    @Askancy, for my forums i've created additional structure with short urls which are good for sharing.

    For example, instead of this url:

    You can easily make something like this and don't transliterate UTF-8 words, as their presence in URL is better for SEO than transliterated text.

    SendGrid's shared IP pool is being blacklisted at an increasing amount of places. It's no longer a great place for deliverability.

    I appreciate the feedback here. We're listening as always.

    My only request is that we keep it polite. We don't need to scream in each other's faces to be heard. If we don't reply or action the feedback immediately, it isn't because we disagree, or are ignoring what you're saying; it's more likely that we need to consider every change as a team and this takes time.

    I’m not sure where you heard this but we do not have plans to discontinue custom buttons.

    I recall that they introduced a custom theme a few years back, and then informed their members that they weren't going to make it downloadable because so much work had gone into making it. The nerve!

    Nothing - I make my sites because I am passionate about something I want to share with others.  I try something, it if works it sticks, if not it goes, and I try something else.  I don't want other people to fund my endeavours, so I make nothing but ultimately, I lose too.  But that doesn't matter because it's what I do.  I know other people monetize their sites and if they can make something from them, that's great.  Everyone makes their own choices as to what to do, what to dip into and what they're prepared to do to see their vision become a reality.
    In this day, it's virtually impossible to get traction on a new site starting up - that's just the reality of the world we live in; people want instant gratification and forums don't give them that.  People have to be prepared to invest some time in a site to make it into something that the author intended.  We have to try, because if we don't then sites and businesses like this would vanish.  So, my pennies go toward what I envision and Invision get something back from my vision and I get the enjoyment from being creative.
    Good luck to all who wish to make a living from forums, and good on those who have done for a while, I hope your wheels keep turning 🙂

    I don't have a problem with calling this aspect of the design "terrible" because it is.
    The previous version had the follow button on the same level as the Forum title.
    Somebody made the "terrible" decision to move this button into acres of precious vertical space, all on its own. What was wrong with leaving it where it was? Why is this necessary? If it had to be moved below the title as an essential button then why not place it beside the start topic button?
    Or if a follow button is of such paramount importance to be a leading feature for the landing page, why not go full width?
    You've probably all heard of the "hero image" ... welcome to its successor, the "hero button"

    The latest Tapatalk 1.6.6. broke 3 of my forums on 4.1.10 with a blank white page, had to disable. 4 other sites I checked were fine. I'm going to move to IPS's app once I upgrade and if they ever come out with a white label option, I may do that as well, depending on the cost.

    Yes, it’s my assessment that this layout is well-thought-out. (The one I commented, which was from Pages)
    I work as professional web designer for more than 20 years and I customize these Pages templates all the time—inspecting every little detail, checking the flow of content in many situations and at every CSS breakpoint. 
    Of course if you can’t have an open discussion and need to laugh at people just because they say something you don’t agree with, this discussion ends right here. If all you guys can do is judge a web layout in one desktop view, you know very little of web design and have a lot to learn, but with reactions like the one I quoted you are apparently not willing to. I am out.

    Choice in a marketplace is a great thing. It pushes all to do better.

    Hi and welcome to our new series of updates for our contributors.
    We'll highlight the most common mistakes, ways to resolve them and also generic improvement suggestions once a month here:)
     
    As first, I want to apologies that some files took really long to get approved, but we really expected that new submissions and upgrades would have a better quality, but unfortunately >60% of the submissions ( 90% in the first week) were still not following the new marketplace guidelines, which resulted in a devils circle.
     
    Let's recap the last months issues resulting in rejections🙂
    Core Database changes. Version details not changed. Usage of existing IPS error codes in your own code. Usage of \IPS\ROOT_PATH in your code.
    See 4.5 dev changes Upgrade steps trying to process too many data.
    Please try to process data from huge tables in batches instead of iterating over such a big datasource in one step.  
    We're also seeing a huge trend in extra queries and extra joins, which are unnecessary most of the time, please don't be lazy and try to use your common sense and ask yourself what's the preferred solution in this case? A global join each time the object is initialized?  A second query when the object is initialized? Lazy load the data when needed?
    Last but not least, please avoid altering the Groups database table! While we allowed this in the past,  we see a big trend that many developers already use own tables and logic for this too, which works really great. Because of this we'll start to be more strict here, so starting tomorrow any new submissions will have to follow this rule too!

