  1. I originally said the same thing about chat running in new window I must admit :)

I then realized that I could just open a new window myself.

True - but not as good as a window with no header/footer etc. ;)

Could also do with a collapsible Online Chat Users

When we had a chat room before - our biggest request/complaint was that people could not run it in a narrow floating window.

Would happily pay for this in the enhanced version.
  2. Nope the upgrade is 'free' - but when your support subscription ends you have to pay $175 to get it renewed to either get support or updates.

Or you can pay $130 until end of September to upgrade to the suite.

After September it is $250 for the suite or $175 for forums only.

Not exactly what I call free ;)

  3. There is no real value in an old style vb licence as too many are selling them.

I have them to sell and they are not worth a lot.

I would rather convert mine to IPB and put all my forums under the one software product.

With such a discount, I could move them over.

At the moment it is $130 to upgrade to the VB suite or $249 to convert to a similar offering here or $299 for the full works (current offer).

  4. I have some great ideas for features. Here they are:

    1. In the online users list, the user names should be linked to the user's profile and in the color of their member group.

    2. Users with administrator access or users with chat mod access should be in a separate area on the top of the list. This way, they are publicly marked as chat moderators so everyone knows who's who.

    3. Chat mods should be able to login to the chat and remain invisible until they choose to show themselves.

    4. Mods can "mute" a user by preventing them from chatting for a certain amount of time or indefinitely.

    5. Mods can ban a user from the room once or for any amount of time.

    6. Moderator features and options can be viewed in an ajax box.

    7. Users can private message others inside the chat. This is simply a private conversation (it can be recorded of the user ops for it) between two users.

    8. On the sidebar on the forums, there should be a list of everyone currently in the chat room. (Admins can turn on or off this feature)

    9. Admins should be able to set a title for the chat room, a general message that users see upon entering it, and send messages at any time during the chat.

    10. Admins can setup multiple chat rooms. The chat rooms can have a cap on the number of users inside of it and can be password protected.

These are all the feature suggestions I have at the moment. I'll post more when I think of some.

All good ideas - the ability to have a 'who's chatting' on the sidebar would really encourage chatters. If the admin has multiple rooms then, it would be good if a user could pick their favourite room and see who is chatting in their favourite room.

  5. Every single spammer that I get seems to have a gmail account.

They all post about dvd converters etc.

I would love a way to restrict people that come from gmail accounts. I do not really wish to ban them, otherwise I risk blocking genuine users.

Sadly the built in spam software never picks up these people and always marks them as probably not spam.

    Thanks.

  6. Don't use the software to do anything illegal. That's about the extent of our restrictions.

Just for clarification - is that illegal where Invision Power are registered or where the user is.

Not trying to be awkward, but this was a topic on some other forum software yesterday and got quite heated - so might be worth clarifying.

With laws varying around the globe, it could be confusing.

    Thanks.

  7. Thanks for all the replies, you guys truly are quite helpful here :)

So much better than the crap you get (or just being ignored) over at vB.com and vB.org.

Hmmm... go away - we do not want you to discover the wonders of IPB ;)

On second thoughts maybe I should have ignored you. ;)

In seriousness - you can't go far wrong here - there will always be bits missing in any product, my members love display names for example - but VB have always shunned them, but IPB has them so my folks are happy, whereas VB has bits like similar topics IPB has the ability to use Sphinx built in.

For me, it was the way that the staff here dealt with my initial requests and conversion. I had a similar enquiry at VB and in the end it was a much poorer attitude from VB to the same questions & I had test conversions running from both. VB were dismissive of errors I was getting. IPB solved the errors.
  8. Not every feature will be available in IPB and vice-versa. People need to have a balanced picture when choosing forum software.

You need to not only look at the annual cost (always work on permanent membership), but you need to look at phone support (if required), features that your members already use and can't live without, features which are new in the forum software you are looking at (that might compensate them for any lost features). Look at conversion costs, installation costs.

IPB will not be right for everybody - but it will be for many.

Look at the responses of staff - are they reasonable, do they appear pationate about the company they represent? Are fellow members quick to help and recommend? Do you get the truth even if that means 'sorry we are not the best option for you'?

Look at all options and then decide.

Some costs will be zero at IPB and others will cost - some costs maybe higher or lower than your current product - but weigh everything up. And if IPB can offer a refugee discount take this into account.

I am not going to bash any other product here, as I hold licences for UBB, VB, FusionBB & IPB. and would gladly move some of those sites here - so for me it is not just a VB issue, but if I can move more sites towards IPB then great - and I know I am not alone. I recognise several posts in the members section of different forum software.

Worth also mentioning that IPB have a business version - same product but comes with phone support and installation of not only the first install, but also upgrades plus a faster guaranteed response time on tickets. This might be suitable for busy sites, that perhaps require a greater link between you and Invision and are run as a business rather than a hobby.

I have been involved in forums for over a decade, so speak from experience - if I am not happy I say so and would not recommend s product that I was not prepared to sue myself.

Make your decision and if it is right for you and your members go for it.

  9. Even better! Nice idea Ian! But the only problem is, how does IPS gauge who actually has vBulletin?

Simple - supply a copy of the receipt from IB to get the discount code.

I had to do this to get a discount when buying some software for selling domains/hosting.

  10. However if they are not resolved then we cannot open them.

Annoying see the words resolved when they are not.

If we need to collect further information on a problem, this can sometimes take longer due to weekends etc., waiting on the response of a third party etc. Because I was ill with swine flu my tickets were auto-closed without me having a chance to respond.

Frustrating having to create new tickets for each issue.
