SJ77 reacted to JustinHawk in Buying new self hosted licence - how to choose few applications?
Licenses that expire without payment will immediately lose access to support, upgrades, spam prevention, geo location, and more. Reinstating a license will require catching up on any missed monthly payments or pay a full year renewal. Licenses not renewed after 24 months will be expired permanently and cannot be renewed, but you may purchase a new license for full price.

Would like some better clarification on Reinstating a license terms, so we pay for all missed payment if selected monthly like a loan/emi payments?

Correct. So you would pay $199/year instead of $300.
Edit: Or $19/month. You can choose your option.
It should also give you credit for your history with your current license type and offer you at least a few months free 🙂
    Yes, that's been fixed.

Those were greyed-out but I can see how that would be confusing.

For those of you asking about your current license or v5: you can keep your current license as is and v5 does not yet exist so nothing to report on that just yet.

This screenshot also says you're getting "Live Topics" and "Real Time Features" on classic.
The page can really benefit from some proofreading, before it causes any more confusion.

So now I pay $150 at every 6 months. With the new model, will I pay $199 per year? Is that right?

Well, that's what I would have liked to see asked before you guys started working on v5. Nothing's going to change at this point, even if we answer. 🤷‍♂️

There have been quite a few developers and theme designers that have left the marketplace or are on the fence as to whether they will continue developing for v4 let alone the v5 platform.
Your team has been working extensively on two different codebases and have become quite intimate with it.
I would recommend trying to visualize how difficult it would be for a developer new to the platform to setup a development environment and learn how to effectively create programs that meet your marketplace acceptance criteria.
    Things to generally think about:
How closely do your programmers adhere to common programming methods for each of the languages you utilize? Is your codebase entirely PHP 8 compliant or are you still utilizing code written for earlier versions?   Are your APIs intuitive to use? Is the cost for entry too high for the first couple of years a developer is learning how to write really good programs and their sales are next to none? Could your error messages be more informative? How does a programmer effectively test their apps?  What lessons learned from your testing team could be useful to a new programmer or to your customers that help beta test two different versions of your suite until such time as v4 is fully deprecated? Would it be beneficial to put a little more structure around public beta testing to minimize the number of additional betas or dot releases after final release. What might you do differently to make becoming a developer more appealing to make recruitment "MUCH" easier and to keep the ones you already have for the long term?

SJ77 reacted to Dazz in Any suggestions for large upload file sizes, slow upload speeds? Causing Error -200.
I have seem to have put in a rule for the /files folder, but this seems counter intuitive as I still want page content and images from /files to be cached.  Seems like there should be a way to allow for files < 100mb to still be uploaded/cached and be able to bypass cache for files > 100mb.

I thought the chunking was able to get around this.

My site will sometimes get large files uploaded.  Anywhere from 200MB to ~1.5GB on a regular basis.  It seems that people with slower upload speeds are encountering Error 200 when uploading files.
What are some recommended settings that need to be setup to handle large uploads?  We have changed several settings in regards to max_execution times, etc.  Are there other suggestions?

The manual payout in /applications/nexus/sources/Gateway/Manual/Payout.php has a value in the code that still forces it to be manually approved:

Are you using a Twitter v1.1 or v2 API key? If you are using a v2 API key, there are known issues that would be present here as our system is not yet compatible with it.

We are aware of some issues with Twitter at present. Keep an eye on our guides for any updates to those. I have it on my list to take a look at. We do not however link with v2 at all currently. Only v1

SJ77 reacted to Arthmoor in Spam Defense/Filtering
So in recent weeks my forum has had a wave of spammers who have been able to freely post blatantly obvious spam on the site. Word filtering is absolutely ineffective to preempt them, and in the most recent case, isn't stopping them at all despite the terms being added to the post filter. In the support thread I filed, it was made clear your current anti-spam system only deals with user accounts, NOT with the content of the things they're posting. I'd say that's proven to be more or less useless. What IPS needs is preemptive/proactive spam defense, not reactive flagging and content deletion.
To that end, I'd like to very strongly suggest that IPB set up a partnership with the Akismet anti-spam service that's widely used by Wordpress blogs and a number of other sites and applications. Their system works by analyzing the actual content being posted and will return a yes/no type of response as to whether they think it's spam or not. From my own experience, they're rarely wrong about that. I'm using it on a bug tracking site I wrote myself, along with an obsolete forum package I still keep online for an old MUD.
A properly implemented Akismet setup will flag spam and store it in a temporary place for moderator review. From there, the content can be checked. If it's not spam, the moderators can click a button to indicate this, and a false positive is sent to Akismet for the system to learn from it. If it is spam, you can either delete it on the spot or let it sit in the pool until a specified expiry time (on my other 2 sites, I use the suggested 30 days). If a post actually does manage to hit the forum, the moderators can click a button there to have it reported as spam and their system learns from that as well. So it's very adaptable. What's even cooler, is the content scanning is done in real time so there's no having things sitting in some queue for days before it's evaluated by their servers.
There's a great deal more useful information to be found at https://akismet.com/ such as developer support and API documentation etc. I'm sure they could explain the gory details a lot better than I can. In the end though, this would be a wildly more effective way of dealing with spam than what we currently have.

SJ77 reacted to Dreadknux in Twitter's Mid-Life Crisis and the IPS Promotions Feature
So with Twitter going a bit insane with all its API stuff lately, I have noticed that a lot of functionality on my IPS Suite no longer works (such as the ability for users to sign up/log in using their Twitter accounts). So I decided to deactivate the Twitter option from the 'Login and Registration' page on the Admin panel.
I don't know if it was the above action that caused the following to happen (or if the Twitter API stuff in general just caused this), but... I noticed that I now cannot de-couple Twitter from the 'Social Media Promotion' section of the Admin panel. And yet, Twitter fields and icons still appear in the Promote button/dialog which is functionally useless.

First, going to Social Media Promotion > Twitter shows that it's "not set up", which is odd because...

... the Twitter icon still appears on the Promote button...

... and an option for Twitter still exists. If it doesn't work (thanks Twitter), I don't want the option on here anymore, but obviously I can't remove it because IPSAdmin thinks the application is not set up.

The problem is, as I suspected, I can't actually "re-set up" the Twitter application because going to 'Login & Registration' > 'Twitter' > 'Enable' and filling in the Settings results in constant errors. Obviously the problem with this is Twitter, not IPS, but that's the entire reason why I want to just get shot of the Twitter integration. But something's happened here where IPS thinks it's not connected to Promotions, even when it functionally is (despite it likely not working).
Not sure if it's just something on my setup because I pressed a button wrong somewhere and Twitter's API changes caused a lock on my Suite, but it'd be nice to have a hotfix for this issue in case it can be replicated on other communities.

It's indeed weird. Email addresses should e unique. Meaning an user can't use the same email address for multiple accounts.
For future reference, if you want to limit the number of registrations from the same ip, have a look at my plugin.

I ma just saying that when you mention security issue and without more information I tend to upgrade immediately as there could be an exploit on the site.
Maybe you could define the criticality of the security issue, after all CVEs are scored from 0 to 10.
