Tom Christian reacted to Marcher Technologies in PAGES - Confused by IPB & the staff
Please, please, please, please re-add the ability to export templates without a database. Lack of premade MP templates for the articles database, including feed block templates, is directly related to Pages requiring we export the entire database, which makes absolutely no sense for the database that is preinstalled, and doesn't actually work for it, and that's not even considering the point that block templates cannot be exported via any means.
Those of us that can code cannot help those that cannot premade in this area with the way it is now. I cannot even do a custom locally with the way it is now, as there is no way to transfer such, which ends up with me working on a live site. Not cool. I was actually waiting for a topic such as this to be made. If somebody with a basic clue and can code like myself is struggling due to this, I can't imagine how painful this is for the layman, and the surprised look from staff was not expected... I put in a feedback topic a while ago begging for this to be restored, and have left it since then, but it is a very real need.

I spent the entire time waiting for your video to get to the point, and I still didn't get it. The only thing I could get from the video, 3 and a half minutes of it, is that you like waving your mouse pointer around icons, and somewhere on the internet is a site that uses post icons for every thread.

For bonus points, I then went on to my own IP.Board 3.0.3 installation and created a thread with a post icon, so I could see if you did have a point.

    You did not.

So, could you perhaps explain what your problem is, without Youtube this time? Because it sure isn't deprecated post icons (which are right... there...)

How about instead of merely saying that what Invision have is lacking, and what the competition has is better... Why not actually be constructive and say what it is that you want? Tell Invision, and the rest of us, in detail, what you consider to be "proper" documentation. What would satisfy your requirements?

Your hand-wavey complaints help no-one, constructive feedback would be much more useful.

Edit: Also, for the sake of being pedantic, as you were, "can't" can mean forbidden to / not permitted to, and thus IPS can not permit themselves to waste time on duplicating documentation. Thus they can't have both. :)

    Tom,

We're kind of going round in circles here. I don't know whether it's just that you don't like the new system, or you're having trouble finding what you need.

If there is something in particular that you are having trouble finding documentation on, please let me know and I will either direct you to it or get something written up if it is not available, but continuously making blanket statements of our documentation lacking doesn't help us help you. Tell us what you want, and we will do our best to provide.

If it's just that you don't like the idea of inline help and would prefer a single manual, then I'm sorry to hear that, but it's what the majority of our customers asked for.

Nobody want's a "large pdf" here, nobody's ASKING for it. You're right, that's just way too much.
If you think a "large pdf" is the ONLY way to do a manual, you're grossly mistaken. Again, look at how your competition does things, properly. Easy to update, not hard to deal with, and it's all right there.
Your "inline help" is severely lacking, and you can not deny that your proposed "solution" to these problems is not even a solution. Guides aren't going to cover much of anything. Inline help really doesn't cover anything, and articles are a joke.

So, what you have here is an astoundingly large piece of software with no proper documentation at all. You leave users hanging, instead of properly documenting your system, and providing information to your customers. Nice way to keep your customers.

Oh, and this is not accurate at all:

Can't means that it is physically impossible to do. This is 100% inaccurate. What IS accurate is

Which means, of course that you will not do it.

There is a huge difference between the two, and choosing that road shows a great disrespect for your customers, new, and old.

That is not documentation by any means.
Documentation helps the user understand what they're doing (and yes, even developers need that at times), not simply throwing them into code.
Documentation belongs in a manual, well written, well thought out, well presented, not spread out over 50 different articles.
In addition, it's on the company to provide documentation, not the end user.
Articles are opinion based and wordy, documentation is not.

You want to see proper, broken down documentation? Look at your competition. THEY did it right, and they've managed to keep it updated well enough. Examples, and explanation of what should be done, not just random code left for the user to figure out for themselves. Not to mention they've managed to keep it up to date. Easy to read, very well outlined, easy to follow manual.

Developers are not left to themselves. In fact, we have more developer documentation at this time than anything else.

So, basically, developers are left to help themselves. Nice one. Ignore the people that extend your product and functionality.

And no, that's not the only documentation I was looking for. A "getting started guide" doesn't cover everything though, and barely covers the "getting started", from one person (or group of person's) perspective, which doesn't help much. Sure, it helps a person get 'started' using your product, but what after that? What about when a user wants to change a theme? Of course, there's no 'documentation' for that.

