson'. I generally like movies by Tom Hanks anyway, but I did particularly enjoy this one.
</p>

<p>
	Bonus recent movie - Baby Driver I really enjoyed. Great movie, and the star somehow looks familiar <img alt=":wink:" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="//media.invisioncic.com/a319035/emoticons/wink.png" srcset="//media.invisioncic.com/a319035/emoticons/wink@2x.png 2x" title=":wink:" width="20" loading="lazy"> I'm sure 'ed' will find a suitable image to illustrate.

	<span style="font-size:18px;">Brandon</span><br>
	This is a fairly challenging question to answer, as someone who watches a lot of movies. I own somewhere around 1500 DVDs/BluRays, though in recent years I've been buying fewer and renting more. A few of my top movies would include (in no particular order)...<br>
	1. The Matrix Series - while I've overplayed the series at this point, the story was amazing at the time and it had so many allegories to real life that were fun to think about even when you were done watching.<br>
	2. Doom - it was campy and silly overall, but a lot of fun. Karl Urban and The Rock together was a cool mix.<br>
	3. The One - I have always been a fan of Jet Li, but when this came out I thought the cinematography was awesome. The way they did the slow-mo movements was neat, and the story was quite unique. Plus, Jason Statham is awesome, and he was a supporting role instead of a lead.
</p>

	The Beatles’ “Help!” has got to be my favorite movie due to the special place it holds with my family. My sister growing up was a huge Beatles fan and being the younger sibling, it kind of got forced on me but grew to be a fan as well. This movie, in my opinion, was my great due to the music (great album) and very dry comedy that is hilarious.  Think I can recite each line of the movie as I’ve seen it too many times. It definitely isn't a movie set out to win any acting awards but if you haven’t seen it and like the Beatles, I would recommend it.

	<br><span style="font-size:18px;">Mark H</span><br>
	Like the others, I can’t pick just one movie.
</p>

<p>
	For documentaries, that would be “The Longest Day”, the story of the Jun 6, 1944, allied invasion of Normandy, with perspectives from all sides of the conflict. The book by Cornelius Ryan on which it’s based is a very long read, but gripping and factual, and this movie is one of the few that actually did justice to the book from which it was derived. Anyone with a passion for history should both see the movie and read the book.<br>
	The runner-up in this category would be “Saving Private Ryan”, although it did take liberties with historical fact.
</p>

<p>
	In the Sci-Fi category, the original “Blade Runner”. The city in which it is set was once described as “a cross between Hell and Hong Kong on a bad day”, and that’s disturbingly accurate. It’s a warning about the future of humanity if we do not curb our use of the planet’s natural resources, and do not carefully overwatch technology in the hands of corporations driven only by profit and without any societal morals.<br>
	Two close runner-ups in this category would be the film “Soylent Green”, another cautionary tale that is similar to Blade Runner in its warning about the future of humanity, and “2001: A Space Odyssey”, a speculative tale about our own evolution and our future.
</p>

<p>
	For other general fiction it would be “The Silence Of The Lambs”. Few movies have creeped me out like this one did. Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of Hannibal Lecter was truly chilling,<br>
	Two runner-ups would be the mini-series “Lonesome Dove”, based on the books by Larry McMurtry, a fictional work about the frontier Wild West, but could easily be true, and “The Thorn Birds”, a similar genre set in Australia and based on the book by Colleen McCullough.
</p>

<p>
	It's very easy to focus on a single metric to gauge the success of your community.
</p>

<p>
	It's very common for community owners to look at page hits and determine if their SEO and marketing efforts have paid off.
</p>

<p>
	Getting traffic to your site is only half the equation though. The most valuable metric is how many casual visitors you're converting to engaged members.
</p>

<p>
	Invision Community already makes it easy for guests to sign up using external services such as Facebook, Twitter and Google.
</p>

<p>
	However, there has to be a conscious decision to click that sign-up button. For some, this may be a barrier too many.
</p>

<p>
	Invision Community 4.4 reduces this barrier by allowing guests to create a post to a topic they want to engage with.
</p>

<p>
	Once they have posted, they are asked to simply complete their registration. They are more likely to do this now they have invested in your community.
</p>

<p>
	This will be incredibly valuable when you consider how much traffic a forum receives from inbound Google searches. With Post Before Registering, you'll increase your chances of turning that inbound lead into a registered member contributing to your site.
</p>

<p>
	Let me take you through the feature and show you how it works.
</p>

<p>
	When browsing the community guests will see the ability to submit a post, with an explanation that they can post now and complete registration later. The only thing they have to provide in addition to their post is an email address.
</p>

<div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">

<p>
	After submitting the post, the post will not be visible to any user, but the user will immediately be redirected to the registration form with an explanation to complete the registration. The email address they provided will already be filled in.

	<strong>Some Notes</strong>
</p>

<ul><li>
		Invision Community already has a feature that allows guests to post as guests without registration if granted permission. That feature has not been removed and so if you already allow guests to post, the behaviour will not change. This new feature is only available when a guest can't post in a given area, but a member would be able to. The entire feature can also be turned off if undesired.
	</li>
	<li>
		If the area the guest is posting in requires moderator approval, or newly registered members require approval of new posts, the post will enter the moderation queue as normal once their account has been created.
	</li>
	<li>
		Third party applications will require minor updates to support this feature.
	</li>
</ul><p>
	Once your casual visitor has invested time in your community by crafting a post, they are much more likely to finish the registration to get it posted. If you have set up external log in methods, then registration only takes a few more clicks.
</p>

	Who remembers the earlier days of the internet? Back when you popped your logo at the top left of your site and you were largely done?
</p>

<p>
	Invision Community has continually developed to account for all the new services that have been built during our 16 years.
</p>

<p>
	We now have social media sharing images, favicons and more to consider.
</p>

<p>
	Invision Community 4.4 also adds mobile application icons, Safari mask icons and data for an application manifest. Handling of these logos and icons was a prime candidate for improvement in 4.4.

You can still upload a logo image per-theme (which shows in the header area), but the rest of the options have now been relocated to a new area: <strong>Customization &gt; Appearance &gt; Icons &amp; Logos</strong>.