    Good to see you around, Tiger. That is very... passionate feedback on the URL reset fee. Although it's been addressed before, I'm happy to do so again. 
    Firstly, prior to limiting the resets, it was very easy to "license hop" - that is, swap URLs around, obtain support, upgrades, etc., swap them around and repeat, etc. So, while not necessarily the original intended purpose, it does help keep the honest... honest in the same sort of way that a deadbolt keeps the undetermined at bay--obviously, the determined/committed can kick the door in. 
    Secondly, in many cases, there actually are costs incurred with fresh installations by way of support. Frequent URL resets are a byproduct of tossing ideas around, deleting, reinstalling, configuring and deleting. Quite often, there are numerous support requests involved and unfortunately, often the same questions/concerns over and over again on each reinstall. The spirit of tech support provided is based on a single installation and not so much to support 'tinkering' and perpetual reinstallation support. The fee, when applied, helps (in a small way) offset some of that overhead.
    I would hope a number of customers here would attest to the fact that we will generally just update the URL for you if you contact us - especially if you're just changing the URL on an existing installation. In cases such as those described above, the fee may apply. 
    I'm sorry you consider it a barrier, but I can assure you, we're not funding private yachts from license reset fees. 🙂 Even with license reset fees, we frankly still typically tend to have a net loss when it comes to many of those (not all, but many) that kind of toss ideas out to see what sticks. You've been around a long time (for which we're appreciative!) - you're a power user (who still sees us as a 'forum provider') and you won't likely require much support throughout your tinkering journey. That's not usually the case here. 
    Just drop us a note if you find you need to change the URL on file. We're generally able to help if that's all you need.

    Facebook do make it tricky by constantly changing permissions required and adding new requirements. We'll do our best to keep it up to date, but we are always exploring simpler ways via third parties to publish content to social media channels.

    I have a forum since 2002, running IPB since the beginning, 18 straight years running.
    https://forumusica.com, it's a community of portuguese musicians. It became, and still is, the largest musician community online in the country.
    It has been quite a journey, with many bumps on the road, including members leaving in disagreement with the rules and creating competing foruns (most of them already died after some time) and flame wars between musicians and bands. There was a funny story when in 2007 someone created a precisely equal forum! In 2013 the forum was 1 month down due to "admin team problems". Quite a journey, i would said.
    It had a boom from 2005 till 2009, then facebook started killing everything around and it suffered a lot. Since 2018 facebook privacy crisis it had gradually rebounded. The forum was always geared towards rock musicians, unfortunately now hip hop is trending, so we don't get as many new members as we used to get in the past. I could "switch" the focus hip hop to get more users, but then i would loose the rock user niche. As i am also geared towards rock, is also a personal preference. In 2013 i've decided to use IP Pages (IP Content) at the time and create some features to allow people to sell stuff and find other musicians. That helped greatly the forum to survive, because it provided additional value to users.
    You need a lot of passion to get a "pure" forum running, an interested community and... keep your feet on the ground, because this is a very challenging
    From 1000 people that visit your forum, 100 will get registered,  From these 100, 10 will post From these 10, 1 will become regular poster for years People's interests change with time and after some time they will just quit posting This means means you should focus on acquiring users, because it allows continuous renewal of the user base.
    Besides that: 
    People seldom care about creating content for others, the great majority just want to satisfy their own interests. Everyone is like that, including myself. It's just human nature and you can't change human nature. If you have something valuable to offer them, they will get it and go away. They will keep visiting if you continuously offer value to them. The question for forum longevity is how you get them giving back value to you and other users. Nowadays i am planning another community, yet 18 years later, it will surely be very different, because things changed a lot... content is now the king, as visuals are. Presenting an empty forum expecting that people join it and create content is just not realistic anymore.

    I like the idea. I can develop a “purchase ticket to events” so nothing of crazy ideas with 10 steps, just a BUY TICKET in the event view then it’s done. 😀

    For every Commerce product there is a field you can fill, which will be visible to the customers in client area. You could use that to give the link to the stream. 
    However, people might struggle to find that without further instructions. 
    If the events aren’t too frequent, I second Paul’s suggestion that you could use temporary member group promotions. If your paying customers are in special secondary group, you can show them blocks, pages, menu entries and so on. You could probably design an entire streaming page just for this member group, which sounds like a good(-looking) solution.

    The sites are being approved and are usable already. There is a search bar and a category overview to browse the communities.
