TracyIsland reacted to Dreadknux in Suggestion for Our Picks / Featured Content in V5: 'User Submission'
I think I made a feature topic about Our Picks before, but I had this brainwave and wanted to share another idea.
It would be great to allow community members to 'suggest' content for promotion onto the Our Picks (or Featured, or whatever it's going to be called in V5) page. They could click a button saying "I loved this! Suggest for Promotion" or something, and a dialog could appear with a text field asking why they liked it and why they want it to be shown on the front page (so others may see it). These submissions could be collected into the ModCP and mods/admins could consider them for inclusion - if so, they can tweak a suggested headline and body copy much like they can with the current promote system.
They could also choose/create a Category for the Featured content to sit within (this is related to a past feature idea I had in the last topic I made - Our Picks should have the functionality for 'categories' so that mods/admins can promote content to certain 'buckets' that can be used as a filter when displaying on a custom homepage).
Reason why I think this might be good, is for large communities with a lot of content. Sometimes it can be difficult for just mods/admins to find and promote good content they see, if there are a lot of clubs/forums/pages etc to work through. And it would allow users to feel like they are helping to contribute to a community that they love.

TracyIsland got a reaction from Marc Stridgen in Our Picks Not Working
Follow up - all tasks show as never run. I ran the task for promote and sure enough, the our picks populated.
I would guess that the developer disabled the tasks so that the members weren't notified with any testing.

We do this on our one community. We have a group called "Former Members" for those who want to make it known that they have left.

Thanks so much for the monosnap lead. I just downloaded it and created a test video tutorial. The .mp4 file format instantly came alive after dragging the video file into the post.

Just to help further here...
Assuming that you actually dragged a file and not a link to the file hosted somewhere else, then that should be enough.
But the problem is that your browser needs to be able to support the playback of .wmv files in the <video> tag - otherwise, it will display the fallback link which would explain this:
Screen capture is something I was toying with for this resource https://www.ynwa.tv/files/file/18-ne-media-recorder/ but didn't see a market for it.
If you are Cloud hosted, the 'Team' level will likely assist you with your main issue:

I use Monosnap for Screen Captures.
https://monosnap.com
For Video, it uses mp4 format, which is compatible with most browsers.

That's controlled by your group settings. Admin CP > Members > Groups. Edit your group, and adjust the upload limits under the Content tab.

No.. Jim's post is correct. He just doesn't specify that some video formats may not embed in all browsers when attached. If you take a look at our v5 announcements, you'll notice that all videos except for the "main announcement" are .mp4 files which have been uploaded as attachments to the post.
Browsers are quite picky with video formats. For example, .mov works fine in Safari, but fails in other browsers, and .wmv has never been supported in the <video> tag. This has always been the case, and nothing has changed in our software since Jims post. For the widest support, .mp4 is suggested.

TracyIsland reacted to opentype in v5 news coming soon...
Improvements are nice, but my main concern is maintaining existing projects. I would want to know everything that is not possible anymore and learn if there are alternative ways. This includes hacky solutions like putting a MySQL query in a theme template and things like that. I have lots of customized installations and I don’t want them to be stuck with 4.x.

Got it. I was also a moderator but I had to change the restricted moderator settings on my profile.
Thank you for the clarification and education!

There's no "superadmin" on IPS4. Admin is a member who can perform actions in ACP. Moderator is a member who can perform action in front end. A user can be a moderator and not be an admin as the user can also be an admin and not be an moderator. It depends on how you set permissions... That's why you have a ADMINISTRATORS and MODERATORS separated page on ACP.
Again, you need to be a MODERATOR, and not ADMIN, to move things on front end.

TracyIsland reacted to Nakamura RTS in Add Scheduled Bulk Emails Please
Bulk emails are a fantastic feature that allows you to communicate news and other important stuff to your community - allowing you to target specific subsets of folk too.
The addition of scheduled topics is fantastic, but this function doesn't yet exist for bulk emails. Is this something that the team is already considering?
It would be super practical if I could write something up in the evening and send it out at peak hours next day without having to log in, paste the content, and click the button myself at the right time.