Uploading a single image will result in several different copies of the image (in different dimensions) being generated, and mobile devices will automatically choose the best option from the list as needed.
	</p>

	<div>
		<h4 class="cDocs_subSubTitle">
			<span style="font-size:18px;">Safari mask icon</span>

	</div>

	<p>
		You can also now upload a Safari Mask icon, which is used to represent your website in certain areas on Apple computers (such as on the "touchbar" of certain keyboards). This image must be an SVG image with a transparent background, and all vectors must be 100% black.
	</p>

	<p>
		Additionally, you can specify the mask color which is used to offset your image when necessary (e.g. to represent it as "selected" or "active").
	</p>

	<div>
		<h4 class="cDocs_subSubTitle">
			<span style="font-size:18px;">Application manifest</span>

	</div>

	<p>
		In order for devices to support the application icons that you upload, a file known as a <a href="https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Manifest" rel="external nofollow">web manifest</a> must be generated and delivered to the browser. This now happens automatically, using details and icons specified in the <abbr title="Admin Control Panel">AdminCP</abbr>. Certain details, however, can be configured explicitly from the Icons &amp; Logos page:
	</p>

	<ul><li>
			Short name<br>
			This is a short name to represent your site in areas with limited screen space, such as below your application icon on a mobile phone home screen.
		</li>
		<li>
			Site name<br>
			This is the name of the site. The "Website name" setting is automatically used if you do not explicitly override it when configuring the manifest.
		</li>
		<li>
			Description<br>
			A short description of your site
		</li>
		<li>
			Theme color<br>
			You can choose a (single) color to represent the general theme of the site. This color may be used by devices in areas such as the address bar background.
		</li>
		<li>
			Background color<br>
			You can also choose a (single) color to use as the background color for your site when the application is launched from a shortcut saved to the user's device home screen.
		</li>
		<li>
			Display mode<br>
			Finally, you can specify the display mode your site should launch in.
		</li>
	</ul><p>
		For our more astute designers and developers, you may have already realized that generating the manifest file lays the groundwork for future <a href="https://developers.google.com/web/progressive-web-apps/" rel="external nofollow">PWA (Progressive Web App)</a> development and support. Additionally, some Android devices will <em>automatically</em> prompt users to add your website to their home screen now that a manifest file is generated by the site.
	</p>

	<p>
		Oh, and for the sake of completeness, we also generate the special <a href="https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/internet-explorer/ie-developer/platform-apis/dn320426(v=vs.85)" rel="external nofollow">browserconfig.xml</a> file that Microsoft products (including Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, X-Box, and Microsoft-based mobile devices) look for when pinning sites and generating live tiles. There are no additional configuration options for this file - everything is automatically generated from the aforementioned options.

You can more easily fine-tune the "little things" that help paint a complete picture of your web presence, and the groundwork has been laid for bigger and better things in the future as standardization and adoption of PWA functionality improves.

<p>
	Communication has come a long way since those very early humans grunted at each other to determine if they wanted more mammoth for lunch.
</p>

<p>
	The course of human history has seen cave paintings, hieroglyphics, the written word, emoji and now GIFs.
</p>

<p>
	GIFs have been around since the dawn of the internet. Many websites proudly displayed a 'man at work' animated GIF when they were under construction.
</p>

<p>
	Now, GIFs are now mostly used to express complex thoughts and emotions by showing a short animation.
</p>

<div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">

</div>

<p>
	Now your members can reply with the majesty of animation.
</p>

<p>
	Of course, GIFs won't replace real and meaningful conversation, but they are a fun way to express yourself quickly and encourage more engagement.
</p>

<p>
	The GIPHY functionality is enabled via the 'Community Enhancements' page in the Admin CP.

	It's not often that we get to blow our own trumpets. That's not just because we don't own trumpets, but also because we like to keep our heads down and focused on producing fantastic software <span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><span style="font-size:12px;">[Ironic trumpet blowing - Editor]</span></span>.
</p>

<p>
	Many of our team also run their own Invision Communities.
</p>

<p>
	So this month, we asked:
</p>

<p>
	What is your favourite Invision Community feature?<br><br>
	Here's what we said.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;">Brandon</span><br>
	My favorite feature would be Pages 'databases' feature. You can quickly and easily create databases of content, and then you can adjust the templates to make those databases display in a more relevant manner for the type of content you are working with, all without having to modify any code. On my wife's real estate website, I have used Pages to create databases for hosting leads, property listings, closings, and realtor contacts. Being a developer I've further enhanced some of those areas with plugins, but even right out of the box the system is powerful enough to do quite a lot with just a little bit of configuring and templating.
</p>

<div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">
	<p>

	<p class="cFramedImage_option">

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;">Jennifer</span><br>
	So, I love Invision Community. I've loved it for ages and it's hard to pick just one favorite feature. I'm going to say that Clubs and Pages are probably my top two favorite things in the whole wide world on Invision Community.
</p>

<p>
	For clubs, it allows your members to create special interest groups/forums/galleries/etc without having to do all of that yourself. It makes pulling together people of similar interests really easy and it makes it to where you don't have to manage "as much" of the responsibility for having a billion forums or groups. I also find it's a great way to get people excited and talking about things that they love which spreads positivity and happiness, which I love as an administrator.
</p>

<p>
	For Pages! There is so much! From Databases that you can super customize to blocks! There is so little I can't do with Pages!! I've made a super custom link directory (<a href="https://rpginitiative.com/directory/" rel="external nofollow">https://rpginitiative.com/directory/</a>), a directory of searchable people (<a href="https://rpginitiative.com/pb-directory/" rel="external nofollow">https://rpginitiative.com/pb-directory/</a>) and one of my favorites a copy and paste code directory (<a href="https://rpginitiative.com/codex/" rel="external nofollow">https://rpginitiative.com/codex/</a>). They all are unique in look and feel and all have different purposes but they fill them so well. I of course have a basic Guides listing (<a href="https://rpginitiative.com/guides/" rel="external nofollow">https://rpginitiative.com/guides/</a>) but I don't think it's nearly as cool. Pages gives me a sense of empowerment on my community. It gives me the ability to create content that is special to my site and doesn't have to be cookie cutter in any way.
</p>

<p>
	Honestly, the whole suite always makes me happy because I get the community I want out of it and to me that is always the best and most special thing about Invision Community. <span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><span style="font-size:12px;">[This is the best answer - Editor]</span></span>
</p>

<div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">

	</p>
</div>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;">Mark H</span><br>
	Given my forum’s niche, amateur pyrotechnics <span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><span style="font-size:12px;">[Must be nicer to Mark - Editor]</span></span>, my favorite feature would be the Gallery. You can <em>describe</em> a pyrotechnic shell, effect, build process, etc, with as many pages of text as you wish, but photographs or videos are truly worth 1000 words. While our Gallery isn’t the largest one around, it does contains a large number of items that our members have contributed to showcase their work, some of which are quite impressive.
</p>

<div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">
	<p>

		Mark's last day at Invision Community

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;">Matt</span><br>
	I've given this a lot of thought <span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><span style="font-size:12px;">[Makes a change - Editor]</span></span>. There are several contenders, Pages (because I wrote it), Social Promotion (because I wrote that too), Commerce (I did not write this) and Gallery. All deserve to be picked on their own merits.<br><br>
	I decided to go with the <a href="https://invisioncommunity.com/news/product-updates/new-complete-your-profile-r1029/" rel="">profile completion system</a>. It's not a massive feature, and it's not the most exciting feature but it does its one job very well.<br><br>
	It helps reduce overwhelm when registering. It's critical to make the transition from guest to member as frictionless as possible, and having a dozen custom profile fields to complete is a good way to put people off.
</p>

