bEARS reacted to Colonel_mortis in My initial impressions of achievements
I've not really played around with achievements yet, but I think that's all the more reason to give this feedback now.
My initial impression as a user on this site is that it's not obvious:
What points are How I get points, and how many points things are worth How many points I have How the ranks compare (beyond just that each one is higher than the previous) (ie how many points each rank is worth) What I can do to unlock new badges (there's an argument that some badges should be secret, but certainly most should not) These are the sorts of things that experienced members will figure out within a couple of weeks, and maybe all that information is available for users somewhere that I'm not immediately seeing. However, the fact that I'm not immediately seeing it is the problem. For achievements to really work they need to be walk-up usable - a new member needs to be incentivized to ask questions, to post good answers, and to come back to the site next week, and right now, it doesn't do that.
On the user menu, it highlights my rank and progress, which is great, but I want to click it and see more details. It feels weirdly non-interactive, and leaves me wanting more info.
For a good case study, take a look at Stack Overflow. I can look at all the badges, and see my progress towards them. I also see a graph of my rep (which on SO is less valuable because rep is compounding as people find your old questions, but on forums would be a more active incentive to keep increasing it).
Building on the SO example, wouldn't it be neat if achievement ranks could be configured to actually benefit you? Even the group promotion rules are conspicuously missing the ability to promote by rank. I want to set some rules like "level 1 can only use forums, level 2 can use blogs and status updates, level 3 can post news, level 4 can use classifieds, level 5 gets more messenger storage, etc", which I think would be a great way to incentivise engagement and give users a goal to work towards that is more than just a slightly different coloured icon on their profile picture.
Also, and this is borderline a bug, the default badge descriptions are inconsistent - some don't have descriptions, some have passive descriptions ("a week since joining"), some have present tense descriptions ("making your first post"), and some have past tense descriptions ("visited daily for a week"). There's also no way to edit them (which I will report as a bug).
Another thing - wouldn't it be nice if getting a badge could give you points? As far as I can see, that's not a thing at the moment.

We already know that in 4.6 we will be able to use the WebP format.
We need webp NOW (.webp) images support But will SVG support also be added? Why? Because SVG format is intended for logos and icons. Assets load in lightning speed, much faster than in PNG.
    Please consider the suggestion 🙂

Hi, would be great to see an update or solution for this soon. Otherwise I won't be able to make use of this plugin and I'm pretty sure same applies for other people.
@Kevin Carwile (creator of the automatic rules plugin) last visit was couple of months ago. So I doubt he will update it anytime soon.
Also are you available for custom work/modification of this plugin? Paid job of course.

bEARS reacted to Jordan Miller in Invision Community "Medium" business model application
Hey team! @Jordan Invision here. Slipping into my other account on Sunday funday to see what your thoughts are on this idea I've been thinking about.
For many years, I've been interested in removing ads from my forum, but I think the standard subscription model for my community wouldn't go over well. I don't have any concrete proof, just a hunch.
Now, if my members could actually earn money via Stripe for posting engaging content within our rules, that would be epic.
    ---
Recently, I've been writing articles on Medium. Their business model (to me) is brilliant. Everyone wins: Medium, the publisher and the readers.
They explain in detail what it is (if interested check this out).
    In a nutshell it's this:
A subscription model at $5 per month for unlimited reading
Guests can view a few content items per month without an account/subscription
Publishers can earn revenue on the content items they post
Publishers earn revenue by subscribers reading their post
The amount the publisher earns is based off of how many articles that reader read on Medium that month For example, someone pays the $5 and only reads 2 articles on Medium in total that month, you get a larger chunk of their $5 Or, someone could read 50 articles on Medium that month (including one of yours) and you receive a smaller chunk of their $5 ---
I think the concept might sound a little confusing at first glance, but it's relatively simple.
Essentially, the publisher is rewarded with money for posting engaging content. The community benefits by having people post content they want to engage with. The community is also incentivized to post engaging content as well because they could earn some of their subscription back and possibly make a profit. And the community owner of course takes a cut. Because the community is generating revenue, ads are no longer needed.
This would need to track what content items users visited, then allocate an amount to that user based on their usage over a 30-day period.
To me, this could be a game-changing application baked into Invision Community. I am writing this to see if anyone finds this kind of business model appealing, or think it's a waste of time, or...? Perhaps there are some huge drawbacks/downsides to this for a community. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

    Hi,
By default, referrals are active for a year:
    In /Dispatcher/Front:
    \IPS\Request::i()->setCookie( 'referred_by', \intval( \IPS\Request::i()->_rid ), \IPS\DateTime::create()->add( new \DateInterval( 'P1Y' ) ) );
    … 1 year is… 😳 😲
That would be great to be able to choose this duration, like 1 week, 1 month, 10 days…
    Thank you!

bEARS reacted to LiquidFractal in IPB native Points System (IP.Subeconomies? IP.Points?)
Perhaps this is a pipe dream, but as sub-economies have proven to be a very effective way of hijacking goal-oriented psychology I would love to see a native points system in IPB.
In such an application one could develop different "banks" for different types of points systems depending on the nature of your website.  Examples:
"credits" (for purchasing services, Store products, exchanging for cash donations to relevant charities) tokens (for gambling, buying bling for their online personae) hours (if you're like me, you sell hours of tuition and/or consultation) How might these points be accumulated/awarded?  Examples:
buying blocks of tokens/credits/hours in the Store buying Store products: buy product X and get Y amount of credits in points system Z having the highest-rated answers in a Q/A Support forum having the highest reputation in a given forum Awarding points to people who invite new members to your community completing courses or other certifications Other ideas:
Targeted emails to certain groups, or certain individuals when credits/tokens/hours are at X or 0 - time to get more!) Targeted emails to people indicating they've been awarded free tokens/credits/etc. Promotions where points are awarded under special circumstances from dates X to Y Toss tokens into a (virtual) fight pit and watch your community fight for them.  Cue the oldschool Star Trek fight music.  Dance, puppets, daaaaance! mwuahahaha) Hijacking goal-oriented psych--err, offering points could be a great way to spur development and participation in one's community.  They could also obviously be integrated into other apps (or other apps could make use of points) as part of competitions, e.g., submitting the highest-rated photos, articles, blog posts, etc.  The possibilities go on and on!
As some know there have been a couple of third-party devs who have made Points systems, but I have come to think that if one is going to embed something like this into a community (let alone a business) I wouldn't want to trust it to anyone but the core developers for updates and stability.
I obviously can't speak for others, but I for one would be happy to pay for this as an additional (optional) IPS module, similar to the way IP.Downloads is offered.

bEARS reacted to zyx in Feedback: Great feature - well executed
Would be really great to have slightly more control over the widgets. For example, on our community, we'd love a recent activity block that:
Showed the name of the thread, but with the avatar and username of the person who just posted in it (rather than thread creator). Showed the forum section where the thread is (so in this case, would have a small label saying 'feedback & ideas'). Additionally, perhaps some way to incorporate a user's custom activity stream within a sidebar block. The activity streams are such a great feature, but underutilised when buried away within the activity page. Having user's be able to see a shortlist of their chosen content (based on their own settings) right there on the homepage sidebar would be brilliant.

First time I've really seen the new sidebar topic summary in action. Works really well especially on multipage threads. It gives a real flavour of what the thread is all about.

Just a thought on this, it works so well that I am wondering whether something similar couldn't be used in topic lists. I've got a feeling it would do a better job than what we currently have:
