  1. Where can I download version 4.1 or 4.2? I'm running ipb 4.2 but upgrading from 3.4.
  2. Just installed this on my site after seeing it on Michael Maccune's site. One cool mod indeed! I have a question: I do have a custom profile field where I ask users to provide their city and country. I've noticed that in Michael's page, my name appeared on the map despite the fact that I don't quite recall ever having added my location there. Has anybody managed add a custom profile field with location to the map yet?
  3. Is there a demo or a large screenshot somewhere?
  4. I agree that few people use them, there's no question about it. But one has to think why that is so. Whilst it is true that many forum admins will not find them useful, it is also true that admins have never really thought about the possibilities that post icons do offer. There isn't a culture because both invision and Vbulletin never really took the matter seriously, only some coders did. In fact, the (wrongly called) "post icons" which invision includes by default are just about the same many other forum software provide, some smileys and the question mark and little more. That shows that not much thought has ever gone into it... I mean, can you call a happy smiley a topic icon? Can you call a sad smiley a topic icon? absolutely not! they have never been post icons!! basic mood icons. Nobody has ever wanted to use them. I never used them either!! Although tags can improve that, they cannot possibly replace a quick identification of a topic with an image. In a few years, many people are going to be using touch screens at home also, and dragging post icons might gain their momentum for the first time... We can't rely on text all the time. There's too much text around!
  5. Bfbarber is absolutely right, if this is ipb's biggest mistake, invision isn't doing so bad. I never said it was. I love invision and I've been a faithful customer since Matt coded Ikonboard, which I used also. :) Just because I'm critical of one aspect of ipb doesn't mean I hate the product! :) I agree with you in part, t.o.b.r: at least some people now know that post icons EXIST and that you can do some pretty awesome stuff with them, and they don't have to be mood icons! ;)
  6. Let me think, this is a tough one! :D Don't post icons appear in the lower part of the screen? You don't have to scroll anything if you don't want to use them mate! You have a little button which reads "configure" post icons if you want to use icons, if you don't want to use icons, you don't have to click on it and then you'd see nothing. Perhaps you hadn't seen it? ;) And who says you have to use my post icons? why would you want to? you dont have to. And you can use 1 Or you can use 10 Or you can use none. It's up to you. It's called "flexibility". By the way, luckily, in the rest of the world, we sort out our differences without having to resort to guns. Give peace a chance, mate! ;)
  7. Yes, that's a hack. Well, that's basically the whole point of having post icons, they give you flexibility. In the scenario which you describe, sure, it makes perfect sense. But communities are very complex, and sometimes an admin simply can't create as many different sub-forums as there are topic classifications. For example, think of a soccer forum. It has subofrums on the different international leagues (premier, la liga, Dutch, French, ITalian... you name it.) So, ok, one subforum for each one. Then What are you gonna do, create a subforum for each one of the teams?? how many subforums are you gonna have? :) Ideally, if post icons were enhanced rather than depricated, and admin should be able to set up a different set of post icons for different subforums. Think of a post icon as a "tag". Users should be able to perform searches using the different tags (or different post icons). In other words, make post icons searchable fields. In my case, it's something I care about, so worth the effort. (and I learned how to use Snag it along the way :) ) But that's one of the points of a post icon, not having to read thru all the topic titles... and us admins have to do that hundreds of times a day.... it gets tiring. But I also don't like the idea of having the options of what I can do with software cut down, I expected the opposite, more flexiblity... Forum icons have never taken off because forum designers have never really given them enough thought. I've been following this matter closely with other forum software, and for something like 5 years, they have never introduced any changes: all the same, same old boring post (mood!) icons. Some have copied each other. It's no wonder people don't use them: they've never been what they were supposed to be, so it hasn't triggered the imagination of web admins, they've always been "basic mood icons". It is in that case. I too can come up with many cases where it would be pointless. But that's the thing: you're cutting down on the options of some admins who DO have a need for it. Say a forum on the premier league, post icons for all the different teams (I follow Liverpool, by the way! :D ). I'm not really interested in a post about what goes on in Manchester United...
  8. Yes, of course they are, but in IPB 3 they don't appear in the topic list when you post a topic like they did in ipb 2.3x. because they're being deprecated.
  9. Ian, it's true that people don't use them, but the reason is they're not really post icons: they're mood icons, there are only 14 of them and they don't add any additional information to a thread. However, if you add your own post icons (and that's the whole point, they can be very useful) Mat, "post icons being deprecated" is not something I made up, it's an answer I got from one of Invision's admins. Your pathetic answer demonstrates that you didn't understand a single thing about the video. :D Post icons are still there, yes, but in IPB 3, they do not appear on the topic list when you post a topic unless you modify a couple of .php files, and the fact remains the invision has said so already, they don't think it's a useful feature. As for choosing youtube or not, you do what you wish mate, I'll keep doing what I want. Got any problem with that? ;)
  10. Want to know about what I think is possibly one of invision's biggest mistakes ever? watch the video! Note: Sorry about the english, it's not my first language. :)