<p>
	The profile completion system allows you defer data collection after registering, which reduces the barrier.<br><br><span style="font-size:16px;">Mark W</span><br>
	The auto-upgrader. When I first started at Invision Community one of my responsibilities was doing upgrades - often from 2.x to 3.x at the time - hours and hours of uploading files by FTP (sometimes painfully slowly) and clicking the upgrader, over and over again. I'm glad those days are behind us!<br>
	I think it was quite a good technical achievement too. The system knows what version you're coming from, what apps you have installed and only downloads the files you need. It knows if it needs to ask you for FTP access or if it can just write the files. Recently we made it so it knows if your themes are going to be compatible with the new version and warns you before you upgrade if they might not be.<br>
	Perhaps most significantly for me though is the backend behind it. Releasing an update used to be a bit of a nightmare (we had to build zip files ourselves!) - now I just tag the release in our git repo and everything magically figures itself out <font color="#7f8c8d"><span style="font-size:12px;">[Only if following </span></font><font color="#7f8c8d" face="-apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, Segoe UI, Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, Apple Color Emoji, Segoe UI Emoji, Segoe UI Symbol"><span style="font-size:12px;"><b>instructions</b></span></font><font color="#7f8c8d"><span style="font-size:12px;"> to the letter - Editor]</span></font>. It still delights me every time I do it.
</p>

<div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">
	<p>

	For me it has to be the block manager. The block manager makes it was so easy to set up the basic structure of your site. And it's hard to believe we used to disable hooks to remove an item, or even comment them out in some cases. Adding something like a list of new posts was something you would need a 3rd party plugin to achieve, and adding a simple bit of text is something you would have likely done in your theme. This brought a large amount of flexibility for users that wouldn't have previous had the capability to make some of these changes, and generally just made life easier for others.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;">Daniel</span><br>
	Pages App because of blocks and databases.<br>
	I have all kind of custom databases which I use daily to organise my work (Linklists, Knowledge Bases, Documentation) It saves one a lot of time and makes coding own apps quite unnecessary in most cases.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;">Ryan</span><br>
	Okay, I think I've finally decided that Reactions is my favorite feature. It's really cool to see how clients implement the feature on their own sites with different reaction types. Also, I wrote the backend and it was probably one of my favorite things I've done in the software.
</p>

<p>
	Do you recall that scene in Harry Potter where young Harry is sitting in his Uncle’s living room when hundreds of letters from Hogwarts burst through the fireplace, filling the room?
</p>

<p>
	Sometimes, when you log into the administrator’s control panel, it can feel a bit like that.
</p>

<p>
	As the administration control panel has evolved, there has been more of a need to display notifications, alerts and warnings to the administrators.
</p>

<p>
	There are several things which may require an administrator's attention which may show a notice on the <abbr title="Admin Control Panel">AdminCP</abbr> dashboard, a banner on the community, or send an email. For example:
</p>

<ul><li>
		When a new version of Invision Community is released.
	</li>
	<li>
		A new member registers and requires administrator validation.
	</li>
	<li>
		A configuration issue is detected, for example if dangerous PHP functions are enabled on the server.
	</li>
	<li>
		There are items Commerce which require manual action, such as transactions pending manual approval or items to be shipped.
	</li>
</ul><p>
	Up until now, each such area would manage how these notifications show and are sent independently. In 4.4 we have introduced a new section of the <abbr title="Admin Control Panel">AdminCP</abbr> which shows all things which require administrator attention in one place, easily accessible from any <abbr title="Admin Control Panel">AdminCP</abbr> page.

	While the best approach is to take the appropriate action (which will automatically dismiss the notification) so you always have an empty Notification Center, most notification types can be hidden, either temporarily on a per-notification basis by clicking the cross in the top-right, or administrators can hide all notifications of a certain type from their individual settings. <p>
	This month, we ask the team the age-old question: If you won a million dollars (or denomination of your choice), how would you spend it?
</p>

<p>
	The question was almost guaranteed to bring a raft of hilarious replies that showcase our amazing humour and wit.<br><br>
	Once again, we fall short and instead worry about taxation and retirement.<br><br>
	You can't give it away these days.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;">Marc S</span><br>
	I couldn't decide on whether to answer this with what I would 'like' to do with it, or what I would actually do with it, so figured I would answer both. <span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><span style="font-size:12px;">[So you just upgraded to $2,000,000? geez - Editor]</span></span>
</p>

<p>
	If it was just what I would like to do with it, then I would probably follow the F1 season around the globe for a few years until I got bored. I'm very much into the sport, and with the locations, it would make for some great destinations to visit in between the races.
</p>

<p>
	What I would actually do is pay off my mortgage, buy another 3 reasonably priced houses to rent out to others, and live off the investment. Given I would then have a constant income without doing much, I would then try my hand at starting a business. Not entirely sure what that business would be to be honest <span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><span style="font-size:12px;">[How to understand people with strong accents? - Editor]</span></span>, but I'm not the kind of person who would be able to just retire, without it driving me to insanity.

There are a lot of places I'd like to see in the world still and travelling is expensive.<br><br>
	I’d like to visit some of the top touristy spots in South America, like Rio, Galapagos islands, Peru, Machu Picchu, etc. I’d like to see Australia, Japan, China, Alaska, the northern lights in the Arctic, and I would like to make it back to Europe at some point, particularly to see more of Italy and visit Greece.

The remainder I'd split between savings and stock market investment.<br><br><span style="font-size:16px;">Mark H</span><br>
	A million dollars….. well, the government takes about 1/3 of that first off, so after taxes you get ~ $650,000. With that I’d pay off the house and credit card, buy a reliable vehicle, then the rest goes in the bank. Would not have enough to retire, even at my age. <span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><span style="font-size:12px;">[It wouldn't last 2 years? - Editor] </span></span>But it would eventually make retirement easier.

	In between complaining about the temperature of the United Kingdom, a hot topic in staff chat was what jobs we've done in the past, and which jobs we'd be terrible at.
</p>

<p>
	Mark said that Matt would be terrible at being a software engineer. Once all the laughter and clearing desks and leaving the building immediately had finished, we settled on these answers.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Jennifer</span><br>
	I'd be a terrible runway model. For most of my life I've had the height and the general look of a decent runway model (even like people staring at me) however I am terrible at it.

	I get really nervous in front of large crowds of people, wobbly knees and everything. My mum does costume design and has used me as her model a few times and that whole "stand at the end of the runway for a few seconds and pose thing"... Nope. Stood there, turned around and walked back.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Marc</span><br>
	I think the job I would be terrible at would be 'Handy Man'.
</p>

<p>
	Picked this rather than just saying a joiner/carpenter, plumber etc, as it encompasses more areas of complete ineptitude. My DIY skills are legendary, but for all the wrong reasons. Whilst I'm actually attempting to learn how to do things myself more lately, I have had a history of doing things incorrectly. I am that guy who has 8 pieces left after putting together flatpack furniture, creates swimming pools whilst fixing a tap, and don't even ask me to put a hole in a wall as I can do so with dramatic effect. <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">[Should have shared the picture of your workbench - Editor]</span></span>
</p>

<p>
	I think the one which springs to mind, which most would find simple, would be putting up a shelf. I put up a DVD shelf above my head which was a fair weight. This lasted 1 week before falling off the wall on to my head which was underneath it. <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">[That explains a lot - Editor]</span></span> Not a problem, because with my 'expert' DIY skills I put it back on the wall with 8 inch screws and to ensure it didnt come down again I covered the wall facing side with extremely strong glue. 3 years later when my wife wanted this taking down to decorate, I took it down along with half of the wall behind it. This was the point where the decorator was called to fix my mistakes.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:18px;">Brandon</span><br>
	I couldn't be President (or any major political position for that matter). I'm a very middle-of-the-road people pleaser type of person usually, and I could never handle having to make important decisions that affect everyone <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">[like in git? - Editor]</span></span>, especially with half of everyone agreeing with me and half of everyone thinking it was the worst idea ever. As much as people like to criticize those in power and feel like they have all the answers, I know it's just not that easy and I would never want to be in their position.

