It was always wrong though. You would change a core file and so every future update of that file would cause an unnecessary conflict. Adding an override in the custom.css was always the right solution. So, the change just prevents you from doing it the wrong way.

Personally, when I'm theming or updating CSS for something on my site, I'm in the browser inspector for most of time. Looking at how the relevant rules interact with each other and determining which change I want to make to achieve my goal.

There have been plenty of betas and a blog about the changes earlier in August.

I don't know what else we can do. We've given our marketplace authors about a year to prepare. We started releasing betas in May, and we posted the above in August; yet a lot of our marketplace authors seem unaware.

However, we do not want to cause our clients a headache, so we're working on a way forward that doesn't leave you without apps and plugins you need.

All these complaints but a simple server snapshot would have allowed an instant rollback. You’re warned to back up first.

Media queries are the standard way to write responsive websites. I'm not sure Invision need to reinvent that.

There is nothing simple or better about it. It’s just unreliable. What if use a smaller browser window on desktop? The site would break since it can’t be displayed properly. Because with your method, the code for smaller screens would have been removed. What if PHP can’t detect the device clearly for some reason? Again, the site could break because the wrong version could be delivered.
All in all, the benefits of stripping a few lines of unused code don’t outweigh the potential negative consequences. After all, it IS about the screen size, not the “type” of device. The break points are called “desktop”, “tablet” and “mobile” but that is just a convention. The device doesn’t really matter, so recognizing it isn’t the point. It must work for whatever screen size is available and that is something determined (and possibly even changed) on the client side.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention! I can confirm this should be further reviewed and I have logged an internal bug report for our development team to investigate and address as necessary, in a future maintenance release.

sorry, I was understanding this as "You can edit quotes and misrepresent them", but I get what you mean now. Apologies for the misunderstanding. Let me take a look at this

Errm, not wanting to spoil the snake-oil style sales pitch here. But, if you want to go and do some research, you'll find plenty of Invision based communities and websites doing very well in google.
It's the core web vitals which can potentially have an affect on rankings due to the fact they measure things which affect user experience, and even in the apparently terrible example you posted for this site, they pass.

The ones who need them are actually the minority of users. These however can still be edited in designer mode as mentioned by Matt.
I would say, with regards CSS being harmless, and people being able to restore, you are referring to yourself as a user here, and not the majority. While we do provide tools to revert templates, and even to check on default themes without doing that, people tend to post a topic/ticket on these things in the first instance. Something being harmless really depends on context. What is harmless to you, may be harmless to others. One person missing all the CSS on the front end and posting a ticket, is another persons "Its probably cache, so I cleared that and it was fixed in a second".

Is something wrong with the new trending topic system on here, the topics showing on there don't seem like they're really going to be trending right now, since they're from 2015.

I think you're misunderstanding a little in terms of how speed and google rankings relate. Although Google have never given a definitive answer (to my knowledge), the current consensus is that as long as you pass the core web vitals tests, then speed won't be a negative factor. So, once you do pass them, you're not going to gain anything in that respect by spending more time trying to get additional small gains in speed.
Out of the box, assuming it's hosted on reasonable servers which are appropriately resourced for the traffic the community receives, and assuming there are no modifications causing issues, from what I've seen at least, Invision's software passes the core web vitals tests.
So, for the vast majority of sites, that's great. If your hosting isn't great, or you have a bunch of modifications which slow things down, then you may need some extra help to pass the core web vitals test. Perhaps you were in that boat, who knows. But, personally I'd still recommend you and others in a similar position look first at the root causes of any specific problems you're having and dealing with those. Going to great lengths to minimise the css is more like a sticking plaster and a time consuming one at that.
