AGAIN some next level stuff! All these updates so far are all one by one amazing! Meanwhile all updates on a community software I won't disclose, have been nothing BUT disappointing.
Love the work you all are putting into this. Great work, as always.

evcom reacted to Ehren in Invision Community 5: Dark mode, accessibility, performance and mobiles!
Welcome to the second video of our sneak peak series! Today we'll be taking a closer look at the new Invision Community interface, including dark mode, accessibility improvements, performance improvements and the mobile layout! Before we begin, I should mention that this is a pre-alpha version of Invision Community 5, so some areas of the design may change before the official release.

    New traditional header design
In our previous video, we showcased our new, optional side panel which formats your navigation into a vertical list. For those who prefer a traditional, horizontal header, here it is!

A much more compact header compared to version 4, the new design condenses the navigation bar into a single row, moving all sub-navigation items into dropdown menus. A new, optional area below the text logo allows you to add your website slogan or announce events such as anniversaries or holidays, and our new search modal provides convenient access to the advanced search filters from any page on your community.

    Accessible interface
The main content area has been designed with accessibility as a priority. High contrast text colours and larger font-sizes help to make reading more comfortable and clickable table rows (which can be enabled or disabled via the Theme Editor) allow you to navigate between pages more easily. A visible focus ring significantly improves navigation for visitors who find it more comfortable to browse with their keyboard TAB key, instead of using their mouse (ie. visitors with conditions such as Parkinson's disease, or those who have temporarily lost function due to a broken arm).

    Focus.mp4
Elements are highlighted while navigating with the keyboard

    Dark mode
Dark mode has become increasingly popular over the past few years - so it's no surprise that Version 5 has been designed from scratch with both light and dark mode in mind. With version 4, it was necessary to manage two themes in order to provide a light and dark colour scheme. In version 5 though, all of that is handled by a single theme.
By default, your members will be able to choose their own color scheme preference: either light, dark, or system. System assigns a color scheme based on your system preferences - so if your device automatically switches to dark mode at night, your community will too! With that said, as an administrator, you also have the option to restrict your site to a single color scheme - so if you ONLY want to offer a dark theme, that's easily achieved.

    Performance
Despite all of these new inclusions, the version 5 UI has been coded with significant reductions in both CSS and Javascript. We'll dive deeper into code reductions in a future blog entry, however two great examples are:
    - Grids: which have had a 100% removal of Javascript and are powered by only a few lines of CSS, resulting in a faster rendering time, especially for users on slow connections.
    - And carousels: which have had a 95% reduction in Javascript and now rely on native browser scrolling, for a much smoother experience on both desktop and mobile!
Additionally we've removed a number of helper libraries that are no longer needed with modern browsers saving even more.

    Mobile UI
With an incredible amount of mobile visitors accessing the web, we’ve placed a huge priority on redesigning the interface to ensure it lives up to todays standards.
A new navigation bar at the bottom of the page provides convenient access to your activity feed, notifications, messages, a search panel, and navigation links. A conscious effort was made to ensure that this information was available within a single tap, and we found that a bottom bar like this was easier to interact with compared to icons in the header.

The mobile navigation bar from Invision Community 5

A goal of the mobile UI was to display elements that were previously only available on larger devices, while still maintaining a clean interface. For example, to improve navigation, we've added a scrollable breadcrumb list to the top and bottom of the page. To improve guest participation, we added Sign In and Sign Up links to the bottom navigation bar. These links were previously hidden within the hamburger menu, so we feel like this will really benefit those looking to improve registrations. And as demonstrated in last weeks video, profile information is now available within posts, comments and reviews on small devices.
We’re really excited for you to literally have a hands on experience with the new mobile interface of Invision Community 5, and we're interested to hear your feedback in the comments!

evcom got a reaction from SeNioR- in Filter in fluid view not displayed
Thanks @Jim M for your support. I just tested this by removing the potential conflicting category. The filters still do not show. I also tested in on another section where I have just two simple subforums (BMW and Mini). But the filters do not show.

Interestingly, if I use fluid view on a global scale, the filters do show, as designed.
If actived per forum, it merges the topics, but now filter is displayed.

Edit: Just tested it by disabling third party apps. And it worked! So I will check which one it is...and found it: The app "Different sidebars for each forum 1.1.0" is causing the conflict.

    Hello,
I feel we should revisit the platform’s compliance with GDPR, in light of the latest developments and clarifications issued by the EU. Had some discussions, read a lot about this and it's clear to me that the classic Cookie strip with one button (I accept) simply doesn't cut it anymore and would make the website owner liable for not fully following the current regulations.

It's been brought to my attention from the ad network we use, that we should provide a full Consent message to every visitor of our site, and give them the option to choose which cookies, if any, they would want to be used during their visit. There are already many services out there like Cookiebot, Quantcast and OneTrust which can scan one’s site and automate the process by creating this banner. Of course even if they have limited free packages, my main concern is that there are limitations to styling, speed, translation, etc. I feel that such features must be provided from the platform itself, which must integrate the IAB Consent Framework.
A valid cookie consent banner has to look like the one Cookiebot provides, offering the ability to choose the type of cookies the visitor wants. If you’d like to see a live example, visit this page.

Two links from the Cookiebot site, which I really feel that they offer a full picture of what is the proper way to have a GDPR Consent banner in your site.
GDPR and cookies | GDPR cookie consent | Is my use of cookies compliant? Active consent and the case of Planet49 | CJEU | GDPR & ePR I’d very much like to read your thoughts on this and particularly whether such options are included in the roadmap.

evcom reacted to Matt in Hump Day: Announcing Invision Community's new swag store!
Take a deep breath. It's going to be OK.

