Some thoughts in no particular order:
    1. Yes, Facebook will be here for a very long time.  They've done an exceptionally good job of making the service as sticky as possible for users, with games, marketplace selling, and soon their Libra coin.
    2. Facebook and Discord is not free.  There's a false sense of free with those services, where it's literally costing you your user data and privacy.
    3. Whether or not Facebook and Discord are easier to start a new community on, they're exceptionally bad for large communities with a lot of activity.  There's no long form communication or organization on those platforms, which makes to hard to save and retain the best content.
The one overwhelming takeaway from this article is that anytime you rely on another platform, you're at it's mercy.  The only way to protect yourself is to run an independent community.  You lose a lot of the platform's benefits, but you control your own destiny.

4.3 is going to be a wonderful thing!
One thing I do miss from my old CMS/Forum community we had years ago, was the ability to push a single topic via email to all members by admin.
For example, a member creates a wonderful topic in the forum, I see it as an immediate benefit for our members to receive that topic in their inbox, so I click on "Share to All", and that topic is sent out via email to all members. When I had that ability, the engagement was incredible.

I just found this out awhile back by pure accident, it is an awesome and powerful feature by IP. I am running a wiki powered by TikiWiki, and I have an IP Block displayed on our wiki. You can see it in action at http://thepatriotwoodworker.org/blogpost1-The-What-s-It-Project-Introduction
It resides under the header title " Current What's It". That block is actually a block I have on our IP Forum, you can see that same block at https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/
When I update the IP Block, the block updates as well at our wiki site. Just thought I'd share a living example of the genius of it.
