New: Gallery improvements

This is an entry about our IPS Community Suite 4.2 release

We are happy to introduce several changes to our Gallery application to both refine the existing capabilities and to introduce new useful functionality; particularly for Albums.

We have clarified how to submit images directly to a category on the first step of the upload form in Gallery.

Clarification for submitting directly to a category

When submitting images to the Gallery, a simple "Add more images" button has been added to the wizard. While it has always been possible to add more images by dragging and dropping them on to the upload area, or by clicking the "Choose files" button again, the addition of this button should help add some clarity for users who overlooked these capabilities.

A new "Add more images" button makes adding additional images easier

Applying the same details to all of the images you are submitting has been made much simpler. When you begin entering the details for the first image, you can specify a template to use for the caption name leveraging a special replacement "%n". A small help icon next to the caption field label explains how to use this capability. When you are done supplying the details, you can click "Copy details to all images" and your submission will start instantly, using all of the details supplied for the image you are editing. You can quickly set tags, an image description and a caption name template (for instance "Aquarium %n") to all images using this new capability, useful when submitting 50+ images at once. Of course, you can still supply the details for each individual image as well, if you wish.

Submitting a lot of images at once has been made easier

In addition to improvements for submitting images, albums have been updated to include many new features, including:

  • Commenting
  • Reviews
  • Reactions
  • Messages
  • Featuring
  • Hiding
  • Locking
  • Reporting
  • Searching

A new Gallery widget (sidebar block) to show albums anywhere throughout the Community Suite has been added as well.

Album overview page

Going along with these changes, we've improved how groups of images that are submitted to an album are handled in searches. If you submit multiple images to an album, you will only see the album listed in activity streams, and similarly if you follow a bunch of images in an album these are grouped as well, making activity streams more useful and easier to follow.

Activity streams have been updated as well

The changes to albums and image submissions will simplify your users' interaction with Gallery in 4.2, and make submitting images and new albums, and working with those albums more useful and robust.

Nice additions, appreciated effort.

I dont know about you guys, but viewing IP gallery pictures is not the best experience. Mostly when pictures are taken in big resolution and monitor simply resizes the photo to fit in the screen. Thus you can miss a lot of details unless you lick on view full size and open a new window. Thats very irritating.

Why wont you consider opening pictures just like here? https://www.skelbiu.lt/skelbimai/canyon-grandcanyon-al-6-9-10kg-27785509.html

Dont be scared of not english language, but just lick once on the picture on the right and once again when it is displayed already in full. you can scroll up and down to see in full detail. What do you guys think?

Please have an option to leave the caption blank and not use file names so that a user is forced to add some sort of text. Too many people never change what is automatically populated.

oh yes!! Gallery is full of default nonsensical exif image data when uploader does not bother to change image name. but then again, how would the picture be searchable at all?

I am really hoping this is just a "hint" of the new features for Gallery.

These are pretty substantive changes, relative to the other apps. So I'm very thankful that they've done this much already. But I agree there are some larger overhauls that need to be done on one of the most popular apps in the suite.

@bfarber, a common request is add a RANDOM option to the image widgets. Will this be added in 4.2?

Yes please.

Random images in gallery block.

There is a sorting issue - If that can also be resolved... say if I have images name 1 to 15    it is shown as   1 , 10, 11, 15   then 2 , 3 ...

https://mechanical-engg.com/gallery/album/283-vocabulary-car-parts-give-caption-to-each-image-and-write-description/

Additionally  n new feature.... if Adsense / adverts position can also be looked upon

Can we create a new Album / add Images to an Album when I create a new Topic/Post in forum?

Yes, or any other integration that somehow allows us to collect images/attachments from the forum into the gallery.

Yes, finally! Here's hoping that 4.2 will deliver further improvements to the activity stream. ^_^

As a workaround, I rename my images in advance as 01, 02 ... 09, 10, 11 ...

This helps preserve the sort order.

Is it just me and my site or does the current gallery upload name the image with a horrendous looking file name instead of the "name" I give it on my desktop? If it is not just me, is there a fix, or is this addressed in 4.2?

Oh, and the improvements look amazeballs too btw. ^^

It's everyone.  It's horrendous.

But this News has a feature to help overwrite the title.

I would still leave it blank and not populate anything in the caption/title. Make the user input a name and then duplicate that name with the %n. If the file name stays in as default, most will not change it. They don't care about you're SEO so you need to stimulate the addition of a caption/title.

Yes, thank you! Great to see some of Gallery's issues being addressed. There has been so much feedback for Gallery over the years like better image navigation to take it to the next level, and to address some glaring omissions.

Please can you advise if the image sorting issues have been resolved? I.e. that prevent you from uploading a series of photos in a chronological sequence from start to finish in the correct logical order (for me, it's annual carnival parades, for many, it's other races or events). After uploading they currently display backwards when viewed, so visitors are stuck with seeing the end of the parade/event first instead of the start of the parade first, and vice versa.

The ability, also long requested, to finally embed YouTube, Vimeo and other 3rd party hosted videos in the Gallery 'off the shelf' and hence have Gallery become more of a complete Media Gallery without having to buy third party apps, would be great.