Jordan is not "focused on selling t-shirts". That's a weird statement to make considering he posted a link. It is not like his 9-5 job is now revolving around t-shirt sales. As much as I'd love to have a "Director, T-Shirt Sales" in the company, we're not quite big enough for that yet.

Because we opened a store, it does not mean that we no longer have capacity to serve customers. That's bizarre thinking.

Invision Community developers have had nothing to do with a store, so rest assured, they also are not full time "t-shirt sales executives".

We haven't pivoted into apparel. We just opened a store.

We chose to not use commerce because we wanted to use a service that can take orders, issue invoices, take payments AND fulfil the orders without any of us having to do a thing.

If we did use commerce, then our developers would have needed a few months to write new features and APIs, and Jordan will, ironically, be a full time t-shirt executive as he'd be picking, packing and posting.

Which everyone states they don't want us to do. 🙂
It's really quite normal to have a marketing and sales department. It's not like when Pepsi needs a new advert creating they have to close the factory and re-assign factory staff to do it.
Also please PLEASE stop singling out Jordan for criticism just because he is the one that posts here.

If you have criticism, then please direct it at me. Thanks 🙂

Just want to drop in and say I appreciate all of the feedback (both positive and negative) as well as the support from the team!
The shop was a fun little internal project for our team to buy Invision-branded swag. I suggested sharing it with Invision clients as well (since the shop was already made) because I assumed it'd be fun for some of you to buy swag (thank you to those who have ordered btw!).
I know there's always a bit of a knee-jerk reaction when announcing things because there is so much that can be done to continue to improve the platform. Ultimately, I know the passion comes from a good place. 🙏
We aren't in a position to share a public roadmap because there are too many moving parts and change of plans. When we're ready to announce something, like our new block submission feature, it's got to be fully thought out and tested. We then absorb feedback so we can improve upon it. 😊
All that to say: we definitely hear you, appreciate you and are continuing to work hard for ya. Now, if you're down to rock an Invision T, sweatpants or mug, please hit that purchase button. 😎

"Free" is a very misleading term when it comes to social media platforms.  Users of social media voluntarily become the product in exchange for being able to use the "free" things that social media companies make available to them.
I would rather pay Invision for the continued evolution of IPBoard, and pay extra for premium features that go above and beyond what the basic platform provides, than have Invision incorporate Facebook-esque marketing algorithms into the software and monetize my community's members for Invision's gain.

The Cloudflare Community came to the rescue with the right pointer. The 'activity log' of the firewall rules shows the details of the triggered event. What I now did, is to allow the Invision Community user agent...This resolved the issue and login to the marketplace is no longer blocked.
There might be better solutions. Suggestions are welcome 🙂

That was it. I started blocking ASNs using Cloudflare. I found the resprective ASN numbers by entering the IP addresses into a Whois lookup site, providing also the corresponding ASNs. After blocking about 8 of them, bot traffic dissapeared.

Use Cloudflare if you aren't already, that's my number one recommendation.
It can do a tremendous job in reducing the number of malicious bots and scrapers that visit your website.

evcom reacted to Morrigan in Create Menu still needs a re-work
So I have been revamping my main site for ages today and it reminded me how much I loathe the "Create" link.
It shows you EVERYTHING you have access to submit if your database name and the record name are the same they are redundant as hell (Submit Record to Records) and this is even more prevalent when you use a single category setup instead of having multiple categories.
On top of that (and I'm submitting this in a separate topic) Pages databases are a mess in it.
I recently revamped my Create link, though I can't fix all of my issues I was able to take it from this:

    To this:

While some of that (I'd say about five from the first section) are admin/staff only it doesn't make that list any less daunting or confusing for an end user.

    So my issues:
No option in order. It currently follows an App order to put it into the list and for Pages they are all listed in whatever order they want looking at it now. No option in what shows in here. If I want a database to be submitted from only one page I can't tell the create menu (without editing the template) what not to show. Create is too vague of a term. I changed my verbiage to "Quick Create Content" to see if it gets used any more than it had been before as it stands even though it moves with the site I still don't think my members know what it is or how to use it.
What I want is something where you can mange what shows up and in what order. People are already inundated with how much stuff can be on any one site, it would be good not to overload them with looking through a long list of what they can submit and focus them on your primary content sources.

The big turn off with Pages (and don't get me wrong here, it is a 'powerful' application) is lack of flexibility in terms of user ease; you really need to understand a lot about databases and templates in order to wring out the best from Pages; that's not for novices.  I've been a hound dog in these forums advocating more time to be spent on the other applications besides forums in order to give them some muscle that can empower users to have more ease of use and more options.
There are some excellent add ons in the marketplace for Pages, especially from @opentype and they bring a semblance of simplicity to using Pages, but it pretty much ends there.  Documentation, as @Jimi Wikman points out is, in a word, crap.  I fail to understand why the developers have produced such a powerful application and basically shelved it.
I wouldn't touch WP with a bargepole as it is an accident waiting to happen in terms of hackers and having to continuously updating plugins in, not many of which are guaranteed to be constantly supported, especially if they are free.  The integration of a single system is far better, but having said that it is only as strong as its weakest components, and weakest doesn't necessarily mean those points are not strong, simply that they are lamentable components for those who are not developers or coders.  If they were brought into the 21st Century with simple, but powerful, options that everyone could use out of the box, then we would have a VERY powerful suite of applications to play with and create some amazing sites.

Depends on your goals. If you go with WordPress + Invision Community you essentially set up two different websites — one for the blog, one for the community. If that’s fine with you, you can do that. If you want your blog posts to be PART of the community, you should go with Pages.
Others have correctly pointed out that Pages has a steep learning curve in contrast to the other IC apps and WordPress, but learning how to do it might be a small price to pay if you run the website for years to come.
