My sitemap has everything in it. It's updated daily. Still I got slammed pretty good.
Years ago, I probably had 90% of my sitemap indexed. Now it's less than 10%. Nothing much has changed with the actual type of content. I've had ssl for years. And redirects from that have long since cleared.
So Google basically says most of my site isn't worthy of it's index. In the old days, it would be the other way around - 900k submitted and 850k indexed.

I don't think a special formula of sitemaps and meta tags are the ultimate fix here. It appears to just be Google deciding what's important.
The burden might just fall on the webmaster doing something their content versus Google's algorithm.
Here's a pretty decent article going into the Fred update with some ideas on what to do about it:

I’m pretty sure this has little to do with sitemaps. I process all my sitemaps each night with a simple in-house script for my 500k or so topics. It only takes a few minutes to run. I have been doing it this way for years.
All the links show up in Google as being in the sitemap. But about a year ago, Google started dropping them from the index by the hundreds of thousands. Also my home page key words used to be in the top 3 at Google, now they've been lowered into obscurity. It’s not blacklisted. Some links are still there but just not ranking.
Yet, if I post something on YouTube or set up an empty store on a popular ecommerce site, all of a sudden those links are up at the top of some search results. So, it may just be Google on yet another new algorithm deciding who gets to see what.

Watch your billing.  As I mentioned, S3 storage is super cheap but the bandwidth costs to your CDN will be expensive.

No that wouldn't be possible. The "thousands separator" is hard coded in IPB4 itself. To basically use what ever the default is for the language being used.
See the "formatNumber" function in system/Lang/Lang.php.

I'm so excited you took my post about Bing seriously! I bet someone at Microsoft employed to monitor references to Bing in social media/forums is super happy right now. Being taken seriously rarely happens with Bing.

I don't want to be a bearer of bad news either, but I have had HTTPS set in my Google search console for quite some time since I went to HTTPS early back in the day. But still whatever has changed has dropped me from Google's search results from #1 for my forums name to about page 7 or 8 in Google's search results. Almost completely removed me now. I haven't changed anything either. This last week I tried replacing my robots.txt to something new hoping anything would make a difference. Just grasping at straws here now. Hoping 4.3 comes out soon and it fixes things. I am at a loss here.

I think we need to be mindful the the sitemap is just one way that Google discovers and crawls links.
What goes in the sitemap isn't a hard rule that Google must only check out those links, so there's little point in adding too many restrictions here and there because it'll be mostly pointless. You'll submit fewer links, but Google will still pull up the ones you didn't add.
I did add a setting for profiles, because of the huge number of 'dead' profiles that stuff up the sitemap, which is just a waste.

What may or may not be in the sitemap doesn't solve why Google is shedding indexed pages.
That said, when using the new search console, the figures are totally different.
    We have 92k indexed pages
We have about 400k pages that Google has either 'discovered' or 'crawled but not indexed' due to its own algorithms. These are 301 redirect links (this is OK, it has no reason to store these) and empty profiles which have almost zero content.
But it's important to realise that Google is not punishing us, it is just working harder to index content that it thinks others will find useful, and "Johnny@11" who registered in 2011 and has never posted doesn't count any more.

Just so you know, we're watching this topic and looking at our own stats to build a better picture.
    The facts we know:
    1) Almost every site I've got access to (via friends, etc) have seen a massive drop since June of indexed pages. This is not exclusive to Invision Community powered sites. I've seen the same with Wordpress.
    2) Google slipped in an update in 2017 to target several things, one of these things is poor backlinks and other poor quality links. It looks like this means that user profiles that have no content have been dropped from the index along with links that 301. That is fine. You don't want Google storing the 301 link, as long as it stores the real link (and it does seem to).
    3) A drop in what is indexed doesn't actually correlate to the health of the site. We've seen our index volume drop, but clicks, engagement and discovery slightly increase (probably due to better quality results?)
As always, Google say nothing so we're left guessing.
We will look at stopping user profiles from being submitted. For example, we see nearly 380k links as 'discovered' but Google has chosen to not index them. Looking through the list, it's all user profiles.
    This means:
    1) Sitemaps are working fine. There's no massive problem with them that correlates with a drop in indexed pages
    2) The cornerstones of good SEO are taken care of in the software
    3) Google is being weird and mysterious as always.
What can we do in the short term?
    1) Stop sending profiles with no content to the sitemap. They are now ignored and Google appears to be dropping them from its indexes
    2) Add in nofollow on links that 301 so Google doesn't bother 'discovering' them at all.

