4.0 - Calendar Stream

IP.Calendar has a few primary important views: the monthly grid view (i.e. a typical calendar table), the weekly view which lists a calendar week and any events occurring during that week, a daily view which lists all events occurring on a given day, and the actual event views where you view details about a specific event. All of these views have their usefulness, however we felt that there was a missing piece to the puzzle. During planning meetings we discussed adding a popular feature request known as an agenda view, which basically lists all events between a given time period (or from a given date forward) and while we liked the idea, we felt we could accomplish the end goal while taking the interface a step further.

The calendar stream

The new "stream" view is what it sounds like - a stream of calendar events listed in order of date, from oldest to newest. This calendar view is based upon a given month and will show all events occurring within that month (including recurring events). You can view the calendar stream for each month individually if you wish, just like you would view the calendar "month" view.

The events are displayed as small blocks of event data.

This is a general idea of what the stream looks like

As you can see, events are listed from oldest to newest in a "stream", i.e. a grid of blocks showing event details. The stream is an option for end users to choose from, and the admin can set it as the default viewing method for Calendar if they wish.

Conclusion

We believe this new stream will accomplish the same end goal an agenda view is designed to accomplish, but in a more robust and stylish manner. We look forward to your feedback on this new enhancement to the calendar product.

As this is an additional new feature , it is not wise to compare it with default Calendar grid view.

Even though there shall be logic on the displayed events. I agree on this point with many others.

Also as this is a stream view , maybe it is wise to implement filters that allow users to customise the stream according to their needs.

All though i am more focused on the Map integration. I assume this is available all around suite right ?

Fantastic! I love having choices! And I actually like this view.

As others commented, I'm also very interested in the maps. Utilizing maps for location is highly important to a calendar IMHO. It's one of the biggest features I've been waiting for in IP.Calendar!

It would be nice to use maps in other apps as well. Might find a use for IP.Content with maps.

Can't really see the point of calender anymore, nobody uses it. If we organise meets we put them on the forum

If Calendar would create events in a designated forum with the RSVP status right in the thread and synced (along with comments/posts), I'd love to use Calendar. We're a gaming community that deals with regular tournaments. Calendar has a lot of potential for us.

Just a few notes...

We will blog more about maps in Calendar in an upcoming blog entry. ;)

This view is built per-month, so you can view any month (even in the past) and see the "stream" of events for that month.

This is an early screenshot and there are still bugs to work through.  Obviously an end date should not be before the start date (that's actually because it's a recurring event and the software figured out the correct next occurrence for the start date...but did not adjust the end date correctly, but that's unimportant at this point in time).  My point is, I would recommend overlooking minor bugs in early pre-alpha screenshots.

A lot of calendar events can benefit from reviews: poetry readings, concerts, gaming "raids", I could go on.

This is not the only change in calendar.  Someone mentioned RSVP functionality being important to them...all I can say is stay tuned for further blog entries regarding the next version of Calendar.

Minor bugs in an alpha/beta is fine and expected, but uh, what sort of sorting should it be doing if not chronologically? Or is it just a free-for-all for that given month?

An ability to export birthdays and other entries to a file would be helpful for me. I have a monthly newsletter and add the events in the calendar into my newsletter. Currently I have to select the entire month, copy and paste to a text file. Then I edit out the stuff in the text file that I don't want and then enter it into the newsletter. A lot of steps.

I think it's being to clever for it's own good.  Less is more sometimes, a list of upcoming events in an easy to read layout is what I'm after.  Take a look at a real calendar (look at the functionality not the design).

http://demo.helioscalendar.com/

This is precisely how an event list should be stacked - the eye candy of it leaves a lot to be desired, but the flow is the most important aspect; although people can, for the most part, be quite illogical, there are aspects that have been pre-programmed into our thought processes and one of them is that a list normally reads from top to bottom.  Perhaps to placate everyone add in an option as to how the list is presented; columned (choice of) or stacked.

Or you can enter in the database with phpmyadmin for example, and export it in an excel format.

+1 to the fact the idea is good but the current layout is very confusing/messy. The screenshot posted in these comments, which shows the 'order', says it all really.

I trust you also have meetings based on the feedback you get in the comments of the blog. It'd be nice to think we're involved, cheers.

I read this in the original blog entry, but assumed I had misinterpreted because the example screenshot had events from both February and March.  Or perhaps it displays the events in the forthcoming month-long period, i.e. until the same day of the month next month.  Either way, I hope that is an option and not required.  I typically have 20 events per year, but some months may have only 1 or 0.  For me the whole point of a "list view" is that my users don't have to scroll through page after page to see what events are coming up in the future.  Plus I've got a few events that are years away.  Nobody's going to scroll through dozens of pages just to see if there happens to be an event in the future.

As I said, I really enjoy the idea, and I suppose I could even get to like the layout as presented if I could understand the order it puts events in.  But I really hope events aren't limited to just a month-long period.  Please say it ain't so!

We will see if the pinterest view also works for calendar events. This view would look better if every event would show an event image.

Will this sort of view also be used for other apps for consistency reasons or is it a unique view?

I would like to second that. Until now, the calendar is detached from the rest of the suite and cannot create a forum post or show up as frontpage article. Therefore the visibility is very low. I hope this will be improved in 4.0.

But what if a calendar hast just one or two events per month?

I did expect that view would combine all upcoming events like the list view hook I am using now.

Integration is very important. There is a need to LINK stuff, live topics with events etc... maybe even in a linked topic-event, the event it pinned on the top of the topic or even better shown on the top the screen even when you scroll down, knowing how many are participating and which friends of yours etc...

A problem in my community is that except the forum (topics/posts) the rest info is lost (events, blogs, downloads). People don't easily explicitly go to look for them, so I guess you need to pop it in their face notifying them...