Back in 2008, I was a factory worker for a paving company, where I packaged pavement crack sealant at approximately 160 degrees Fahrenheit, in addition to various other types of sealant (for driveways, parking lots, etc.). It was a lot of heavy lifting, and because the material was so hot, I had to wear heavy long sleeve shirts in a factory that hit approximately 120 degrees each day. I lasted about four months.

	Here's what's on the team's bookshelves now.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;">Marc S</span><br>
	I go through a lot of books, usually audiobooks rather than actual books (I read enough online to last anyone a lifetime). I tend to go through a lot of factual books, rather than fiction. In the past week I've listened to:
</p>

<ul><li>
		What if? Serious Scientific answers to absurd hypothetical questions - Randall Muroe
	</li>
	<li>
		A short history of nearly everything - Bill Bryson
	</li>
	<li>
		At home - Bill Bryson
	</li>
	<li>
		How to land an A330 Airbus - James May
	</li>
</ul><p>
	I haven't read any fiction for quite a while now, but if I was to pick any set of books as being my favourite, it would be Kelley Armstrongs Women of the otherworld series.

	Audiobooks tend to be factual, whereas actual books tend to be fiction. I just feel there is more imagination involved when you actually read something that's fiction <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">[Are you talking about support tickets here? - Editor]</span></span>.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;">Mark W</span><br>
	The last book I read probably won't interest many (if you're curious though, it was "Milarepa and the Art of Discipleship" - a commentary on some of the stories about an 11th century Tibetan yogi) <font color="#7f8c8d"><span style="font-size:12px;">[Yep, we are now less interested</span></font><font color="#7f8c8d"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor] </span></font>but the last fiction book I read was 1984 which I'd actually never read before and found it really fascinating - still totally relevant today and absolutely something everyone should read, especially geeks like us.
</p>

<p>
	I read quite a lot of non-fiction, especially related to meditation and Buddhism - it's hard to pick a favourite but the book I probably refer to most and recommend most widely to anyone who might be interested is "Buddhist Meditation" by Kamalashila <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">[How does it end? - Editor]</span></span>.

	I love to read. I'm old enough to remember the days when we made books from a material called paper. These books were quite thick and took up a lot of room. <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">[lol slow down grandpa - Editor] </span></span>These days I stick to the Kindle and Audible stores. I especially like Audible. It enables me to listen to books when I'm working around the house, or out and about dropping my son off at his clubs.
</p>

<p>
	My all time favourite book is probably "The Road" by Cormack McCarthy. It's a dsytopian novel, which is a genre I enjoy. I also enjoy Stephen King's work. "The Stand" is of course one of his best. I quite enjoyed the Mercedes Killer series too.
</p>

<p>
	I'm a huge fan of the Jack Reacher series of novels. The quality can vary a little, but Jack Reacher is a great creation and I admire Child's writing style. He tends to just sit down once a year and start working on a new novel. He doesn't often plan out plots and structures, he tends to write and see where it takes him <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">[Bit like this blog - Editor]</span></span>.

	I don't have an all-time favorite "book" (singular), I read series of them. I'd say the first 6 Dune books are my favorite series.

<ul><li>
		Dune (1965)
	</li>
	<li>
		Dune Messiah (1969)
	</li>
	<li>
		Children of Dune (1976)

		God Emperor of Dune (1981)

	<li>
		Heretics of Dune (1984)
	</li>
	<li>
		Chapterhouse: Dune (1985)
	</li>
</ul><p>
	After that it would be series by Robert Jordan, "The Wheel of Time". There are 15 books in total, but I've only read the first 12 written entirely by Jordan, not the prequel or the 2 that had to be finished by Brandon Sanderson after Jordan's death.

<ul><li>
		The Eye of the World    (1990)

	After that it would be the original Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov. I've not read the 3 related books Asimov added to the series after the original 3. That's on my "to do" list.

	I'm sure I'll think of more which I've forgotten <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">[Happens to us all eventually - Editor]</span></span>, but I am not reading any book now, nor have I within the last several years. Have no time to do so.

I'm currently working through a Late 2014 iMac Retina 5k, and apparently I'm one of the few that doesn't have any external monitors (I used to, but I find them cumbersome most of the time, so I took them down <span style="color:#bdc3c7;"><span style="font-size:12px;">[Were you holding them up yourself? -Ed]</span></span>). When working remotely, I use a 2011 13" MacBook Pro.

	My favorite thing, though, is the "poster" I have on the right - my father gave it to me for my thirtieth birthday this year, and it's actually a sheet of uncut one dollar bills (funnily enough, though, there are actually 32 rather than 30).

<p>
	Unless you've been living under a rock, or forgot to opt-in to the memo, GDPR is just around the corner.
</p>

<p>
	Last week we wrote a blog answering your <a href="https://invisioncommunity.com/news/community-management/your-gdpr-questions-answered-r1086/?page=3" rel="">questions on becoming GDPR compliant</a> with Invision Community.
</p>

<p>
	We took away a few good points from that discussion and have the following updates coming up for Invision Community 4.3.3 due early next week.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:20px;">Downloading Personal Data</span><br>
	Invision Community already has a method of downloading member data via the member export feature that produces a CSV.
</p>

<p>
	However, we wanted Invision Community to be more helpful, so we've added a feature that downloads personal data (such as name, email address, known IP addresses, known devices, opt in details and customer data from Nexus if you're using that) in a handy XML format which is very portable and machine readable.
</p>

<div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">

<p>
	<span style="font-size:20px;">Pruning IP Addresses</span><br>
	While there is much debate about whether IP addresses are personal information or not, a good number of our customers requested a way to remove IP addresses from older content.
</p>

<p>
	There are legitimate reasons to store IP addresses for purchase transactions (so fraud can be detected), for security logs (to prevent hackers gaining access) and to prevent spammers registering. However, under the bullet point of not storing information for longer than is required, we have added this feature to remove IP addresses from posted content (reviews, comments, posts, personal messages, etc) after a threshold.<br><br>
	The default is 'Never', so don't worry. Post upgrade you won't see IP addresses removed unless you enter a value.