You need real documentation, not just a guide to how to get started from a few people's perspectives. I get that the product is 'new', but you need at least the basic product documentation and howtos up before you release this stuff. Otherwise, you end up dealing with customers that have no idea what's gong on, all because you couldn't write documentation beforehand.

Well, let's hope this one goes a bit better than my last topic, which (seriously) wasn't meant to turn out as a flame war, or start one, but express my concern over what I felt to be a poor support timeframe.

Anyways, it's always good to have full product documentation, somewhere, yet, the links (in the admincp itself) go to support/docs/getting_started/board_gsg.php (on the IPB site) which doesn't exist. Oversight? Maybe the manual's not done yet?

Checking the 'support' dropdown, I see FAQS (which don't cover everything), in the client area, I see a link to a 'knowledge base' which, again, like the FAQS don't cover everything @ all (and it shouldn't).

Maybe I'm missing something here, or maybe the manual for 3.x isn't ready yet?

Tom Christian reacted to Rheddy in IPB Upgrades Becoming Minor Annoyance
With IPB 3.0.3 Upgrade, IPS Staff identified the following Hooks:

    (T30) Bump Up Topics
    (DP30) Top Reputation
(T30) Show Reputation in Topic View
    (IM) Users Awaiting Validation
    (IM) Global Forum Message
    (IM) Sliding Quick Login

I just think it's a sorry excuse to say you only support the IPB 3 upgrade errors associated with IPS Created Hooks. The fact is that IPB is supported by third party mods. One would think that this problem would have been dealt with by now. This makes the third time I have had to uninstall these hooks and reinstall them. IPB UPgrades are supposed to be trouble free and work with Skins and Hooks that are already installed.

I hate to say this, as I have enjoyed the forum software, but these excuses are vein and the lack of support in trying to fix this problem has yet to be corrected. You would think that these problems would have been fixed by now.

We have been looking into this issue, but as far as I am aware, nobody so far has been able to reliably reproduce it - if a board is only using hooks we've provided, it works fine (as proven by this forum).
In fact, from what I've seen, it is particular hooks that are causing the problem. We've just been unable to track down why. What hooks do you have installed?

    I had the same issue.

IPB forums rely on 3rd party mods, hooks etc. It is no good to say its all OK when using IPB made hooks. That's a cop out I am afraid. Unless of course, you are going to recreate ALL the 3rd party hooks and offer them to us?

It is one thing offering the hooks feature and another when we find out its not exactly as advertised.

Tom Christian reacted to Rheddy in IPB Upgrades Becoming Minor Annoyance
IPS Staff: I hate to say this but the IPS Upgrades are becoming a real inconvenient Annoyance.

What am I talking about? Everytime there is a service update to IPB (2.0.1, 3.0.2, etc) the upgrade creates havok with the hooks that I have installed. Not only do I have to disable the hooks, but, they have to be un-installed and then re-installed. The upgrades are not anticipating already installed hooks and adjusting for them and it's becoming an annoyance.

Does IPS plan on fixing this problem or is this going to be a regular 'romp and stomp' action with every upgrade/update? For one, I would love to see this corrected.

I am not sure what you expect us to do. By your own statement the account is not in your name it's in the name of the Scott you mentioned. Scott is the client of record. He could certainly login and change that information but that is up to him - we will certainly not go changing client login information just because someone claims to have purchased the license from a third-party site. Can you imagine the chaos that would cause?

Ok, so I purchased a license off of ize nearly 2 years ago, and all was well and good, until 2 days ago i try to login to my other account, display name, .Shawn, and find out it wont let me log in, so i try to recover my password, and it tells me there's no account in the system using that email address, so i find this a little fishy, so i contact support, and they tell me that the original owner has control of the account and that there,s no way to prove the account is mine, altho i have renewed it 2 times with my credit card, i gave them that info, gave them my email address that it used to be tied to, and pointed out the face that this guys name is scott i believe and the display name is .Shawn, i find this absolutely absurd that customer service, nor debbie will do anything for me. but really, what would they care, losing one customer wont hurt their pockets any..just my rant on the customer service here.

To buy a IPB blog requires you to buy a IPB board? WOW that's just a waste of money.

Now that's a total of $200.00. WOW you guys are trying to make money off from us.

I didn't find another place to post ,yet i find it sad that all it takes is about a minute to direct me towards the source file, if anyone has it they can upload it.

In any case if anyone has this particular source , i would be grateful for the files.
