Very cool feature, but sadly self-hosted communities (again) are left behind. 😞
I do not like the route IPS is going...

Another scenario (and please do not laugh at me): In our community, more and more users are writing long posts without dots and commas. Sometimes it's hard to read.
When asked, they explained that they used the dictation function on their smartphones to do this. If IPS could recognize that someone entered the text using the dictation function and then a reminder about dots and commas appears, I would like that.

That would also be the case in posts. Like f**k and so on. In my use case I also would have had used this function on the word "code" or "discount code". Just a friendly reminder - nothing else. There are planty of other ways members can spread the word. A funny thing is that when I google one of the discount codes it actually comes out in google as a hit - even if I always displays codes as images - not txt.
Another use case in messages is off-corse sexual harassment of other members by PM.
Update: Thanks @Jordan Miller confirming this - we posted at the same time

Yep! This also works in messages and blog posts, among other places.

    Here is that example:

There is an underlying, more important question regarding the question whether social media promotion works:
Does guest traffic create conversions (i.e. registrations and active members) on the specific website? If yes, then creating more traffic (e.g. through social media posts) creates more conversions. If the answer is “no”, then all attempts to create more traffic are pointless. Wether it’s paid ads, social media posts, newsletters or whatever. The website must first deliver something that users would want to or even need to sign up for.

Although there are lots of settings and features built into the suite to programmatically encourage "connectivity", it takes a great deal of finesse to keep both the early adopters and those that join later "truly" connected.
If a site admin "wings it", then...

It will likely lead to a "very" bumpy ride for one-and-all.
It takes thought and experimentation to hit upon how to create an overall environment that encourages members to connect with each other at the various stages of a site's development and long-term existence.
Eliciting feedback from early adopters is important but there is no guarantee that the first cohort's personality and interests will mirror that of future members. As such, it's wise not to build-out a site utilizing their input exclusively.   One should continuously elicit input from folks that have been around for varying periods of time. When you get a handle of the needs of your overall membership new and old you will have a better sense of how to guide the community towards ever more connectivity around areas that matter to the group as a whole.
As people's interests change (and you factor in short-lived trends) a site needs to constantly figure out how to address those changing interests and possibly differences in how members engage with each other. This is especially important if a site caters to a demographic that encompasses multiple generations and geographic regions.
Adopting a top-down approach to community engagement is unlikely to work much past a site's launch. A site admin should refrain from thinking this is "my site" and instead of think of it as "our site". What should "we" do to make this site far more engaging for all of us in comparison with our competitors?  Does "our" content "engage" and "inform", and does it feel like a place to hang out and make "real" connections with others.
Instead of admins setting the tone for a site by ensuring members adhere to a complex set of community standards one might consider changing their roles to be facilitators. They could be utilized to facilitate great dialog and introduce various members to each other they think might benefit from getting to know each other and elicit great conversations.
Getting to know other members in meaningful ways may require revealing a little more about oneself than just one's screen name. Profiles with just the right kind of fields filled out can go a long way towards helping ferret out fellow members with similar interests. This is a feature that often isn't utilized to its fullest extent as the value proposition isn't properly communicated to one-and-all from my observations of this site as well as others.
I've had 12,719 profile views here but as very few other people have filled out their profiles, I've followed suite and left mine almost blank.  People appear to want to know more about other fellow members here, but IPS has chosen not to promote the use of profiles.
Being in regular contact with your entire community (not just your early adopters and power users) is important. This will better allow you to find common ground amongst your entire membership. You might have to make a special effort to draw some folks out but it's worth it in the long term.  Many new members are a bit shy at first but in time may become quite active when they reach a certain comfort level. Who knows, some of these folks might be some of your best contributors in the years to come.
Society seems to instill a strong sense of independence in the populace.  Although that has many positives there are negative aspects as well.  One being that we are often reticent of asking for help from others.
Collectively we can accomplish so much more than what we can do individually, so don't be afraid to ask for assistance from your membership to help create a "community". You might be surprised by how many folks will offer to lend a hand if it is being used in a truly useful fashion and a task can be completed in a short span of time.
@Matt made some great points above, I would recommend folks check out more of his blog postings along with Joel R and Jordan Miller.

One rule I follow, unless an advertisement is going to convert to a subscription, product purchase, etc. $$$, it's not worth it. You are better off building content and creating a facebook page/networking with groups and users. You'll end up spending a lot of money on facebook and google ads if you aren't careful, for the wrong type of visitor  just to try and grow your community. You are better off creating valuable content that organically grows your community by getting picked up by search engines because someone is looking for that exact content online. Forums will survive by offering what these giants don't. Answer the question, "what can they NOT get on facebook?" and forget building communities around "sharing stuff"...move towards a "support" style niche and you'll have a a better chance of surviving. Just my $0.02!

I would only like lazy loading if it didn't distract from viewing the site. If not done properly, like what I've seen on this site so far (looking forward to trying the fix), images telegraph themselves as they pop in, making the user notice the lazy loading rather than the content on the page.
I do see your point about bandwidth usage though. That's one of the reasons why I haven't moved my site to the cloud: the bandwidth usage costs more than all the other resources combined. For now, I stick to my dedicated server that doesn't charge for bandwidth usage while simultaneously providing 25x the speed I actually need.
How did we get here, bandwidth potentially costing hundreds more per month than a physical server? I blame ISPs, but the root cause is probably capitalism.

For me the number one reason for members to subscribe is that they get access to discount codes for one of the largest outdoorshops in my country. I have had a discountcodes since 2013 that give them 20% discount on everything in that large shop.
And then I have an agreement with the outdoorshop that I get a percentage from what all the members are buying via tracking codes.
In that way I win in both ends. Members need to see that they gain something to pay.

Glad I was able to impress you.
My point being, most users currently do NOT upload videos to IPS sites because they only show as a link and must be downloaded.  Most prefer to use a source that allows embedding, YouTube / Vimeo / etc.  By its nature, this offloads the hosting burden for videos.  This change ultimately means Administrators are going to need to be more conscience about their upload limits, allowed upload file types, and group permissions for each to ensure they either don't exceed storage limits or limit the increase in data storage and/or bandwidth usage of S3 services.  Getting more users to start using uploaded videos could have a large $$ impact on some sites if not administered carefully.

We should be able to exclude groups or users. The founder of a forum, for example, will probably have more reputation than another admin and maybe he doesn't want to appear in the leaderboard.
One example here on IPS is the IPS NEWS account! There's no sense in display it there: https://invisionpower.com/topmembers/
