How about doing patch releases on a regular schedule, such as on the first Tuesday of each month? That way, people can predict and plan for the work that will be needed (which for patch releases, with no new features or breaking changes, should be pretty minimal), and we get a reasonable cadence of bug fixes.
Features should be released in minor releases (4.6 etc). Personally, I would be happy to see more frequent but smaller feature releases, say every 6 months with a couple of changes each time, as long as the scope of a release is fairly clear (ie. there are no breaks in a patch release like 4.5.5) and it doesn't affect the cadence of bug fixes (so we're not waiting 1.5mo and counting for bug fixes).

It improves greatly content discovery (one advantage we have over social media). And now I can imagine the egos of our users scrambling to write a high quality comment that could be selectable with this distinction.
    This is great, guys. Thanks!

It wasn't planned, but yea, I can probably next week. Right now this whole app includes dozens of changes for the topic page, will need to add some settings to make them optional 🙂

I would have thought that, in order to achieve that, we'd need to group or order those comments in some way. In a linear chronological view it would only be able to take you to one of them. Can IPS group top/highest rated comments in a reddit-esque style? If so, I agree it would be a good option for that use case.

    We really needed:
"Take me to the most popular comments" or
"Take me to the highest rated comments"
The reason why that's so important is because the most popular or highest rated comments // content by the community usually defines the best answers without the need to read through the entire topic to get to the most informational or informative answers of the topic. Not many people anymore want to read an entire thread to get to the best answer(s) provided by the community. This could be a game changer in forum software. The idea here is to promote the highest quality content and keep people on the site, not deter them because they have to read pages upon pages to find the best answer.
The way this is now is just moving around what we had, these options do not help in defining the most informative content for a user that wants to save themselves some time, it also doesn't reward people for giving the best answers nor does it persuade people to try and give a best answer. We're still forced to read content that may not even apply to the topic subject at hand.
    Thanks

Luckily, thanks to our work on the native app, we now have a services infrastructure that can register user devices and send notifications - when we feel the time is right. That's an example of the work we're doing on the app feeding back into the main product.
You are obviously welcome to voice an opinion, but I feel like we're going in circles a bit. We've explained why we're going this route and why we don't feel PWA should be a sole focus right now, so repeating "but why?" in every reply won't get a different answer at this point.

This part alone is enough reason for us to provide an app, I think. Many admins that offer TapaTalk have been itching for a first-party (or even a third-party) alternative. They view TapaTalk as a necessary evil, not something they're legitimately pleased to offer their users. We hope to be different in that regard.
Regarding web vs. not web. If web apps on their own were perfect, there'd be no market for TapaTalk, for example - but as you say yourself, there clearly is. The lines are blurring though; the codebase we have for the native app can be transformed into a web app with a little effort. It is, after all, built on a framework originally designed for the web. We will be able to take what we learn from building a new native app, and apply that to the regular web view. Probably not in the 4.x line at this stage, but certainly in the 5.x+ lines. Some of the work may even be directly beneficial. For example, with the new API, we or third-party developers could build entirely new ways of using the Invision Community platform on the web.
Finally, we know the app won't appeal to all communities, for various reasons. That's OK. The app won't stifle any potential PWA work (and as I said, it'll actually make it better), so those that don't want to use the app won't lose anything. Those that do will gain a new way of offering their community to users.