<p>
	<span style="font-size:20px;">Deleting Members</span><br>
	Invision Community has always had a way to delete a member and retain their content under a "Guest" name.<br>
	We've cleaned this up in 4.3.3. When you delete a member, but want to retain their content, you are offered an option to anonymise this. Choosing this option attributes all posted content to 'Guest' and removes any stored IP addresses.

	For most of us, at some point in our lives we've been told we look like someone famous. Maybe it's an actor from a favourite movie, or a member of a popular band.
</p>

<p>
	This has certainly come up a few times among the team in chat. We often joke about our more famous doppelgängers. We've often wondered who'd play us in the movie version of Invision Community. I'm holding out for Ryan Reynolds <span style="color:#7f8c8d;"><span style="font-size:12px;">[Keep dreaming - Editor]</span></span>.

<p>
	Invision Community has been going strong for over sixteen years now. Many of those who work for us were customers first before they signed away their souls and became staff. This month, we part the mists of time and ask:
</p>

<p>
	<strong>How did you first come across Invision Community?</strong>
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Andy </strong></span><span style="font-size:12px;">(Developer and man of mystery)</span><br>
	Way back in 1998 I was involved with an online investment club in the UK <span style="color:#999999;"><span style="font-size:12px;">(of course you were - Editor)</span></span> and we set up a directory of national share clubs with a threaded “bulletin board”. This was based on a freely available perl script (as everything was back then <span style="color:#999999;"><span style="font-size:12px;">(did they claim it would always be free? - Editor)</span></span>) but it just wasn’t up to the job. This was my first exposure to writing web based software as I started customising it for our needs. Soon after, we switched to UBB which moved away from messy layouts and to a more structured forum, topic, post experience. With the release in 2004 of Invision Community 1.3 we switched again and I’ve been working with Invision Community software ever since <span style="color:#999999;"><span style="font-size:12px;">(and you had such a promising life planned out - Editor)</span></span>.
</p>

<p>
	Around the same time the investment club moved to Invision Community, I also started up two other sites, one for modified cars which was an extremely popular niche at the time and one for my home town of Bedlington which is still running to this date. When developing for Invision Community I find it very useful to have that historical experience and real world insight. A lot of my input when we discuss new features as a team comes as a direct result of this first hand experience.

	</p>
</div>

<p>
	<strong><span style="font-size:16px;">Marc </span></strong><span style="font-size:12px;">(Support and fan of bouncy castles)</span><br>
	My first real experience trying to set up forums/communities for myself was somewhere around 2000 <span style="color:#999999;"><span style="font-size:12px;">(lol slow down grandpa - Editor)</span></span>. Me and a few friends used to host gaming servers for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and wanted something for storing stats on, so I set up UBB which I remember thinking was really cool at the time. I never really did much with it other than setting it up for people to use, and remember at the time backing things up on a 1mb hard drive (can't even fit a picture on that these days <span style="color:#999999;"><span style="font-size:12px;">(need a push on that rocking chair? - Editor)</span></span>).<br><br>
	Over the years, I ran a few more sites and the software at some point became vBulletin (cant recall when, but just seemed to happen) which I ran through version 2 and late into version 3. At that point I was starting to add things for myself, usually learning from other peoples "FIND abc, AFTER ADD, xyz" which is how we all used to add our own modifications at the time. The thought of an upgrade at the time, I know used to make me cringe.
</p>

<p>
	At some point during vBulletin 4 release, I was becoming a little disillusioned with the whole community software scene in general <span style="color:#999999;"><span style="font-size:12px;">(other disappointing platforms are available - Editor)</span></span>, and hadn't really used Invision Community before, but ended up using that for a site for my wife.
</p>

<p>
	I was using Invision Community more and more. Purely because it was the site that was most active at the time. This led me to becoming very interested in the new Invision Community 4 release, and was becoming a bit of an social addict on the alpha forum that was released, helping out people who weren't sure of things, and generally asking questions. It was around this point I was asked to join the team here at Invision. And you guys have had to put up with me ever since! My sincere apologies for that. <span style="color:#999999;"><span style="font-size:12px;">(apology accepted - Editor)</span></span>
</p>

<p>
	<strong><span style="font-size:16px;">Mark H </span></strong><span style="font-size:12px;">(Support and keeper of Dropbox)</span><br>
	The internet was in its infancy in 1985 <span style="color:#999999;"><span style="font-size:12px;">(and there goes 80% of our readers - Editor)</span></span>, and I was using BBS's on a dial-up 1200 baud modem. In 1986 I took over a BBS from a friend, running it on a 2400 baud modem and single phone line. It was just a few years later that I got my first look at the real "Internet", using Netscape and now a 9600 baud modem <span style="color:#999999;"><span style="font-size:12px;">(we just lost another 10% - Editor)</span></span>. At some point I discovered online communities, then only "Forums" with perhaps photo gallery software similar to Coppermine.
</p>

<p>
	My focus was gaming at the time, so I gravitated to forums for such things as (like Marc) Castle Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, and the first RPG-type text-based games.  I also joined a number of MUD's <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(multiplayer </span></font><font color="#999999" face="helvetica neue, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><span style="font-size:12px;">real time worlds</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>, and am a (now retired) staff member of the MUD, Ancient Anguish.
</p>

<p>
	I've seen the progression of technology and software which, today, we take for granted. But back then if someone had told me where we would be today, <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(oh boy, here we go</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor) </span></font>I'd have been...... skeptical. Over the years, I've used a verity of "forum software" but well over a decade ago started using Invision Community version 1.3a. Today I am a partner with another person running a site using Invision Community software, and it's the highest-ranking result at Google for its (admittedly niche) speciality.
</p>

<p>
	Since I was using Invision Community, having purchased it at version 2.3, and given that background, it seemed a natural progression to join Invision Community as an employee when the opportunity arose, and I have never looked back! <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(must be dangerous when reversing</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Jennifer </strong></span><span style="font-size:12px;">(Designer and sock fanatic)</span><br>
	Communities, for me, started on AOL. The chat rooms was where I started. I evolved to javascript chat rooms later and eventually into Neopets clubs followed by a community software called Avidgamers and eventually stumbled across InvisionFree forums. It was while I was adventuring through Avidgamers that I discovered an art type called "pixel" art which truly explains my passion.
</p>

<p>
	I was personally never good at it but I found a community called "Eden Enchanted" where all these really awesome pixel artists were. So I started to develop my own Pixel art community (because back then I thought I might eventually get good at it so I should admin). I started on the free community software of "SMF" but envied the ease of use and the beauty of Invision Community (which this awesome pixel community used <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(they have outstanding taste</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>).
</p>

<p>
	After what felt like forever, which mind you was really only like 2-3 months, I bit the bullet and purchased an Invision Community license. I wanted this gorgeous piece of software and I couldn't live with the second rate free stuff anymore <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(</span><font face="helvetica neue, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><span style="font-size:12px;">there's our new advert slogan</span></font></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>. So I bought Invision Community 2.3 and delved in (this was back in 2007). I really haven't looked back since. I've been developing skins since I got it and I've made a few mods/applications on it back in the 3.0 days.
</p>

<p>
	I've owned and ran many communities, and roleplays, on Invision Community since. My current community, which has officially been running on Invision Community since December 2013, was transferred from InvisionFree (not my choice but god were we happy when we left).

