I think you misunderstood - if your license is active when the version that contains this feature is released, and you upgrade to that version, then this feature would be available to you regardless of license status after that point.

You're in luck, the feature is free with any active license 🙂

I mean even 20 clients on business beats 500+ self host customers in terms of price. Which is why they're pushing cloud so they make more money providing the same service. They have 27,450 active clients (anyone who's renewed within the last 6 months) which is a increase of 194 from last year.
However, the last 4 months there's only been an increase of 22 active clients, about the same time they started pushing cloud exclusives. Don't think their methods are really paying off unless they're converting a bunch of people to cloud which may be the case since they're intentionally gating useful features behind cloud

Why don't you use a pre-fix with the title like: [Cloud Only] New Live Community Features!
Save all us self-hosters some time in our day...

I don't want to get into the main argument here, but I will call you out on this. The docs that you linked there are mostly general instructions for setting up a new self hosted server, not specific to Discourse. The only discourse-specific steps are:
Other than the initial bootstrap script being a CLI tool where you answer a few questions, rather than a browser-based form, this looks almost identical to the IPS setup process to me.

Matt, i think I'm also not wrong if i say that not many community platforms are cutting down features from the self hosted clients.
I know your official stance is that there are no plans to shutdown the self hosted clients, but the reality is that it seems so.
There is no single reason to make trending content exclusive to the more expensive cloud plans, besides trying to force your clients to move to the cloud. That's the only reason.

I don't believe any gaming communities outside of developer/publisher/merchandiser forums would actually be able to afford to use given the restriction to business & enterprise cloud plans

It would appear that all CSS files, (except custom.css) don't show at all, even when using the advanced editing option.

What if people want to buy it for their 4.4 or 4.5 installation? It's the only way people on older version can have this function. I see no need to remove it NOW. I understand it sucks with the price-change news and all but don't let all that get to you.
BTW you have done TONS of mods, some of which really seem that should be in IPS as core functions. You can't expect that one day these will not be implemented into IPS by the company. Instead focus on making and improving other great mods which are unlikely to be picked up by IPS: like quizzes, jobs and many others. 😉 stay positive 🙂

More than that, there are some things that don't have a functional equivalent in any WYSIWYG editor.
The comparison I would point out here is WordPress... that great bastion of using WYSIWYG, until they introduced 'shortcodes' to do things that can't conveniently be done in a WYSIWYG editor.
And if you look, it's functionally identical to bbcode, it's just not called bbcode, but lets you embed things inside posts.
While I wouldn't necessarily argue that they're needed in forum posts, the forum is not the only part of IPB that uses the same editor... where you really might want to support doing things beyond 'what you can do in a WYSIWYG editor'.

Said someone who clearly never had an Abmahnung ? Take Facebook for example: all bad press aside, FB reacted accordingly. Even a Lithuanian hosting company I do business with has responded with preemptive solutions. As well as every other company I do business with. All but one: IPS. The law is known since 2016 - we're in 2018 and theres not even a data processing agreement.
I do realize "lets see and react" is very american, but that does not help me or even pays my legal fees.
Using your resources right is very much appreciated. But don't you feel that you should assist your EU customers and provide solutions instead of a legal uncertainty? I do not expect that the check-box thingy for contact forms will emerge as the way to do things in the long run - but after this has been decided by the highest courts over here YEARS will pass. And hundreds of thousands of euros will be spent in order to reach this. I do not have 100k lying around nor the time. All while you are in risk of getting those cease and desist letters on a daily basis.
And since even government-run websites implement checkboxes these days - i'd like to be better safe than sorry.
