Davyc got a reaction from OptimusBain in Ability to set Sort By default from the menu
It would be useful to be able to set Sort By defaults from the menu options available - for example:
If I wanted to set 'Highest Rated' as default click it and then have a save button at the bottom - this way it will always be the default when access the page. Why? Because not all sort by options are available in the ACP (whether as an oversight or whatever) having the ability to do this would be a boon for everyone wanting to default to a choice of their own.

Might I make a feature suggestion?
I have SuperGrid and I also recently purchased SuperReviews. I am using them independently on different databases. However, I really like how the SuperReviews formats the Multi-image field in the record display. Is that possible to add to the SuperGrid record display as well.
My use case is that when I do reviews, I attach the photos of the interior and exterior to the review and SuperReviews does that well. But in my news database, I still need to do this for when there is a vehicle release, but with SuperGrid it appears to use the default IPS formatting.
Thank you for considering. Both plug-ins are fantastic and essential to the running of my site.

I had the same issue with my dark theme and light theme so it's easily corrected using a little bit of CSS in your custom CSS file:
.SG_record_right_with_image { background-color: #ffffff !important; color: #000000 !important; } Change the background color to whatever you want, my light theme was a white background and the text color was black. So, background changes the color of the background and color changes the color of the text.
Custom themes are a great way to enhance your eye candy, but they can throw up a few issues that need some outside the box solutions. Hope that helps 🙂
BTW @opentype your wares are brilliant and I use them regularly, fantastic work 🙂

@Matt just big thanks for your words. There are so many insights for me, so many hints between the lines. I appreciate it.

Davyc reacted to Matt in Hump Day: new live community features
We've lived through a lot in the past 20 years, so we're well versed in moving with the times and I want to make it clear that we're in a very strong position as a company due to us diversifying years ago.
In terms of self-hosting, it is just a shrinking market as shown by this graph showing self-hosted income only.
As you can see, it's roughly a quarter of what is was back in 2015 and also where we are now is not a surprise to us.
If we halved the cost of self-hosting licenses we would definitely see a bounce in sales for a short time as existing customers picked up second licenses to experiment with other community ideas and we may even pull in a few customers currently using a competitor but not completely happy with that platform but it will be a short lived bounce and not a sustainable increase over time. After a few months, it'll likely return to where we are now but with a significantly increased support burden on half the income.
This is something we're discussing for existing license holders.

The embed code is hard-coded in the post, so changing something dynamically is not easily possible. And the styling itself comes from within the iframe.

This is a hard nut to crack and get it right so that everyone benefits. There's two sides to this equation:
1) Not many people to sell to so make the price high to compensate for lack of multiple sales.
Problem: Price too high and it makes the product unattractive to all buyers other than those with deep pockets, so it can be self-defeating.
2) Not many people to sell to so make the product cheaper and more attractive to many different buyers.
Problem: If there are not enough interested parties then no matter how cheap the product is, it still won't sell, so the issue still remains self-defeating.
There are many inherent issues with both of these scenarios, not least of which is (as Matt pointed out) Social Media is the biggest draw away from forums than any other medium out there.
I feel for those who have been with Invision since the beginning and stayed loyal and who now feel as though they are being priced out, but what is the solution? In these scenarios you're damned if you do and damned if you don't; it's one of those horrible Catch-22 situations that can often be seen to be out of anyone's control. I also feel for the people who both own and work for Invision as this is their livelihood and they are seeing it slowly being eaten away and it is becoming increasingly difficult to entice people into the arena.
That's my business head speaking.
Now on the emotive side I really do feel as though the smaller guys and gals are being priced out from using Invision, but Invision are not buying and selling emotion and no amount of feeling towards sentiment will pay bills. As I started this reply with 'this is a hard nut to crack' it really is and I don't envy those having to make cold decisions to ensure survival.
If I did have a suggestion to make, it would be to bring back an affordable and flexible cloud solution. I believe, and I may be totally wrong as their are no crystal balls available to see the future, this would be beneficial to all parties.
Closing words - too cheap and you lose money, too expensive and you lose clients. A hard nut.

Yeah, it is not looking good for the Marketplace. It only still works for a handful of people, who started years ago and already have a range of products (and even they are getting fewer and fewer). But it is not attractive at all to start today. You need a $850 package to develop, test and showcase products for the entire suite. And that package isn’t the main focus anymore, so you better get a cloud package as well, but not one of the lower tiers, as they lack standard features and can’t even install custom apps …
So, you really must create some killer apps to justify those costs.