	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Brandon </strong></span><span style="font-size:12px;">(Developer and XP log in screen enthusiast)</span><br>
	Back in roughly 2004-ish I got into customizing Windows XP (specifically I created custom login screens <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(this was </span><font face="helvetica neue, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><span style="font-size:12px;">actually</span></font><span style="font-size:12px;"> a thing?</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor) </span></font>but knew a lot of people who did the full alternative to Windows Blinds by hacking dlls) and eventually opened a site to host my work and to allow others to share theirs: bfarber.com.
</p>

<p>
	I used Invision Community v1.3 which was free at the time (2.0 was just getting into beta testing as I recall) and needed a file manager to share my work and to allow others to do the same. I downloaded a free file manager by a modder named 'parkeet' and after installing it on my site (which required those good ole "find X and replace with Y" PHP file modifications) I found that it was lacking in a few areas, so I set out to customize it.
</p>

<p>
	From this desire I taught myself PHP (I was already familiar with HTML, CSS and javascript) and learned how to modify the modification. Eventually, the original author left the mod scene (this was back in the ibmods days for those of you who have been here a while <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(I have</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>) and turned the work over to me. I was hired by IPS back around 2006 and shortly after I came on board I built a new Downloads manager from the ground up as a core offering for the company <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(Now I know who to assign all Download tickets to</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>. While I don't run my own site anymore (especially a third party hack site for Windows XP), I do have fond memories of my roots. This was both my start with web development (beyond building a few static HTML pages in the early days of the web) as well as my start with forums specifically.

	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Stuart </strong></span><span style="font-size:12px;">(Developer and owner of large computers)</span><br>
	My story is rather similar to the other ones here <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(selling this story from the off</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>. My story starts around 2000 when I started a car club with my brother, being the technical one, one of the first things to do was to set up a forum. We started with Ikonboard (imagine Perl &amp; flat-file databases etc), we swiftly followed Matt over to his new PHP-based project "Invision Power Board" <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(pretty sure the </span><font face="helvetica neue, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><span style="font-size:12px;">restraining order prohibited that</span></font></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>. With the introduction of the new licensing structure unfortunately with being very low budget we had to then move over to WBB <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(er...</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>. Soon after we moved back to Invision Community (It was the best and totally worth it! <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(I made him say that</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>) and I started to get interested with PHP (up to this point, I had only really used HTML/CSS) and learning how to make some changes that we needed for working with 'members' and tying our website in with our community. -- A really simple SSO type approach where the main website would show the user that's logged in and save data they submit, such as a tech spec and images of their vehicles.
</p>

<p>
	That community is still using Invision Community and in the meantime I've also converted (and run) some other car club communities that I've been involved in over the years. From there, I was asked to start writing SSO <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(single sign on, you're welcome</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">- Editor) </span></font>integrations in early 2014 for Invision Community and soon after became a full member of staff.
</p>

<p>
	I still run a number of communities to this day which gives great insight into how end users interact with the software and generally what their feelings of the platform is. Quite often, I'll deploy Alphas to these communities to gather feedback.

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Jim </strong></span><span style="font-size:12px;">(Support and his name is a bit like the lead singer from The Doors)</span><br>
	The first community I really heavily participated in was around 2003. Being a nerd and liking wrestling at the time <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(Ultimate Warrior FTW</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">- Editor)</span></font>, I joined a wrestling forum that ran a very beginning version of IPB. A lot of time was spent on this website and after becoming a moderator, I really feel in love with IPB.
</p>

<p>
	A sub-forum on this community that was pretty active was around graphic design. Feedback/showcases and competitions with the main point of focus around the wrestling world. This really took my interest and while my interest in wrestling kind of faded, graphic design led to the next step in my life and naturally joining graphic design communities.
</p>

<p>
	After being a part of quite a few graphic design forums (that were ran quite badly <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(honesty is always good</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>) came time for me to try my hand at this. Being technically inclined, I thought I could run a better show. We started out on PHPBB due to cost but after some frustrating moments, I persuaded the move to Invision Community.
</p>

<p>
	Come sometime around 2008 or 2009 and my new passion around cars had reached its peak, I came back onto the forum scene. In 2010, my favorite brand had become defunct so I decided to open a community dedicated to keeping its memory alive. First and only choice was to come back to Invision Community! (Believe early version 3 at the time) This community is still alive and I still have a lot of fun with it!

	My time on forums started in the late 90's, with a few motorcycle and photography forums I visited often. During the years as time progressed some of these went astray from what the core members wanted, so I started a few of my own Motorcycle forums with the core members following, that lead to other online communities such as Android <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(is that the cheap iOS knockoff?</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor) </span></font>in the late 2000's, and a few other communities. In about 08-09 I had enough of the main platform we were using and made the move to Invision Community <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;">(a man of fine taste</span></font><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size:12px;"> - Editor)</span></font>. <p>
	We, at Invision Community, love nothing more after a relaxing day writing PHP code, making commits in git and fighting with jQuery to indulge in a little therapeutic "me time".
</p>

<p>
	Given that we've all chosen to work in a nerdy industry (nerds are cool now, we checked) it's no surprise that our down time is spent on nerdy pursuits.
</p>

<p>
	Here's how our team spent their allotted and begrudgingly given free time.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="color:#353c41;font-size:20px;"><strong>Ryan</strong></span><span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:17px;"><span> </span></span><span style="color:#353c41;font-size:12px;">(Developer who loves of loud noises)</span><br>
	I'm an audio nerd. I go out of my way to hand pick each individual component whenever I'm building a an audio system. My computer, for example, currently has 4 satellite speakers (two Bose, two DCM models which are no longer in production - what is a shame, they are better than any I've ever had), and a sub-woofer (Bose). My living room system is my pride and joy - everything currently runs through a Sony 7.1 channel surround sound system, with a Polk Audio center channel, two Kenwood JL series tower speakers (before JL Audio was it's own thing - each contain a 1.5" tweeter, 5" Midrange, and 12" Subwoofer), two side-surround satellites that need replacing, and will soon have two rear-surround Bose satellites. Each system has specifically been fine-tuned and equalized to my specification.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">(Editor: I'd be happy with a HomePod)</span></span>
</p>

<p>
	The same applies to my guitar amps - I've spent years fine-tuning my amps to perfection, and constantly adjust and tweak various settings to get different sounds.
</p>

	As everyone likely knows I do a lot of pretty nerdy things, from cosplaying to video games to play by post roleplaying (collaborative writing) to collecting nerdy-shirts and playing board games but I think one of my more nerdy things would be that I collect socks and intentionally mismatch them (aka I'm Bi-sockual). I collect socks of all shapes and sizes to have for any occasion including socks with capes, leg warmers and more. I have a pretty nerdy collection including a ton of super hero socks, some Power Puff girls and more.