TracyIsland got a reaction from Markus Jung in Feedback about the new search bar
I have marked agree on most of the pushback replies above. As an administrator who knows his way around this 4.7.2 version, at least in a general sense, I find myself continuously using Google search for marketplace items or help topics about different aspects of IPS 4.7.2. If I use the search bar provided, more often than not I don't get any useful results.
Here is a specific example: as I prepare for my upgrade to 4.7 from 3.3.4, I wonder if I can add or change the like button choices, currently offering agree-like-haha-meow-thanks. Some of you know the exact term for that button but I don't - at least not yet. If I search 'change like button,' I don't get anything useful. My reaction? Try different search phrases on Google. It will be faster and more efficient.

I agree. People are used to Google or YouTube. They just type something in and expect to get relevant results.

TracyIsland reacted to Hisashi in Feedback about the new search bar
Hello,
I'm starting to get used to the simplicity of the new search bar, but there's one thing that bothers me, although it's not a problem.
Desktop users are having a bit of a hard time searching because they aren't paying attention when selecting the location of content.
They end up not having a good search experience, due to a simple lack of attention. And it gets worse when your theme is dark.
Sometimes the user is looking for a video, but is in another app and ends up being filtered automatically.
How to solve this?
Make the menu appear automatically when clicking on search bar, as it was in past.
So the user will quickly know where to look for your content.

TracyIsland reacted to Markus Jung in Feedback about the new search bar
Or (and in my opinion even better) make it default to search everywhere. If you get too many results, you can then narrow the search in the next step.

TracyIsland reacted to Davyc in Feedback about the new search bar
Which is why I used the Google search as an example - the tool is there but people don't look at it. So the 'reading' in general argument you are using is based on your own opinion. In the 'real world' people tend to have tunnel vision and only see what they want to see, not necessarily what's there; hence the example of the google search. I wasn't attempting to say that Google search was better, simply pointing out that people don't see the tools available.
Once you start 'guessing' that a user will want to search anywhere but in general, then problems will arise. I'm not saying that the new search is 'bad' but it is flawed by making assumptions on behalf of a user. An example would be, if I search for something and a topic is flagged that I 'may' be interested in but isn't what I'm looking for, why in the world would I want to search that topic? The system makes that assumption, and also assumes that the user is 'aware' that a filter has been applied. Considering all of these factors when the user goes to search for something else, they would need to remove the filter that they may not be aware of. Filters should be a user decision, not a system decision. So, it would be of benefit to have those filters highlighted in an unmistakable manner so the user is aware of them. Now this 'does' occur in mobile view and a drop down of filters is shown so the user is 'aware' of them.
When I first updated to 4.7.1 and I went to search for a movie on my own site that I knew was there but didn't want to go on a hunt for amongst hundreds of others, I typed the name in the search box - zero results. With some investigation I discovered that because my home page was a Pages page, the search 'assumed' I wanted to search Pages. I had to download a plugin to remove Pages from the search to make sure that my visitors were able to search my entire site and not something the system assumed I wanted to search. Would they actually have known what Pages was if they did see it in the search bar? Would they understand that this was a filter, or something that the way the search bar was designed?
The best way out of this situation is to allow admins to default the search to 'Everywhere' until a user decides to apply a filter. If others want to use the new method then that option should be there too. It would save a lot of pointless debates about theories and opinions that may or may not be valid 🙂

TracyIsland reacted to Chris027 in Feedback about the new search bar
I think the real solution to this is to give us the flexibility to set it how it best fits our communities. One size never fits all.
-
TracyIsland reacted to Chris027 in Feedback about the new search bar
One additional follow up comment on this after using it for a couple weeks.
I hate it and it makes no sense to me. When people in my community search for something, they couldn't care less which part of the site it comes from. they want information about the topic of the search. Plus, they have no clue that my platform, IPS, has different sections titled Pages, Topics, etc...
We need the ability to tailor this search bar to our own needs.

Possibly this one...
But more likely that videos are disabled on demos.

TracyIsland got a reaction from Ibai in tag members in images
In addition to the tags features for images, would it be possible to add a member tagging for the Gallery? Something like @Jordan if someone uploads a selfie they took of Jordan and he/she/they?