Davyc reacted to opentype in Hump Day: video streaming coming soon
There is nothing wrong with staying informed about the entire product line. After all, some admins will be interested in switching to the cloud offer, if it provides features or benefits they might want. So, they want to get that information as well. We just need to be able to easily tell which new feature applies to which plan.
-
Davyc reacted to jesuralem in Hump Day: video streaming coming soon
Seriously, what is the point of announcign this feature on this public community when it will be only available to " corporate and enterprise" cloud plan ? How many clients does IPS have on this plan ? what %age of this community members does this represent ?
Announcing features only available to a few % of your clients can only frustrate the vast majority.
-
Davyc reacted to opentype in Hump Day: video streaming coming soon
We can only skip the news, if it is indicated to whom it applies.
Scenario A:
“Streaming is coming (to enterprise plans)” I am not not on that plan, so moving on. Otherwise it will be scenario B:
“Streaming is coming!” Getting exiting. Having to research the details. Finding out to whom it applies. Being frustrated. So, it’s very much about how the news are presented.

Davyc reacted to opentype in Create a simple page with Pages that looks like the content of an article?
I really don’t understand what is going on.
For the last several years I had a $30/month package covering the entire software suite.
It was discontinued and I looked at a $54 plan, but it introduced new limitations like “no external apps”.
Just months later, that plan is gone as well, and it’s at least a $99 plan. But that again removed crucial features.
So just to keep the existing site going as it was, I would have needed to go from $30 to $169 now. That’s a price increase of over 560%! That is insane.
To be clear: I fully understand that private companies choose their market segment. They don’t owe it to the public to be cheaper, offer free service or anything like that. Not even if other products in the same field are cheaper or free.
But a company does owe something to their existing client base, especially with a company like IPS where 100% of the revenue comes from one product and therefore entirely from the existing client base.
There needs to be some kind of trust that both business partners are in a win-win partnership and that there is a willingness to keep it this way. We are your existing clients. We pay for the product, so it should be built for us and around our needs and at least somewhat around our financial abilities.
Because, at the moment, I honestly feel like an idiot if my license fees pay for the development of features today, which I will not be able to use tomorrow, because they are reserved for some higher plan for a future big corporation client. I should at least be able to keep using the product I know with roughly the same features and roughly with the same price I knew and accepted when I made the original purchase. Otherwise there is no reason to have any trust in the software provider. And even if I try to stick with the software, how am I supposed to plan for the future of current and new licenses, when price increases of over 500% can happen at any time? It’s easy to say one cares about their customers, but everything that happened since last year regarding plans and pricing betrays any such promises.

I've faced loads of issues similar to yours and the only way around it is with some imaginative CSS code added to the custom CSS file. I'd need access to your page to see what CSS is needed (not admin access, just access to the actual page) 🙂

Davyc reacted to opentype in Urgently request: Changes in "Agree with Cookies" for the regulatory authorities request
For requests like this, I would suggest to clearly state which country has such requirements, what the law is called and so on. It’s much better to judge the validity and the impact this way.

Davyc reacted to Chris Anderson in Urgently request: Changes in "Agree with Cookies" for the regulatory authorities request
@Marc Stridgen
Governmental agencies throughout the world are battling with how to protect their citizenry from bad actors near and far. Some of the protections implemented will be well thought out and some will be unmitigated disasters. Sites with minimal technical expertise and or sufficient funds to hire that expertise out will unfortunately find they won't be able to be compliant with various legal requirements. These sites will be forced to close which will begin to impact your bottom line.
As much as your customer base would like IPS to dedicate your entire programming staff to adding ever cooler features there may be value in dedicating more of your staff's time figuring out what legal requirements we will likely find ourselves having to address and see if they can be programmatically dealt with.
There may be a time in the not-too-distant future where this platform won't be able to be used in certain locales as it simply won't be economically viable to alter it by IPS or a third-party developer to be in continuous legal compliance. Can we as a community come together in partnership with IPS to minimize such occurrences.
Every site that closes will diminish the overall value proposition of the internet so it's in our collective best interest to minimize these occurrences.

Davyc reacted to iacas in Upgrade to 4.6.12 issue
@Jim M, actually this is worse than I thought when I posted the above.
I have a site at evolvr.com and it has a subscription option which I turned on via the setting in the image below:
I've had to disable that feature because it's not doing what it says: "force a purchase when registering." I've had previously subscribed (and already registered members) who should have access to some things on the forum get stuck in the "reload loop" of just being force-fed the /subscriptions/ page even though I have some open areas of the site AND they've already registered, so they should be able to see the content they created when they had a subscription… they just can't create new content.
This feature which used to "work" as expected is now what I consider to be "broken." At the best it's mislabeled - and I'm of the opinion that previously registered users shouldn't need to see only /subscriptions/ when they're returning to the site, trying to log out, etc. Nor that admins should need to be added to "subscribers" to see their own site.

Glad to see that was now resolved for you by Stuart.
For anyone else having the same issue, the problem is that you must ensure your system is asking for address in order to use location restricted payment gateways.

Situation is resolved - details are intricate so I won't go into them other than to say neither the IPS system or Skype were to blame, so all is good and other subscriptions are continuing as usual. Many thanks again for your time and help 🙂