	I haven't done one in a while, but I like to have movie marathons sometimes. For instance, I'll plan to sit down one day and do nothing but watch Star Wars movies (or Harry Potter, or LOTR or whatever) all day in order. You then have to make the ever important decision of putting the prequels first, or after the originals, but otherwise it tends to be a fun experience watching the continuity from one distinct movie to the next (or, alternatively, looking for broken continuity). When I do this, we tend to eat popcorn, milkshakes and candy for lunch and dinner. Most of my family cannot sit still that long and will just bounce in and out during the marathon.

	I guess other than coding, the nerdiest thing I do is watch Formula 1 racing. Whilst this doesn't seem that nerdy, I do go a little overboard with it (as my wife reminds me regularly). This should give you a bit of an idea.
</p>

<p>
	At present we are approaching pre season testing. For those not familiar with formula 1, this is a testing phase before the new season, for teams to test their new cars. This means that the new cars are just being shown to the world for the first time. I will watch for these to see them as soon as they come out, then will take a look at what new parts I can see on the car in comparison to last year. Today for example saw the first glimpse of Mercedes, and at 3pm Ferrari will show off their new car online.
</p>

<p>
	In addition to that, I've been looking at the stats from last year, along with the know changes this year in engines. I have my own analysis of who I think will be the winners and losers, through the changes from last season in drivers, engine suppliers, and even paddock staff.
</p>

<p>
	Testing starts on the cars on Monday in barcelona. Whilst this is not on TV, I will be keeping myself updated with the latest events on there. My daily routine whilst testing is on consists of.
</p>

<p>
	Testing live stream running throughout the day during testing<br>
	Teds notebook in the evening - An show which analyses the days testing<br>
	F1 show - Another show which analyses each days testing<br>
	Autosport review - Article online with analysis<br>
	Sky news site - Usually some good analysis on there<br>
	BBC Sport - Again, some good analysis and different points of view<br>
	Motorsport.com - Pretty good website for analysis<br>
	And of course the formula 1 website itself.
</p>

<p>
	Boring to many <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">(Editor: yep)</span></span>, but I guess everyone has to have a hobby. For me its formula 1 analysis. Would love to have a go in one, but to do so it hugely expensive! <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">(Editor: given your history with crashing things, you'd never get insurance)</span></span>

Since then I’ve also started a nice little collection of cars including the incredibly geeky 2704 piece Porsche 911 GT3 RS with functional PDK gearbox and the VW campervan. My family bought me a few more sets for Christmas and I’m toying (no pun intended <span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="color:#7f8c8d;">(Editor: Puns are my thing, it's the only job I have left)</span></span>) with building a city with the larger modular sets. I’d say that was fairly geeky but I really enjoy the downtime of sitting down and building. I’m not terribly creative so following a set of instructions and seeing things come together appeals to me more than free building.

<p>
	As we come close to wrapping up development of Invision Community 4.3, we wanted to let you know of a few smaller improvements we've made to increase engagement to your community.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>Email</strong></span><br>
	Despite fancy new things like social media and push notifications, trusty old email has been proven to be highly effective at getting repeat visitors to your website.
</p>

<p>
	It's one of the reasons Invision Community has built in email support for notifications that can be sent instantly, or via daily or weekly digests.
</p>

<p>
	Email should form a part of every community marketing strategy but curating content and building newsletters can often be a labor intensive task.
</p>

<p>
	With Invision Community 4.3 we have added some additional automated email tools to help your users discover more of your carefully crafted content.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>Highlight the best content from throughout your community</strong></span><br>
	In 4.2 we introduced the concept of curated content with promotions and “Our Picks”. With 4.3 we’ve taken this a step further and these promoted items will now appear directly in your content related emails.
</p>

<p>
	This allows for your audience to be enticed back to your community with items that they may not have read but holds interest.
</p>

<div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">
	<p>
		<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" data-fileid="115797" href="//media.invisioncic.com/a319035/monthly_2018_02/email.png.5bacd7fa5fef92005a641c2e12d2afed.png" rel=""><img alt="email.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="115797" src="//media.invisioncic.com/a319035/monthly_2018_02/email.thumb.png.1362916cf0618a8a17b33a2686bcc873.png" loading="lazy"></a>

	<span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>Social media links in email footers</strong></span><br>
	If you look closely in the image above you will also see that you can now optionally include links to all of your social media sites within the footer of all of your outgoing emails.
</p>

<div>
	<div>
		<p>
			Both of these new features are enabled by default but can be disabled in the email settings section of your admin control panel.
		</p>

		<p>
			Email may be as old as the web itself, but it is a very powerful medium to get your audience coming back for more.
		</p>

		<p>
			<span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>Respond to Reviews</strong></span><br>
			We added the ability to leave a review to Pages articles, download files, calendar events and in other areas early on in Invision Community 4. The concept was to allow your members to engage in new ways with your content. Reviews on Commerce store items and purchasable downloadable goods is a great way to inspire others to purchase.
		</p>

		<p>
			New to Invision Community 4.3 is the ability for the content creator (be that a download file, store owner, etc) to respond to a review. This is a great way to address reviews that may be considered unfair or extreme.

<p>
	We've recently spoken about how we've brought our Gallery and Blog apps up to date with interface overhauls to bring them inline with the high standards our customers expect.
</p>

<p>
	Keeping this in mind, we're thrilled to announce that we've taken Commerce right back to 2009.
</p>

<p>
	This needs an explanation.
</p>

<p>
	Way back in 2009, Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President. Minecraft was put into beta, Slumdog Millionaire was released to critical praise and we had a product called IP.Subscriptions.
</p>

<p>
	IP.Subscriptions was a lightweight member subscriptions manager that allowed members to purchase elevated permissions via a user group upgrade.
</p>

<p>
	It was a fine little app. However, on the horizon we had a brand new eCommerce app in development. Then called Nexus, now called Commerce (we took months to come up with that).
</p>

<p>
	It made sense for us to merge the products into one app given they both had overlapping functionality. They both could create packages to promote members to a new user group. Commerce was much more developed as an invoicing and billing system.
</p>

<p>
	Everyone was happy.
</p>

<p>
	Almost.
</p>

<p>
	Commerce has grown to be an incredibly powerful app. It can sell anything from physical products like t-shirts, to digital products such as license keys and it can even manage your hosting set-up.
</p>

<p>
	We use it for our support and billing systems, so we know how robust it is.
</p>

<p>
	While it's an incredibly powerful commerce system, setting up basic subscriptions packages became a little more complex.
</p>

<p>
	Over the past few years we've received a lot of feedback on this.
</p>

<p>
	We've listened.
</p>

<p>
	<strong><span style="font-size:20px;">Commerce Member Subscriptions</span></strong><br>
	We've built a brand new section into Commerce specifically for membership subscriptions.
</p>

<p>
	Let's take a look at this in more detail.
</p>

<p>
	On the front end, there's a very clear and easy to understand page for membership subscriptions.
</p>

<p>
	Over the past 16 years we've seen a lot of trends come and go.
</p>

<p>
	When we started, AOL dial-up was the preferred method of choice (and probably the only method of choice). Compuserve were flying high and I think I'll stop this walk down memory lane before I turn into my own grandfather and start talking about how things were better in my day.
</p>

<p>
	A lot has changed. We've seen the rise of social media and how it disrupted habits. We've seen MP3 players become iPods, and iPods become iPhones and iPhones become iPads (other digital devices are also available).
</p>

<p>
	It's crazy to think that our company pre-dates Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.