    So many misconceptions.
If @daveoh were to share his site, you would see it's very clean, well organized, has high quality content and a glance shows his backlink profile is strong. He also has little to no apparent ads.
@Nesa while I understand your concerns and understand your frustration, the sitemap itself is not the cause of your issues. This was posted earlier today and was already indexed by Google hours ago. I've checked some of our larger enterprise sites and their content from today is also being indexed in a timely fashion. I just searched the topic you referenced and it too is listed. There's no magic bullet in 4.3 or even other software that's going to put you on the front page of Google or instantaneously push new content directly to Google.
The big algorithm update of 2017 targeted a lot of sites with some losing as much as 90% of their traffic. Some of these sites flew under the radar with what Google considers low quality content and in Google's eyes, they were righting the scale. There are many factors that influence your position in Google, your index rate and frankly, whether or not Google just likes or hates you.
    Ads
If your site has ads that detract from the user experience and content on your site, Google WILL penalize you and that was the single most biggest hit in the "Fred" update. An ad in the header and footer are ok. An affiliate link or "sponsored content" that is appropriately placed and blends with content is ok. Ads all over the page and in the sidebar are obnoxious to users and Google agrees and doesn't want to subject us to it (for which I'm, as a user, appreciative.)
    Backlinks
Backlinks can account for up to 1/3 of your overall standing with Google -- that is, quality backlinks; not "hey, link to me and I'll link you back."
    Content Freshness/Quality
You may very well have 15 million posts, but if they're all from 2003 and you get very little new content, your old content is going to have less value to Google and they may drop it. Keep it fresh, keep users engaged.
Google has gotten very intelligent and can distinguish rehashing the same musings over fresh information. General discussion sites with loose/generic content won't likely fare as well as those with unique, relevant content. Pages with thin content (such as picture threads, a bunch of "lols", etc.) are likely to get hit by Google.

Again, Google cleaned house in 2017 - many sites got hit, including those using Wordpress, vB, etc. There's just too many variables to get all up in arms over one component: a sitemap. A sitemap, even the complete absence of a sitemap is not going to cause your indexed pages to drop. If this has happened to you, it's because Google penalized you and dropped your content. A sitemap is also not a magic wand and Google will not consider it the be-all for indexed content. A sitemap is a good gap filler and provides Google additional insight, but most content is still indexed organically through links.
4.3 will provide for the mentioned improvements to the sitemap. Given 4.3 is so close, I'm sorry, but it would not be worth re-engineering those improvements for 4.2 and again, it's not going to be the magic solution you believe it to be. Unfortunately, I can only suggest focusing on the above list as one or more of those items is the likely culprit for your site being dropped.

I have asked some people that use other forum software about their index, and here are two examples:

So, this must be something with Invision, because in other sites using other bulletin software, its rising and not declining.

Because there are indeed improvements to the sitemap to be made. But not having them so far is NOT the reason for pages dropped from the index. That was just a false assumption of a single user who joined the discussion. Correlation is not causation.

And you still don’t. The sitemap creation speed discussed in this topic is NOT the reason Google drops your pages. It’s literally makes no sense to draw that conclusion.

Basically you are now tuned into believing IPS has an SEO problem, so you are seeing 'evidence' of that everywhere, whereas you are not really active over at xenForo so you do not notice the issues they may (or may not have).

No same visitors as always, we have our regulars. My site is not a large forum with tons and tons of people. It's been around for a long time though and always sat at number one spot for many years, then out of the blue at the end of last year, it starts to drop off Google all together. No decrease in regulars etc. Just strange, then I run across this thread and I thought maybe it was related like everyone else did.But I am sure it is like @Matt said, it's just the new way of Google handling things I guess.