<p><img src="https://media.invisioncic.com/a319035/monthly_2018_01/jason-rosewell-60014.jpg.17b064c6a4fc85a8f180ede2dc0ecc95.jpg" /></p>
<p>
	We have a very important announcement to make!
</p>

<p>
	There are times where you need to get the attention of your visitors. You might be closed on certain days of the year, performing server maintenance (if you are consider our <a href="https://invisioncommunity.com/buy" rel="">Cloud Plans</a>, they're excellent) or running a competition.
</p>

<p>
	Invision Community has always had an announcements feature baked in, but we felt it could be improved.
</p>

<p>
	Okay, maybe this feature isn't as flashy as some of the others we're introducing in 4.3, but these useful features should make managing your community easier.
</p>

<p>
	The new look announcement feature replaces the old widgets enabling you to display customisable announcements in any of the following locations;
</p>

<ol><li>
		Top of the page
	</li>
	<li>
		Above the page content
	</li>
	<li>
		In the sidebar
	</li>
</ol><div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">
	<p>
		<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" data-fileid="115633" href="//media.invisioncic.com/a319035/monthly_2018_01/image.png.a746e409ecc1f183a1864ae7f8f2667d.png" rel=""><img alt="image.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="115633" src="//media.invisioncic.com/a319035/monthly_2018_01/image.thumb.png.831a16c99767732265f4c85d8a1610e7.png" loading="lazy"></a>
	</p>

	<p class="cFramedImage_option">
		The three new announcement locations
	</p>
</div>

<p>
	Each location has some slightly different features; the page top banner is dismissible by the member if they no longer want to see it, whereas the banner above the content and the sidebar announcements cannot be dismissed.
</p>

<p>
	Most of the original customisable features are still available, including the ability to select which applications and pages show certain announcements and which member groups can see them. Combining this with the three new locations gives you much more flexibility for different types of announcements and we've also included the option to customise the color of the announcement.
</p>

<div class="ipsAreaBackground_light ipsPad ipsType_center ipsSpacer_both cFramedImage">

	The announcements have also been improved to contain more information. Rather than showing an unformatted snippet along side the title, announcements can now be tapped to open a modal showing any further details.
</p>

<p>
	"No man is an island" wrote John Donne. He wrote that a good 200 years before computers were invented, but it rings true for any well written framework like Invision Community.
</p>

<p>
	The included <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Representational_state_transfer" rel="external nofollow">REST</a> API allows developers to fetch data from Invision Community and also allows data to be added.
</p>

<p>
	This data can be used to power widgets on your website, or to be used within other applications you  are already using in a very simple way.
</p>

	<p class="cFramedImage_option">

	</p>
</div>

<p>
	Several enhancements have been made to the REST API for Invision Community 4.3 that we wanted to let you know about.
</p>

<p>
	These changes are developer-oriented, so if you do not use the REST API with your community please feel free to skip this update.
</p>

<p>
	If you would like to learn more about the REST API available with Invision Community, please see <a href="https://invisioncommunity.com/developers/rest-api" rel="">our REST documentation</a>.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Search capabilities</strong>
</p>

<p>
	As <a href="https://invisioncommunity.com/news/product-updates/43-scaleable-search-and-interface-improvements-r1062/" rel="">previously noted</a>, you can now perform searches through the REST API. You can perform searches based on keywords, tags, or both, and you can limit and filter results with parameters similar to when you perform a regular search on the site (e.g. to specific containers, returning only results over a set number of comments, or searching within clubs).
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Permission awareness</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Several REST API endpoints are now permission-aware when combined with <a href="https://invisioncommunity.com/news/product-updates/43-sign-in-from-other-sites-using-oauth-r1058/" rel="">Oauth functionality</a> built into Invision Community 4.3. This means that many REST API endpoints can be called using a specific user's access token, and only results that the specific user would normally be able to see will be returned (and/or they will only be able to submit to areas they normally have permission to).
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Ability to search members</strong>
</p>

<p>
	While an endpoint has always been available to retrieve (and add/edit/delete) members, the ability to search for members has now been implemented. You can search by name, email address, and (one or more) group(s), and a paginated response will be returned.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Private conversations</strong>
</p>

<p>
	You can now start a new private conversation, reply to an existing private conversation, and delete a private conversation through the REST API.
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Other REST API changes</strong>
</p>

<ul><li>
		You can now specify member's secondary groups when adding or updating a member through the REST API.
	</li>
	<li>
		You can specify the member's registration IP address through the REST API when adding or updating a member.
	</li>
	<li>
		You can now specify other member properties not directly exposed through the REST API when adding or updating a member by setting the rawProperties input field.
	</li>
	<li>
		You can now specify other member properties to retrieve through the REST API through the otherFields request parameter.
	</li>
	<li>
		The REST API now better logs changes to member accounts (so you will be able to more easily identify how a user's name, email address, password, etc. has changed when looking at the member history).
	</li>
	<li>
		You can now retrieve all content a member is following through the REST API, as well as follow a new container/content item, and delete an existing follow.
	</li>
	<li>
		You can now validate an account through the REST API
	</li>
	<li>
		You can now specify a 'perPage' parameter for paginated responses to control how many items are returned per page.
	</li>
</ul><p>

</p>

<p>
	Most of these changes were directly culled from client feedback and implemented per specific requests. If there are other REST API changes you would like to see implemented please don't hesitate to <a href="https://invisioncommunity.com/forums/forum/499-feedback-and-ideas/" rel="">leave your feedback</a>!

<p>
	Social media promotion should be a part of any marketing strategy. Curating interesting content from your community and sharing to social media channels like Facebook and Twitter is a great way to drive traffic to your site.
</p>

<p>
	Invision Community 4.2 introduced <a href="https://invisioncommunity.com/news/product-updates/new-promoting-content-r1009/" rel="">Social Media Promotions</a> to allow this.
</p>

<p>
	You hit the promote button, fill out the text to share with each service, click which photos to include and schedule the promotion or send it immediately.
</p>

<p>
	We use this feature almost every single day to share highlights to our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/invisioncommunityofficial/" rel="external nofollow">Invision Community Facebook page</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/invisionps" rel="external nofollow">Twitter</a>.
</p>

<p>
	This feature has had a significant impact in attracting visitors to our blog. This is now a core part of our marketing strategy.
</p>

<p>
	So what's new in Invision Community 4.3?
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>Facebook Groups and Pages</strong></span><br>
	A  popular feature request was to allow sharing to Facebook groups that you are an administrator of, as well as Pages you own.
</p>

<p>
	Not only that, but we now allow you to share to many places at once.
</p>

<p>
	When setting up Facebook, you can choose which Facebook properties to be used when promoting.
</p>
